In the darkest age of Japan, endless war leaves a country divided. It is the middle of the 16th Century in Feudal Japan. The country, once ruled by a unified government, is now split into many warring clans. Ten legendary warlords strive for supremacy as conspiracies and conflicts wither the empire. Only one will rise above all to win the heart of a nation as the new shogun... The others will die by his sword.

Irony: Kiyomasa's Katana Cavalry is named after Kato Kiyomasa, who was actually part of the Seven Spears of Shizugatake (the seven bodyguards of Toyotomi Hideyoshi during the Battle of Shizugatake).

In term of melee, no way donderbuss would stand a chance against Yari Cav or Fire Cav.. Indeed They are Extremely devastating using their Guns, including to kill your own General 😅

The cav monks can actually spawn with the ikko ikki rebel armies. They're still expensive, but if you use agents as much as I do, they're not hard at all to recruit

Why dismount Katana Cavalry? Because they are a) quicker than their foot equivalent b) much tougher. They are one of the most armored units in the game which means you can leave them in blob of enemy archers while microing other things and they will live to tell the tale. You can also move them to reinforce whatever place needs it or flank with them. They are like the best unit to leave between enemy infantry and skirmishers without being afraid that they will get peppered down during longer engagments. They are more useful during defensive sieges when you really don't have time for cycle-charging with your Yari Cav. And they are more new player friendly cause they don't need cycle charging as much as Yari-Cavalry. But it mostly goes down for what you need that unit and your playstyle. Funny enough the reverse of what you said can be also argued - why use more difficult to replenish and expensive cav to kill other cav which can be done reliably with basic infantry units which does it way better than any other cavalry (Yari Ashigaru?) From what I remember in start of MP they were used as counter for Katana Samurais and Loansword Ashigaru Spam. They also kinda work as counter for Horse Archers because of their armor. And in the worst case scenario they can beat some spear units while dismounted 1vs1 while Yari has much tougher time because their charge plays much higher role. Naginata Cav is really lacking. If they had War Cry then at least you could use them as mobile debuffing unit. With their steep cost, lack of overwhelming power (because of bein jack of all trades), Warrior Monk Toilet-paper armor tradition and building requirements (just 1 lvl lower of temple would make them so much more affordable) they are just failing short. Nothing to add for rest of list as you nailed them. Great Job.

Exactly what was in my mind and btw takeda version of katana cav doesn't route till to the last 5. Won a near impossible battle with 3 katana cav(plus general),2 fire cav and a great guard versus 2 full stacks. I play expanded Japan mods ;) I rush Kyoto with takeda clan and totally play the game for fun, so I don't super expand.

Yari Ashigaru is great at *deterring* cavalry, not *killing* cavalry. To kill cavalry (especially generals) you have to chase it down, which non-mounted Yari can not do. This is why Yari Cavalry has such high movement speed - to catch other cavalry. Comparing Katana Cav. to Katana Sam. is not the same as comparing Yari Ashigaru to Yari Cavalry because they serve *completely* different purposes.

Fun fact: you can get alot of monk cav, just use your monk to incite Rebel, Ikko Rebel have a lot of chance to spawn monk cav

Not that high a chance, I did a Warrior Monk only campaign with the Ikko Ikki and used that as a method of recruiting as well and didn’t get that many of them throughout the campaign.

I disagree with your placement of monk cavalry. 1)Yes you need some high tier buildings but as Ikko Ikki you want those buildings regardless 2)Yes they are more expensive than Katana and Yari but they can beat both of them in combat.

Unfortunately it's difficult to test cavalry in a 1v1 situation against A.I. because it doesn't want to straight up countercharge you, but I'm pretty sure Yari Cavalry beats Naginata Cavalry, and even if it doesn't, it would be pretty darn close, while costing 1.5x the upkeep. For every two Naginata Cav you could afford three Yari/Katana Cav, and the Sam would definitely win those engagements, while being far easier to obtain. I disagree on wanting those buildings regardless, I finished several campaigns with the Ikko Ikki and I never got a chance to recruit Naginata Warrior Monk Cav because the campaigns finished long before I got there tech wise.

@@MrSmartDonkeyLP Yeah I understand that testing against AI is difficult but from my experience in PvP two naginata can easily beat 3 Yari and still have more than 1/3 of men left. Good argument about those buildings I never saw it as a problem as I like to play my campaigns slowly but if you play more quickly then I can see the problem and your point.

@@MrSmartDonkeyLP If you have light cav, you start a rebellion with your army in that province. It's possible to get them early on, which can be great for turn or two and dismounting cavalry is alright, because you can get them where you want them to be quicker

@@astoran3147 hes saying in his experience in legendary difficulty... in pvp your opponent doesn't get stat boosts... The best way to win legendary is to min max everything you can. to have the most success from the least effort so it makes sense

I feel like katana cav are meant to be a bit like mechanised infantry. Smaller unit, far more expensive, but they have a lot more mobility. Dismount them from their soft transports before contact, though.

I think I need to learn to maneuver - I tried to use light cavalry and found them regularly shot by the archers they were supposed to run down or caught by the infantry they were trying to flank - all in all very vulnerable and mostly useful for kiting some units away from the main battle.

You gotta hit and run with them. Send them directly into any unit, even bow ashigaru, they'll suffer some losses. Use them to hit from the sides or the back when your other units have already engaged the enemy. Oh, and also, try and use the time speed controls as much as possible. You have to micromanage if you want to use cavalry effectively.

I like Katana cavalry, but only if I have a cavalry-heavy composition. That way I can use Yari cavalry to clear the way, then smack into the infantry with both. If I'm going light on cavalry (three or fewer units), then I go with Yari only.

Katana cav is something like the Cuirassier in Napoleon Total war, they are both vulnerable to Lancer or Yari cav. But in NTW there are light cavalry like Hussar, Light Dragoon and Chasseur à Cheval which are great threats to Lancer but vulnerable to Cuirassier, while in Shogun 2, there are no "light sword cavalry" to stop the Yari cav.

What does wedge formation do exactly in this game ? When should you use wedge formation ? Do you use wedge formation at all in your playthrough ?

Personally I don't suggest using wedge formation. Unlike more recent total wars games, wedge formation in shogun 2 doesn't have stat buff. Sometimes( super rare) you will see a small gap between enemy infantry line , and you can push through the line to reach range units that are behind the infantry line using wedge formation. It is faster to press one button rather than try to adjust the width in the heat of battle. Since wedge formation is always pointy at the front, you can pretty much guarantee there will always be a few cavalry that reach the ranged units, thus silence them. This is the only application i could think of. Wedge formation is used to penetrate enemy lines to reach vulnerable target that are behind the lines. Don't use wedge formation for the sake of maximize the charges efficiency because it doesn't.

You get Warrior monk cav for free when you send your monk to spark a rebellion. You can even get them early game when the AI can only field light cav.

conclusion from all list on 1 sit early game all ashigaru and light cav.. stock army. then upgrade them.. choose best for fighting general. yari infantry.. yari cav.. rocket launcher.. *general had left the chat*

I like cavalry but since the ai only seems to spam elite Chevron Yari Ashigaru/Samurai in my campaigns I find it very difficult to use them effectively without having the babysit them. That said, since the ai seems to only care about giving your cavalry a hug with their yari units, if you've got 30 min to waste, they are the perfect unit for luring detachments of enemies from forested hills which the ai loves to camp and destroy them piecemeal.

When I first saw the unit portrait of the kiyomasa cavalry I got so excited. Then I was so disappointed when I realized in-game that they weren't wannabe vikings on horses.

Fire cav compared to yari cav (both from takeda) aren't that much better imo and cost 28% more to recruit. Stats wise it's +1 attack, +2 defence, +2 armor and -5 charge. So if you charge in and pull out to charge back in, then yari cav might actually outperform fire cav. For a charging in and letting them fight without pulling out the fire cav will do better.

I wouldn't rate hero units in a list like this. Spears of the shizukatake is probably the worst hero unit since great guard does everything it does but better, I guess you can get it before great guard and then disband these guys. Kiyomasa is a good unit and good for keeping katan cav topped up on stamina and morale. For me the list is : 1. Takeda Fire Cavalry. These guys are spammable, have an influence radius and have 9 melee attack! Get these guys in a + melee attack province and they become great guards. 2. Yari cavalry. Pretty much the best cavalry for amy non takeda army. 4 melee attack is not decicive enough so recruit them in a + melee attack province. 3. Katana Cavalry. Contrary to what people say katana cav is a great unit. Probably the best flanking unit. Flanking infantry like katana samurai or no dachi are too slow to get there in time. Recruit these guys in a + charge province and you'll break any unit upon impact when flanking. 4. Light cavalry. Cheapest cavalry unit apart from the general. Good for the early game, but their low numbers and shit melee attack require a lot of micromanagement to not lose the entire unit. Charge them in and draw them out as quickly as possible or risk losing too many men. If you can, spec + melee attack on these guys because they have a hard time killing anything beyond the initial charge. 5. Naginata warrior monk cavalry. An example of how versatility is not always good. They have poorer melee attack than katana cav. They are slower, have less charge bonus and less anti cav bonus than yari cav. The only redeeming factor this unit has is that the ikko ikki dont get any other cav other than this and light cav so they see some use. These guys also have shitty armor so they will die to arrows fast. These boys could use all province upgrades together to be decent. Personally I'd give them armor so that they dont die to a fire arrow volley while trying to disrupt an archer line. 7. Honourable mention : Great guard. Stupidly powerful unit. Spec them with + melee attack and these boys are just too powerful. Many people complain about getting only 2 of these but these guys are comparable to or even superior to hero units because of their higher number and you get 2 of them.

Generals (Hatamoto Bodyguard) 6. Spears of Shizugatake 7. Kiyosama Katana Cavalry 8. Katana Cavalry Edit (after the premiere): Yeh kinda forgot about the monk cav. To explain the dojo Yari, i was looking through the wiki to find the names of the two hero units (didn't look at the stats) and found these, not sure how you get the dojo type though.

@@MrSmartDonkeyLP Basically Matchlock ships beat everything else. European Trade Ship, Black Ship, Siege Tower Bune, Matchlock Kobaya. Morale penalty for ships with hull damage from firearms is insane.

@@MrSmartDonkeyLP My second playthrough was with a Christian Mori since I wanted to use ships more, with a third as the Otomo when the DLC hit. Nanban trade ships? Super broken vs the AI, one of these and a couple of bow ships wins you almost any manual fight. Matchlock ships? Shreds morale, ridiculous when paired up with a bigger ship that the AI wants dead first at all costs (like the Nanban trade ship). Siege tower ships? Used to be completely broken in multiplayer back in 2012, as in fill your army with only these and you will 100% win as long as your opponent doesn't do the same. Heavily nerfed since then, no idea now. I've no big opinion on any of the other ships. One Nanban trade ship and 4 matchlocks will basically beat just about any amount of ships as long as you're not fighting several dozen of them at once and actively split them up a bit. I don't rate the black ship as highly because it's overkill and the upkeep is absurd, but at least you don't have to be Christian to get it.

I find comparing the two hero units a non-argument because they're used differently. You're arguing about the SOS on Kiyomasa's grounds, when the SOS' strength is exactly what you said: the charge and in which case one should be cycle charging. That's just my opinion as a TW player in general. I'm certainly no S2 master, but I feel like my point still stands nonetheless.

I'd respectfully disagree with you with Kiyomasa's and Shizugatake. They both have their roles in combat, and you pretty much nailed what Kiyomasa's katana cav is for. that said, the Spears are pretty much what Yari Cav want to be, only in less numbers. I don't think you put the SOS above Yari cav by any means, the numbers don't add up for that. I'd at least put them above Kiyomasa's when the thing Kiyomasa's is good for is what you say Katana cav shouldn't be used for. either way, both are good for hammer and anvil tactics, but the way you explained them in this video seems to have them operate in a bubble, isolated from the rest of your army. if you add in the army as well, Kiyomasa's can decimate blobs that have formed against solo units, where as the Spears would be a great guard (unintentional) against Cav units. That said, Yari Cav and Fire Cav being above them in the rank I'd agree with totally. Easier to recruit, more bang for your buck, and generally would be used in the same way as your hero units.

I don't know why I watch these videos. I never even build complex armies; I just build naginata samurai + samurai archer armies at max capacity and then walk around and autoresolve every single fight. If I want more armies I just build huge ashigaru armies

actually you are using katana cavalry wrong, if you want to beat other cavalry you gotta put ur cav into diamand formation, that way the enemy cav will inflict almost no charge damage, in the following melee katana cav will always beat even yari cav with 30-40 men lost

Great guard is good, but is way too expensive, and Kiyomasa's katana cavalry is a complete joke.

@@ivanvoloder8114 Ehm, actually... In my humble opinion, Christian Guard is the best cav in the campain of Medieval 2 (the best for online battles are Templar Knights). Recrutable from cities, stats of the Knights Hospitaller and pretty fast. Only downside is the lack of armor upgrades
