Our parades in the USA are small and boring compared to carnivals in Brazil. The floats are so colorful and huge. The singing and dancing are phenomenal. The mixing of the cultures is beautiful. Now I have to see the real thing one day.

If you're interested in carnival you can try looking up how a full parade is like - try searching up on youtube the name of the samba schools plus a year and "desfile completo" at the end, like "salgueiro 2020 desfile completo". The most famous samba schools are Imperatriz Leopoldinense, Mangueira, Portela, Salgueiro, Mocidade Independente, Beija-Flor, Viradouro, Grande Rio and Vila Isabel.

There are some racial tensions in Brasil (from slavery), but they are much less severe than in the US, as there was no segregation policies. Also, some aspects of african religions and culture surived here.

I was there in 1991 for three months and enjoyed myself immensely. Rio's carnival is hard for someone to dislike. By not being there at least I can watch it on KZfaq. This is better than watching the crap Hollywood, Stan or Netflix have to offer.

I believe the Olympic openings have restrictions. Moreover, such large floats would hardly enter a stadium. But speaking of Brazil's Olympic opening, it was beautiful, didn't you think? Little money was spent, and they delivered a very beautiful social message.

I am going to be a bit harsh (and I apologize for that), but, unconsciously, this kind of remark is based on an estereotyped perspective of brazilian culture. I feel so sick when I read things like that. Brazil is much more than Rio Carnival Parade, a special kind of Carnival allow me to say that. So, obviously an Olympic Ceremony in Brazil would be different from Rio Carnival Parade. If you expect a Rio Parade in Olympics, i am afraid to say that the problem here is not the olympic ceremony. Even if we aimed to make a parade, stadiums are not a "Sambódromo", a place specially built for a Carnival Parade with giant floats. Moreover, I feel that foreigners are so obsessed with the technical aspect of Carnival Parades that they forget (or even do not know at all) what brazilian carnival is really about. The aesthetics in Rio Parade are means and not the goal itself. The meaningful thing is the music, particularly samba, the lyrics that are so passionately sung, the people that plays Carnival. Not material objects like a float. And precisely these immaterial aspects of brazilian culture were deeply explored by the olympics ceremony. Curiously, the best feedbacks I read about that event were made by our latinamerican brothers. This speaks volumes to me. It seems that a huuuuuge cultural shock exists here, that made many foreigners unable to appreciate Rio opening ceremony. And that's a pity. Not for us, if I may say that. Although many brazilians didn't agree with Brazil hosting Olympics (I do think Brazil should focus efforts on solving our social problems before organizing that), despite this controversy, the majority of brazilians consider the Rio opening ceremony a success. It beautifully portrayed brazilian culture and people. The same culture and people that can make these giant, beautiful floats, but not only. There are intelligent, elegant references to brazilian history and culture throughout the Olympics opening event, but it is possible that most of foreign media didn't make the homework of educating themselves before broadcasting it (since they were so busy announcing a failure that did not happen) or maybe most of foreign public was willing to see a estereotyped, soft and shallow version of a party and not a sound narrative of a people that have endured so much things to be who they are today. And, you know, I really, really, don't care if people abroad don't see Rio Opening ceremony as successful. I am very proud of what I watched at that time. They warmed my heart. I will only reply to every comment that implies that opening ceremony should be a Parade, because this is awful, kind of offensive. Finally, just correcting a misinformation above, the organization of Rio Opening Ceremony was made by important brazilian artists, including the director Fernando Meirelles and the coreographer Deborah Colker.

I regret that I do not recall Brazil's Ceremony at the Olympics right off but isn't your country's fault. Here in the US when the Olympics are aired the network's have a big bidding war over who gets to show it on their network. The last 30 years it has been NBC but the problem with it is once they win and I don't fully understand this myself they start in the sponsors. Let me give you a example of how they ruined one Olympics I had been looking so forward to seeing. I forget the but China had it and I'm into Asian embroidery so I crushed when NBC broke every 2 to 3 minutes for commercials! Most of the time when the Chinese people were being shown the athletes in ceremonial dress came out, they sent the cameras to go talk to American athletics. I felt it was a slap in the face of the host country. They finally paid attention to things around 4 days later.

I have already read that NBC do not like opening ceremony so much because the event spend too many time with foreign teams/delegations and US team is one of the last teams that enters the stadium. And then NBC airs ads and stuffs. But i did not know that even the host team receive that treatment.
