I recommend checking out Pat Buchanan's book The Death of the West if you want to spend a little more time understanding the change that has occurred in America and America's cultural divide. He talks about the new post-1960s sub-culture that has turned into the dominate culture in TV and movies, and the real American traditional culture. An audiobook is on KZfaq

It is reference to the justice system. We are ruled by the law. Not by government mandate. So even if the president says you cannot speak about something. The rule of law in the bill of rights contradicts him and therefore his mandate is unlawful. Traffic laws are not guidlines or sugesstions. They are enforced and expected to be followed.

LOL I got that too, probably because our parents were just tired of answering our million questions. But, I do actually agree that American children are encouraged to ask "why". I think some of the points on this list were probably written with other cultures in mind, as a sort of contrast. In some other cultures, it's sort of a one way street, but in America, I would say explanations, teaching, discussion, independent thought, inquiry is encouraged a lot more than in other places. I think it's getting at that. That was sort of my take anyway.

@@kijete Hateful, rude, or offensive speech is protected by the 1st Amendment of the United States Constitution, as is *most* speech. In other words: Hate speech = protected speech Because it is an opinion and opinions are highly protected in the US. In fact, even if your opinion harms someone's reputation or business, they have no grounds to sue. Even if they become homeless and starve to death because no one wants to be near them. Why? Because what you expressed was an *OPINION* not a false statement of fact, which in that case would be called slander or libel depending. Americans value freedom of speech greatly. And if a case about an opinion harming a reputation went to court, and the person who voiced their opinion was ordered to pay, news outlets would be on it in an instant and it would probably go to the Supreme Court where the outcome would be overruled in half a second flat. This is also what would happen if someone were sued or arrested for making an offensive comment about a person's race, sex, gender, looks, ethnicity, origin, accent, personality, sexual orientation, religion, and on and on and on. And lawyers would be crawling to represent them in court because you can bet they'd be entitled to quite the pretty penny in damage money. Americans take this very seriously and very, very few things are not protected under the 1st Amendment.

Wow, this is a really accurate list! I’d say number 26, really depends on the type of party. And number 13 isn’t quite right. You can’t be charged with a hate crime for shouting hateful garbage. You can only get charged if you act on that hate speech. But other than that y’all nailed it 🤙🏾 The dynamic between American parents and children would be a great video Independence is encouraged, higher education is vital, grandparents rarely live in the home or even close by, drive by 15, move out by 18-20 (even women), moving far from your parents for a job is looked upon positively, certain parts of the country are more religious than others.

I feel like the difference between us Americans and other countries is that we are more independent, very straight forward, bold, enthusiastic and like diversity. Most cultures are only used to THIER own culture/habits so they get weirded out by us when we do something different. And America is full of so much personality, different ethnicities and individuality that we don't waste our time or get second thoughts when others do their own thing on the streets. Tbh Americans can be friendly af but we still like our space.

America didn't get its independent spirit from the post-1965 immigration change or the last couple decades of increased ethnic diversity. So I disagree with you that mass immigration or ethnic/foreign culture diversity is what gives Americans their independent/freedom spirit. Also, a lot of (especially Western) countries have a lot of newcomers from the East/ethnic diversity these days, so that is not an American thing. And to say Americans like diversity (assuming you mean foreigners coming to America practicing their foreign cultures) is such a general statement. In fact, a lot of Americans like American culture and American towns and communities. And I don't think a majority of Americans have wanted an increase in immigration levels perhaps since the question was asked, not for decades at least, and probably not ever.

I'm an American living in Northern Virginia which around 30-50 minutes from DC depending on the traffic. It varies from state to state especially if you go to more rural areas or the bigger metropolitan cities. The west coast is extremely different from the east coast and same with the midwestern states. I'm assuming this video is just general guidelines. From my experience living in Northern VA my entire these are my thoughts and criticism. #13 is partially true. In majority of the country, minus some of the more rural areas it is rude and not socially acceptable to make of fun someone's religion or ethnicity, but on a federal level it is not a hate crime until someone threatens violence or uses violence (arson, murder, or vandalism) for someone to receive a fine or a jail sentence. Generally speaking, majority of Americans are extremely tolerant to different religions and if you stay around the cities and even some more rural areas you will be fine. #14 is mostly true. Alcohol laws vary state by state, but America compared to other western countries is very strict with the sale of alcohol. In my state of Virginia, it is actually legal for a minor to drink alcohol only if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian who is over 21 years of age. However, someone who is under 21 can not purchase alcohol anywhere in the country. #15 this was changed July of 2019. You have to 21 anywhere in the country now to purchase tobacco and nicotine products. As for smoking in certain places this isn't really true. You can't smoke in restaurants or indoors, but when you're outside as long as you stay a distance from non-smokers it's honestly not a big deal when it comes to public smoking. #25 This really depends on the person, I guess. I actually never heard of this. #26 This feels wrong to me. There usually some form of music going on in the background. Again, depends on the party or the people hosting it. #31 I don't how everyone else does it, but the thank you cards are not common anymore since communication on the internet is mainstream now. It was more preeminent before everyone was on the internet. Usually, you can just send the gift with a little message or not include one at all. #32 Some people do, but Americans typically bottle up emotions more lol. #33 The closest color i would think would symbolize death is black. It is acceptable to wear all black at a funeral, but this isn't a rule. I didn't have formal clothes at the time so I kinda wore a funny shirt, but that cheered up people. #36 You typically dont ask a women her age or her weight. For the most part, asking someone how much they make isn't socially acceptable unless you are really close to them. I don't see how asking someone about their religion isn't socially acceptable, being curious about someone's religion can be a sign of interest in someone's beliefs which is typically seen as positive. Maybe not to a stranger, it depends. #48 I think with hook up culture this has changed a lot, but always be on the cautionary side when doing so.

I don’t know how this only had 3 likes. I’m from Maryland. Baltimore City specifically and yeah, what you said is pretty close to what it’s like up here. Most people don’t know that you can still drink under 21 but under certain circumstances. What I read was to just always assume that if you are under 21, the clerk cannot sell alcohol to you specifically. I never realized how reserved Americans are emotionally, especially at funerals. I felt like the people that were screaming over the casket were a bit nuts (que my sister screaming that it wasn’t my dad in the casket).

I think they may be confusing “party” with “gathering”. Idk. Most parties do include some sort of music. But I guess some gatherings maybe be considered “parties” in other cultures. Gatherings with a group of friends and maybe their friends or someone they invited where you sit and have conversation might be considered to be parties in other cultures. I wouldn’t know.

Duco Darling no English is not the official language at the federal level, you need to do some research. Ive been out of California, most major cities in the US still have a high amount of spanish speakers. 55 million people in the US speak Spanish. Sure it’s not common in rural white states, but tourists or immigrants wouldn’t be going there anyway. You’re acting like most American tourists don’t go to LA or New York. No. America isnt different from other countries because of free speach. Theres SOOO many countries that has freedom of speach. Mine included. But we dont make such a big deal out of it because it isnt. If its one of the only things americans can brag about, its time to look at how poorly the country is at a larger scale and how much could be improved, but it doesnt because Americans are shit scared of positive change. And it shouldnt be an eccuse for hate speach either. Also. It has nothing to do with culture. Barely anything on this list has anything to do with culture. The only ppl in america that has an american only culture is natives. Obesity and dirty streets isnt culture. Food. Unique clothes for unique seremonies. Folklore. Unique celebrations. Overall how you treat each other. Architecture. That is culture. Feeling love for your country is a good thing. But with america its usually taken to the extreme. Which is negative and blind the citizens from their country improving. EVERY country has things it can do to improve. Even first world countries.

@carlald910
@carlald910 3 жыл бұрын
It means the people having the party will make a list of items they want as presents and the guests will buy them the gifts or give them money to buy the items themselves. It's etiquette for certain parties like a baby shower, bridal shower, maybe a wedding but not common for a birthday party. For a birthday party, money is the usual gift unless you know the person intimately then a personal gift is better than money. If it is a birthday party for younger people, gifts aren't necessary unless it's family. The whole gift giving thing in America is exhausting and big parties are expensive for the guests. It is a big deal and it is in poor taste to show up empty handed.

13 is not true. You can make an insulting statement about someone's religion or ethnicity. It is called freedom of speech. It is a basic right of All Americans to speak freely. Threatening someone with violence or inciting violence can sometimes be against the law though. Otherwise you can speak freely on the street as you please.

It sounds like both a good thing and a bad thing that Americans want to keep strong feelings in. I think it's important to show that it is okay to cry and to be upset. However I don't think it's very practical because it can take time for someone to calm down. Besides it's something that also effects people in the surrounding in a way that they might not have asked for.

Can anyone direct me to where I might find an answer to this etiquette question? In an old American movie from the 1930s (The Thin Man), I saw something in the first five minutes that I found quite strange. A young woman was introducing her fiance to her father, and at the end of the conversation the fiance slipped a few coins into the father's hand, who casually put them in in pocket. At first I thought it must have something to do with the plot, but it never came up again so I assume it was just some custom that was observed back then. Can anyone tell me what this was about, or direct me to a website that could tell me? Thanks.

he could have possibly owed the father- made a bet- or something of the like . That isn't something people really do irl XD. It would be best to search because every one is different, an example would be wearing shoes in someones house. Its okay if the house is dirty / its all wooden floors and your not really walking around in their house (standing in doorway or only going to the kitchen) but when its clean / carpet you would take off your shoes or if unsure, ask if its okay to take off your shoes and leave them by the door.

Life has been so miserable after my husband broke up with me 3years ago. I never thought he could hurt me just like that then i realized how much i loved my husband when he ended our relationship and i had to look for options to make sure i get her back to myself for i wasn't living fine anymore. I was directed to a Spell Doctor known as Dr donsmith ijebu by my cousin who he claimed he helped him in winning a lottery. I made contact with the Doctor and i was surprised and amazed when my husband came back to me with her knees on the floor pleading to me for forgiveness to take him back as my lover. I thought i was dreaming because all this happened just within 48 hours and it happened as the spell Doctor as said. For that wonderful encounter with this man, i took a decision on my path that i will let the world know about baba ojogun for he's able and capable to solve any problems.
