Welcome to How to topdress a lawn with sand, in today's video I will be explaining how to scarify a lawn, about topdressing a lawn with sand - is sharp sand good for lawns? How to overseed a lawn and the benefits of top dressing a lawn.
All about aeration, scarifying, how to topdress a lawn with a sports sand, and overseed a lawn with fine grass. What type of sand? Sports sand is the best sand for topdressing a lawn, instead of using sharp sand. I will be discussing the benefits of using sports sand over sharp sand. this video was made in Belfast. Enjoy!

Another great Informative video. If I've ever added sand to lawns it's been mainly to help drainage. I use river sand or sharp sand. Clay is a big problem where I live and it's the only way to break clay down if at all. I totally take your point with sports sand though. I tend to blow sand rather than drag mat. Just suits me better.

Nice job Robbie. We’ve moved into a new house in February and the lawns were in a terrible state. I scarified and I kid you not there was 90% thatch and only a small amount of grass left! 🙈 I’ve got it back and looking pretty good but it will need a top dressing in autumn to help them on the way. This,video is a great help. Thanks

Great content as always, so glad I found your channel. Following your advice I've really improved the lawn in our new (Yorkshire) house over the last few months. The soil under our previously-neglected lawn seems to be pretty heavy with clay... when I dug out an area to level out some bumps the slabs were almost like bricks. I want to level out some more this autumn. Given my soil structure, after aerating/scarifying this autumn would you recommend I go for just sports sand or a sports sand/loam renovation mix?

@Premier_lawns_official
@Premier_lawns_official 4 жыл бұрын
That depends. Usually scarifying is enough to get the seed into the soil, Always try and not encourage people to use a roller as compaction causes all sorts of problems
@JohnnyCatFitz
@JohnnyCatFitz 3 жыл бұрын
Hiya Robbie, I know this is an older video but about compaction: My dad had been using a rider mower that weighs oh, 440lbs/200kilos! So, I imagine this has a terrible compaction effect; how could it not? I'd like to hear a little about that and mower suggestions. I think they went with the rider because both dad and his wife ( who has passed) had arthritic problems, but the yard size itself is fairly medium/small with some slope in the back. I'm looking into selling the Husqvarna 42 inch bladed beast and getting some sort of self propelled mower, possibly battery powered; especially since we're looking at a total renovation in the fall. So, any mentions on pros and cons of mower types for a self care lawn person could be helpful.

Hi, Your videos are helping me through lock down (in England) so thank you! I aerated, scarified and oversowed my lawn about 5-6 weeks ago after tackling a poorly drained winter and a leatherjacket infestation, and the lawn has really benefitted. That said, it is getting a lot of extra traffic compared to normal and is in dyer need of more seeding and levelling. Would you have any recommendations in the order in which to do so please? I'm warey not to seed now as we're too close to the summer months, and I'm warey not to level as the new seeds are only about 1-2 inches tall and very slender. Thank you!

Hi Rupert I love hearing peoples lockdown stories. Leather jackets - make sure you get ontop of them. If you have not treated yet with nematodes get onto that now as the window is closing. And then treat again in September and the following spring. amzn.to/2znQanm

@@Premier_lawns_official Well, I though your answer would be more like: If you want to apply a 5mm layer, then you convert that number to meters, 0.005 and multiple that by 300m2 and that gives you the 1.5m3 you’ll need, which is a bag 1000L and a half. Total of 1500 litres of top soil. I guess I didn’t formulate my question right, I should’ve ask how thick the layer of top soil should be. I just thought you’d know roughly how much you need per m2, that’s all.

I wouldn't get to hung up on particle sizes. That's an entire topic all by itself. More important to think of the shape of the particles, are they round (less likely to compact) or are they sharp. They make clay bricks out of sharp sand as it compacts well
@loslewis950

Sand doesn't belong in garden. According to the Institute of Food and Agriculture at the University of Florida, top dressing home lawns with sand is more harmful than helpful. Experts agree that sand should only be used on a lawn to level low areas, cover exposed tree roots and to fix heavy thatch build up. Even in those cases, it is recommended that you top dress with a rich, fine compost instead of sand. Sand particles cannot retain any nutrients, so applying a layer of sand year after year to lawns actually causes lawns to lose their fertility. Golf courses are built on sandy soil and specialized turf grasses that can thrive in sandy conditions are used on the greens. The grass seed or sod that most people have in their lawn is not the same as the grass on golf courses. If you have a fairly new house, your foundation was built on select fill which is this red clay material that strengthens the foundation sub floor. DON’T add sand on clay soil unless you want to end up with a concrete yard. A much better and organic solution is to use compost which will bio stimulate the root growth on your grass. IMO this is a very irresponsible advise being given by people that don’t know anything about construction or what’s underneath their sod 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Some of the advice given is truly shocking lol. My understanding comes from experience and training. @stephen turner my parents came from rural Ireland. My father never lost his strong Irish brogue. I have more relatives in Ireland than England and many friends there. I am at home with the Irish accent. However, I dislike that of Northern Ireland, with it's malstressed syllables and harshness to the ear. The presenter of the video, appears to be a very nice and knowledgable man. I was interested in his topic, but strained to understand him. I need no lessons in manners from anybody who suggests the violent one I presume suggested.
