In which John counts down his top five favorite zombie apocalypses of all time, from video game zombies to novelistic zombies to vampire zombies to movie zombies to...well, you get the picture. I also talk a bit about the broader eschatological urges of humans.
Sorry I'm uploading late. I'm in Grand Haven, Michigan recording an audio version of The Fault in Our Stars. More info on that here: dft.ba/tfiosboxset

I think the best zombie apocalypse is Max Brooks' novel World War Z, because it's not actually the zombies that are scary. They get a lot of good time, and there are some pretty awesome kills, but most of the horror is more about the human characters. Who needs shooting zombies in the brain when there's a chapter where the main set piece is parents murdering their children so that they won't be turned into zombies?

+AValveFanboy Agreed. If we are talking the new breed of 'vampire/zombie', Justin Cronin's Passage trilogy is better written, but in both books its the same focus - per your description, the things humans will do to survive an apocalypse. I liked the fact that Brooks spent a lot of time detailing how mankind eventually adapted and fought back, aided by the zombies two Achilles heels : their insatiable hunger and their susceptibility to cold weather. I would trade any 10 screenplays featuring Brad Pitt and the entire CGI team at Disney just to see the scene where the soldiers lure the zombies into their killing ground at the end of Brooks' novel - I wouldnt care if it was just a bunch of amateurs as long as they were faithful to the book. Brooks is scathing of governments and their failure to react to any threat before its too late -- how many countries are ready for the next global pandemic, for example ? The author knew that a book about disease taking us to the brink of extinction wouldnt sell anywhere near as well as a book about a zombie apocalypse - 9/10 for mine.

for me, the best zombie book is World War Z by Max Brooks. it has gruesome details about how society would change. Humans view both themselves and each other differently and even how wars are fought and governments govern

John, I've got bad news for you about the kind of Zombies that appear in The Walking Dead... Also, while I Am Legend heavily influenced the zombie literature, I'm going to agree that they're not zombies. They freaking talk.

Has been a while since I read I am legend. But the way I remembered it they were described as kinda more vampiric than zombie-like. Especially since they were only active at night and couldn't wander around under bright daylight (spoiler, for the exception of the "daywalkers" which appear later)

295Phoenix Well, I guess there goes John's reasoning for why the comics are better than the show. Even though I DO agree that the comic is better :)
@InsertCleverNameHere0

***** Well, the idea is that the disease that creates the zombie has already spread to the survivors. But the way it works means that it doesn't activate until a person dies. Once they die, no matter how they die, they become a zombie if their brain is still intact, despite what John believed about the comic.

Your Top 5 picks are great, but I really enjoyed the War Z novel multiple use of post apocalypse viewpoints trying to string together exactly how the world reacted & how each part of the world attempted to survive the crisis. My absolute favorite being the audio book rendition of the chapter with the Old blind Nihonjin at Mount Fuji.

It is characteristically cool that John Green rates "I Am Legend" so highly. The 1970's movie 'The Omega Man' with Charlton Heston as Neville remains the best film version and deserved a bigger budget. Interesting music score too by Grainer who also did the music to The Prisoner tv series.

Brian Ralph's graphic novel Daybreak is fantastic. Its kind of like a fps in that the reader is the silent maim character, but it never feels like a gimmick. The comic takes place in what seems like the latter stages of the apocalypse - almost everything is rubble, and the zombies, though rarely more than distant shapes, outnumber humans by like 50:1. The art is fantastic, and the characters, while all nameless, are great as well.

Feed by Mira Grant!!! I guess the concept isn't so original but the world-building and character development is fantastic! Also it combines your two types of zombies into one, i.e., most people become zombies when they die, and it is caused by a virus. Also, Feed is even better because it allows for animal zombies and animal transmission of the virus, which is awesome and frightening. If you haven't read this book, I recommend it! :)

John - if you want to watch something about Zombie Apocalypses that asks all the really big questions - watch In The Flesh. In fact, ALL of you should watch it. Like many other things the BBC produces, it's only a short series, so will only take up 3 hours of your time, but seriously - the best zombie-themed thing I have EVER watched (mostly because it was actually about family & redemption and suicide and love and prejudice and hate and racism and acceptance and not actually much about zombies)

So many endings to choose from.. But for starters: Economic collapse, Peak oil, Food crisis, Environmental tipping point. Those are the ones which are either likely or already happening. Also a bunch of "weird" ones (Beemageddon is a good example, which might be crossing the threshold into the previous category soon) which are individually unlikely but there are so many that it's a question of the law of averages. Ultimately, the end is that some people will be ready and some people won't.
