With #2 if you live here in the Midwest in Tornado Alley, that air raid siren still makes you sweat a bit. That's what we use for tornado sirens today. They repurposed old Cold War air raid sirens for an early warning system for tornados. If you hear it, find cover because it means a tornado or at least a funnel cloud has been spotted in your area.

My best friends Grandfather was a tank commander in WW2, and he used to tell me and my friend stories about the war growing up and hanging at his house. He told us once how he had to bail out of a flaming tank and crawl through the grass to get away. Silence will always be the scariest. Because as a soldier in any military operation, you are used to shouting, sometimes fighting or gunfire and chaos, and the least thing you want is silence because it means that something big is about to occur. Specially in urban or jungle areas where hostiles could be anywhere.

Regarding the first one, my dad told me stories about when he was in his teens in Hungary during WWII. He would sometimes lay on a hillside and just for fun watch the fleets of Allied bombers flying overhead and counting how many there were ie; "ok so that square is 10x10 bombers and there's, let's see... about 20 squares so that's roughly 2000 bombers over there." He wasn't so calm however when he saw the Soviet tanks rolling down the street over a decade later in '56. That's why I'm here in Canada today. 🍁

Ah, air raid sirens. My grandpa was born smack dab in the middle of world war 2, and he says that one of the things he remembers are the eerie sounds of air raid sirens. He lived through the war and is still alive, peacefully growing fruits and veggies in his hyogo prefecture home.

They were really family men who weren’t interested in politics. My dad‘s granddad only spoke about some tidbits of war when he was drunk. My grandma found out that he helped a jewish man who owned a crystal shop escape to switzerland, when things got bad for the Jews in Germany. He gave my great-grandfather a vase, we still have that vase. He was a police officer before the war and apparently used his insights to help him. My mom’s grandfather was a imprisoned in France after the war and came back in 1950. he only talked about the war with other ww2 veterans, there’s this one story he used to tell, where he had to pee in the woods and was surprised by a French soldier. The old sirens are still used in some places. They test them where I live every Monday at 11:30am. It's funny seeing the faces of people who aren't from here, hearing it for the first time.

It’s crazy that I had a dream about this the other night and I’m just watching the sounds I heard in my dream of war, it’s very sad that people actually had to go through this and still do. You ither had/ have to hide for your life or die running. It’s unflattering and I hope it all rests soon

my grandpa was in the vietnam war. i used to ask him questions about bc i was (and still am) curious about what it was like. he would never answer any questions about war. not to my grandma. or my mom and aunt. no one. i know now that he was so traumatized he could never even think about it. i feel awful for asking him questions as a kid and wish i could say i’m sorry to him.

My grandpa fought in Vietnam as well, he won’t talk about anything either, and my grandma told me about how he almost jumped out a window bc he was having a nightmare about being in a plane during the war. Shits crazy.

Same with my great grandpa, it wasn’t until after his passing that we really understood. We found a box with a pistol, 1 bullet, Dozens of uniform patches from German and Japanese soldiers along with a couple German trench lights(what they wore on their uniform) He killed many men on the front line as a Green Beret Marine. I knew him as the happy old man I would watch Looney Toons with. He spent the rest of his life, after retiring from the military and trucking, giving back to the world through his local churches and VAs. I miss him.

I've never fought a war, Been born around one. Never. But what I know, is that war is absolute, traumatizing, horrific stuff and should never happen again, but unfortunately, if there ain't war, more than millions, billions perhaps / people lose jobs. Army, navy, marine corp, airforce etc.
