The region became an alternative for backpacking for many, including us, after the borders to Southeast Asia were closed for a long time. But even now that travel to Asia is possible again, you should not lose sight of Central and South America!
The whole area is beautiful and varied, the people are super hospitable, it is very cheap in many places and also much safer than you might think.
And two more things that we like better than in Asia: Many countries, especially Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua in Central America or Bolivia in South America are real off-the-beaten-path destinations! Those who like to travel away from the crowds will experience an authentic backpacking adventure here! And all these countries can be traveled with just one language! If you speak a little Spanish (or want to learn it there) you can communicate with locals everywhere!
