Happy to see Monster Mansion so high on this list. As a native Atlantan, that ride is an absolute classic and the refurb was done so lovingly. “Stay out of the marsh” has been common vocabulary for virtually every person I met growing up.

The first few seconds of Main Street in Adventureland (Altoona, IA) made me so happy! That’s my childhood theme park and I even worked there as a teen. I actually worked on Adventureland’s only dark ride, The Underground!

The precursor to Monster Mansion at Six Flags Over Georgia was a dark ride called Tales of the Okefenokee back in 1967. It lasted for 1 year, and was redesigned by Sid and Marty Kroft, before it closed in 1980. The storyline was based on the Uncle Remus books.

I went to Playland Park at age 11 (On my birthday too) with my crappy deadbeat dad. He told me all about how he used to go there, and when I heard that a dark ride from that place was on there, it took me back a good few years. And here's the kicker here: I never went on it! I'm kicking myself now!

I’m so glad you put “Monster Plantation” on here!! The first time I rode it when I was a kid my dad told me there was a Gilla Monster in there that loved to pull little girls ponytails 😆 Naturally I started crying. Ah Dad’s and the heckling of their kids..

if you ask me, the original haunted castle ride was way better than the upgrade and way more creepier. I mean it had a crying mummy that you would pass by under flickering candles and a demonic chef cooking his face. a guy impaled by spikes falling towards you and even some grim reaper looking guy throwing coal into a furnace and the best part of that ride is that it had the overture from phantom of the opera playing inside the ride which was perfect for creepiness in it.

There's another great non-Disney or Universal dark ride in the U.S. that wasn't on this list. You probably haven't been on it, so no problems here. This ride is another Haunted Mansion, and it's located at Funland in Rehobeth Beach, Delaware. It's a hidden gem, not many people know about it, but it has long lines there because it's very popular with the locals.

The one at Magic Mountain is particularly special because it's literally the only ride in the park you can cool off on. Every other ride in the park, you bake in the sun, even the flume ride Jetstream is no relief since they cut down all the trees that used to provide shade on it. Magic Mountain has always struggled with the idea that people sometimes want a little more out of a park then coasters. Don't get me wrong, those are certainly what I consider the best part, and if I didn't enjoy the park I wouldn't have been getting season passes for the last several years consecutively, but live entertainment, air-conditioned seated experiences, etc, are integral parts of a well rounded park too.

I grew up going to Lagoon and riding the Terror Ride! As a teen I got to go through it in the late 60’s with the lights on that was very cool! you should consider heading over to Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri...they have a couple of dark rides...one is called Fire In The Hole which is an indoor roller coaster with animatronics akin to Pirates of the Caribbean (but with hillbillies) and the other is the Flooded Prison Mine which is a mining theme animatronics of prisoners in a flooded mine...cool part is it's also a shooting ride where the guns actually work as do the counters (which are on the guns themselves)
