There's no way Lisey's Story is King's favorite of his novels. I know he said that, but I refuse to believe that statement was anything but a marketing gimmick

I read all of the Bachman books and I remember Rage the most because I detested it so much. The protagonist was so hard to sympathize and the actions of the people around him so unbelievable it just pissed me off that I'd wasted my time. The Talisman, on the other hand, is one of my favorites. I thought he walked most of the way because Speedy told him he had to.

Yeah, Rage is absolutely atrocious. Such an awful book. The Talisman is just one that didn’t even slightly gel with me. I think Speedy might have told him he had to but I can’t remember if it was ever confirmed whether or not it was necessary to walk the entire way or not.

Probably my least fav King book is Lisey...It took me 10+ years to get through it...I would dnf, then make myself try again...because I kept hearing that it was King's favorite book, so i thought it must have some redeeming value...but no, it was just bad. And the baby-talk gimmick was ultra annoying. Another at/near the bottom is "Colorado Kid"...but it was such a "nothing" for me, that it doesn't inspire the same response for me as "Lisey"

yeah my main problem with Rage is that it's really hard for me to suspend my disbelief for it, it feels very dated. There's a scene close to the end that would never happen haha

Spoilers for Rage below. The padlock stopping the bullet scene was stupid as shit, but the part when he’s in the mental hospital at the end and he learns that his classmates kind of idolise him is so dumb. It’s so dumb!!! What kind of sense does it make? I know he couldn’t predict the future but the way it would play out in real life today is just so different from the book and I have such a tough time believing it.
@TheEmeraldSword86
@TheEmeraldSword86 3 ай бұрын
@GetFramed believe it or not, the padlock scene is realistic. Theodore Roosevelt survived an assassination attempt because his 50-page inaugural address was in his shirt pocket. I once saw a picture of shot-through coins that a Civil War soldier had in his shirt pocket. I know it seems stupid, but those were actual events that actually happened. I'm fully aware that a padlock isn't as thick as a 50-page paper or a bunch of coins, but it is survivable.

Roadwork - I had seen about a dozen different covers for this book from all over the world, and they gave me the impression that this guy was going to go on a destructive rampage where he destroys stuff and kills people, in order to stop the construction. But the book did not meet my expectations, so I felt disappointed that the covers misled me. I hate that covers can be so misleading. So a year passed, and I re-read it, but this time, I knew what to expect, so I just enjoyed it for what it is, rather than hate it for what it isn't. And now it's one of my favorite King books.

I must be weird as overall I've fairly enjoyed the Talisman though it is starting to drag a bit as I approach the climax and I'm definitely in 'Let's just get this over with' mode. Only read 28 SK books so far but of those my bottom 5 would be (no particular order) The Colorado Kid The Gunslinger Cycle of the Werewolf (not the artwork though, obvs) The Long Walk Rose Madder

I haven't read the other four you talked about, but I have to disagree on Rage. Rage is a book I was not expecting to love as much as I did. I thought it was just gonna be an angry Stephen King venting his frustrations to the world. It was so much more than that. I recently graduated high school not too long ago, so I get what they're talking about. I had a lot of stuff on my mind at the time, so I know what those kids are going through. I've been wondering who my favorite Stephen King villian was, or at least the scariest. Charlie Decker scares me because he's real. There are so many Charlie Deckers out there, and that scares me. I sympathize with Charlie to a point. I feel bad for him with the way he grew up, but that's where my sympathies end. He's scary. I had a similar incident that, fortunately, wasn't actually real, but I was still scared. Overall, Rage was a book that I didn't think I would particularly care for, but I love it. Charlie Decker scares me the most. This book is the only book that ever scared me. I get the controversy, and I understand it, but I love this book, and that scares me most of all.

The Top 5 Worst for me... 1. The Talisman 2. Pet Sematary (in my opinion) 3. The Lawnmower Man 4. Graveyard Shift 5. Children of the Corn The reason I put Pet Sematary, Lawnmower Man, Graveyard Shift, and Children of the Corn on here is because I didn't care for them. I didn't like Pet Sematary because the whole story felt like a damn drama instead of a horror novel, and I happen to be a cat lover, so the way this novel painted it out to be REALLY pissed me off. I didn't like The Lawnmower Man because...well, it's just a fat guy buck naked eating grass like a goat. Wtf?! 😂 That's it? That's it?! We had *all* this build up, and we had every ounce of suspense, all to witness the pure, ungodly horror...of a naked obese man, chowing down on God's cesar salad? It's more funny than scary! 😅 When I read this, I was laughing the entire time! Not because of what the narrator went through (because nothing happens), but because we are meant to believe that this is scary! I didn't like Graveyard Shift because it wasn't like the movie where it has a giant bat. Instead, we just have a bunch of rats. That's it. A swarm of rats. No giant bats in the original book. Just a blatant ripoff of James Herbert, who did a much better job with that concept than Stephen King ever did. Now, I didn't like Children of the Corn not because of the concept, but because of the lead characters. Oh my god, they were assholes! They just won't shut up! All they ever do is fight, yell, scream, and I wanted to jump into the book and punch them in their fucking faces, then look them dead in the eyes and say, "You know why! Now have a nice day." Don't get me wrong, my all-time favorite stories by Stephen King were The Green Mile and Misery, but all of his books weren't that interesting for me. I didn't get into Stephen King because they were repetitive. "It's about an author in Maine with a drinking problem," and it just goes on forever and forever without stopping. I get it that he's proud of his home state, and he conquered his alcoholism, and I'm happy for him, but dammit, we get it, Stephen! You don't have to hammer in the idea that you're self-inserting into a story that's a cross between a ghost story and a dumbass soap opera! It's just ass-backwards! This is some next level Tyler Perry shit, but with literature instead of motion pictures. But that's just my personal thoughts on Stephen King, and if you disagree it's fine with me.

I enjoyed Lisey's Story okay once I got into it. I DNF From a Buick 8 and Roadwork. Cell was fucking terrible. I haven't read the Talisman or the sequel, or any of the Dark Tower books. I also hated Desperation and the Regulators, wtf? I pretty much stopped reading King in the 90s because all roads led to the Dark Tower and none of it was interesting. I liked Bag of Bones from that period, not much else. And this is bad, but his early stuff, from when he was still drinking, was better. Quitting saved his life but his writing wasn't as good.

@@GetFramed I am about 60 pages into Black House, but then got side-tracked. So it's cool we're practically on the same timing there. The Talisman is great in my opinion, but I am like 41. Maybe age makes a difference? And in a way, I felt like this all could have been an adventure game. It's about the journey rather than the destination, which is an absurd thing to say when he's literally trying to save his mom. But, when you consider that she was the Queen of Brooklyn (was it?) and a movie actor, you kind of get the feeling that things are upside down. The sizzle is there but not the steak. So again I think it's a book that's great because its a satire on how Utterly messed up the world is. (A common theme I have found of SK's)

Because you're a citizen of this polluted, arrogant world, and can't perceive the world of daydreams the way Jake was shown how to, and your hatred of the book is simply evidence of its magnficence! lol, I am not at all serious, except like, in the most ridiculous sort of way.
