For the millions of people who have never been around livestock some practices may seem harsh. Raising any type of market livestock is not a petting zoo. You have to be tough enough to do what has to be done and protect your investment. Most animals can endure procedures and recover quickly.

I really enjoy the reality you bring to the real work that goes into farming. I think it’s sad you have to take so much time to explain yourselves about your farming practices but I do appreciate you being ambassadors of agriculture. You guys are awesome. As a farm boy I can relate to everything that you do and even code words like “chore clothes”. I can appreciate the prom story as I’ve had plenty of times my dad would look at me from coming home and tell me to get my chore clothes on. No other words had to be spoken as long as I got those clothes on as quick as I could and busted tail all day long.

Fantastic and informative video! When I was twelve or thirteen, (I am 59 yo now) we had a large animal vet. friend that took me on his normal and emergency weekend calls. I helped deliver twin calves once, (and also a breech, which was bad). He had me reach in to feel the calve's legs and where the heads were oriented for a good birth. It was a wonderful learning moment for me that I will never forget. He helped me learn about how life works. He also de-horned several cows while I watched. I realized then, that there is nothing glamrous about raising cattle. Cheers and Happy New Year to the Sonny Farms Family!!

There are alot of people that don't under stand about horns. almost all of your dairy herds do away with horns when the calves are young. When I had my oxen and go to fairs people would say look at the girl cow because they had horns ,would have to say no there bulls the horns are to help keep the yoke on when going down a hill it doesn't slip over there heads. And instead of using the powder the vet took barn cob webs and wrapped it around the horn when it shelled the outer shell . Great video keep them coming.

All you ranchers and farmers who post videos are doing us a great service; you are teaching us where our food comes from, what it takes to produce it, and the hard work involved. It is so easy for people to gripe about what they think is right and wrong with what you do and just get on a keyboard and gripe away. You remove the horns and people gripe; you leave them on and people gripe. I have an idea; just remove one horn and shut everybody up. Keep up the good work. As a Veterinarian I congratulate you and your father for such ease an gentle Cattle management. • Horns are skin appendix that grow in most bovine breeds, they are useful to defend themselves their grounds or even aggressors, or fight for the right to breed... also group social ranking. • bovines are gregarious animals & have social rank,,, this traduces into bunts and constant taunting... some times blunt trauma and even serious e gorging causing bruises and lesions... • No heat Exchange in apofisis corneum sinus... great job, keep it up. The type of person who would have an issue with removing horns from your livestock are the same kind of people who tout pictures of injured animals on the farm and claim that raising cattle is unnatural and cruel. You just can't win. Do what's right for your critters, at the end of the day those people wouldn't last till lunch on the feed lot. You know what they say; 'If you wouldn't accept their advice, don't accept their criticism.'

I grew up on a farm in southern MN. I seldom stayed out late in High School because my dad would always get me up earlier depending on how late I stayed out. He would never complain or criticize, just if you stayed out late, get up early. Stay out really late (like after midnight), get up at 4:30AM and do some really crappy job like shovel manure out the young-stock barns. I can remember barfing on the tractor wheel spreading manure at 5:00 am. Really a good system to keep your kids self-regulating.

As a retired farmer I fully agree that you need to dehorn, and all the videos I've seen of yours you really look after your stock, like bringing them in to calv etc. But sad to see dehorning without any form of painkiller !! When i was taught at college we would inject into the temple each side before debudding as we called it, and it was always done when calves were young. From UK

Our ranch used the branding iron method and a bladed scoop on calves. Didn’t look great but the damage later was far worse.

I was always given dehorning duty.... I also looked like I murdered someone with an axe at the end of the day 🤣 it’s a necessity to dehorn, one they fill out better and two they don’t hurt other cattle in the lot. And anyone who says other wise hasn’t any clue what farming and ranching is about. Truth of the matter is, we are the true environmentalist and true animal rights people. We can’t survive without taking care of our critters and land.

I see that they are using bands to dehorn the way bands are used to castrate. I wonder how that works. Sonne Farms needs to do it so I can see if it works.

@@nebraskafarmer9015 the horn has to have a notch filed init to keep the band on.sometimes the band breaks. I like Brians way better. You know the job is done, and done right.

@@nebraskafarmer9015 Tried it once on some bigger cattle. Worst thing ever, they went nuts trying to get them off the first day and moped around for the next 2 weeks. We saw the horns and knife cut all bulls, takes less then 5 min for both ends and back eating by the end of the day.
