As a Waves Fanboy, the C4 and C6 are my default go to compressors, especial for side chaining. All the other Wave plugins you use, I do too, with the exception of LinMB. Other than taking a Cubase picture in my plugin library; I haven't used or worked with the Linear MB Compressor. I will give it a spin around the DAW for a possible home in my mix chains.

Great video! Keep up the good work. Just got H-Comp and am wondering this. If my release is set to 1 4th of a note, this means it will need X time to return to 0 compression right? Right. So if im having 3dB of gain reduction it will take X time for -3dB to return to 0dB of gain reduction, and that is done in a particular Y speed. But if, at the same X time, im having 10dB of gain reduction it would need a release of much faster Z speed to go from -10 to 0 dBs. So if Z speed is greater than Y speed it means that the release is program depandant, right? Am I getting it right or am I missing something?
@user-sd7eb6jq9y
@user-sd7eb6jq9y Жыл бұрын
Did my experiment and for your info, for the release to be accurate to the rhythmic value it needs around 20dB of gain reduction. In other words, you DO have BPM value as the release but only if you compress in the -18 to -20 range. If you compress around 4-5 dB the gain reduction will be at 0dB in way faster than the given BPM value. Gonna report this in the forum and see what I get.
@RaytownProductions

Great observation! This is true, it will be program dependent. The release envelope shapes are quite complicated which will have an effect like you mentioned. In my experience, it tends to get really close and feel "right" on most sources. But at the end of the day, you need to trust your ears! Sometimes a song can sound better with a little longer or shorter release than what is calculated by this plug-in. Great, great comment! You have a very good understanding of this stuff 🙂 thanks for sharing!

Hey Bobby, I have a question. Are you familiar with the Goly Cross Compressor? It’s a piece of hardware that does a really cool thing. It compresses the low end but then also uses that low end info as a side chain to expand the high end. I was wondering if you knew of a plugin that does this or if you could think of a way to make this happen using existing plugins. I tried figuring it out last night but had a brain fart. Thought you may have some ideas. Thanks my friend!
@RaytownProductions
@RaytownProductions Жыл бұрын
Whoah! That sounds crazy. Thanks for the question. I have some ideas about how to do this. I do something similar with a gated parallel compressed drum bus that is triggered by my shells... Let me experiment and get back to you!
@psychoticchemist
@psychoticchemist 10 ай бұрын
You should be able to make that happen with a good dynamic EQ like fabfilter pro-q3 or the free tdr nova! Use the sidechain settings. I think you can have a per-band sidechain, which would be necessary to make this work, but I don’t recall for sure
@davidasher22
@davidasher22 10 ай бұрын
@@psychoticchemist you can’t do this with a regular dynamic eq. There’s a video on the Goly KZfaq channel where they explain the effect using a sine wave and some drum samples. It’s something completely different. There may be a way to route a similar type of compression effect but I’m not smart enough to figure it out. Lol
@psychoticchemist
@psychoticchemist 10 ай бұрын
@@davidasher22 if your description is correct, then a dynamic EQ that allows for a separate side chain signal for each band would definitely work as far as I can tell. You set your desired compression on the low end with normal “internal” sidechain (in other words, no sidechain), then you add a bell curve in the positive direction (for expansion instead of compression) on the high end with the sidechain on that curve set to just the low end of the original track
@davidasher22
@davidasher22 10 ай бұрын
@@psychoticchemist my description is simplified. That’s why I included the name of the processor and where to find the video explainer. There’s also a gearspace thread where you can find more info on the unit and it’s cross compression feature. Here’s a more detailed explanation from the thread though if you don’t want to look it up yourself. - It’s a 2-band EQ: band 1 selectable between 17Hz to 834Hz and band 2 443Hz to 24K; both with variable Q between 0.3 and full spectrum; switchable between bell and shelf modes - The shelf curve can vary between Baxandale style to steep s-curve (see diagram in the manual) - Both EQs have a compressor with amount of compression, attack and release (it’s not clear if these work just on the frequency range of the EQs or some other split. I assume the former. That mean that if there’s no EQ boost, there’s no compression - The Band 1 compressor has a side chain filter, variable in steps up to 234Hz. This affect Band 2. - There is a cross-compression function on each EQ which applies the opposite level of compression to the other EQ. As this can be applied in steps between 2:1 and 1:8 passing through 1:1 ratios. The ratio signifies how much you are inverting and seding to the opposing band. It never flat out compresses the level on the other. This operates independently of the compressors on each band. - plus a few other switchable options The main feature though is the cross compression. This is from the manual.. DYNAMIC SECTION: Standard compression, standard attack and a release, with 3 auto-modes. This is not a generic consumer unit, and I don't believe in restricting the ranges to "fool proof". We give you the option, because going a little off road is sometimes extremely pleasing. If you want play it safe, avoid the yellow and red settings! CROSS COMPRESSION: Inverts the amount of compression done on a band, and injects it to the opposing band at the set ratio. Since you're using the low end to counteract the high end, and vice versa, it can be described is "musical" in a meaningful way. It's also important to note, that use of the cross compression and compression does not exclude each other, so the processing allows for 4 dynamic interactions going on at once. Tip:lf you bypass a band, you can still activate the cross compression. In this scenario, you use the controls for ratio/attack/release exclusively for that. But the explainer video on the KZfaq channel is the best explanation.
