My favorite blues are French Ultramarine (DV or RS), Cobalt Coelin (RS), Cobalt Teal (DV, QoR, or RS) or Cobalt Sea Blue (RS), and Ocean Blue (RS). I enjoy PB60 in mixes, but the slight drying shift annoys me when using it on its own. I love so many earthy greens but I'd have to say my favorites have been Denise's Green and Aquarius Green. I've more recently started trying Cobalt Green Deep and the darker Cobalt Turquoise.

the granulation of all of the schmincke colours is crazy! especially that last shade, it's gorgeous 😍😍

I used to give Ultramarine the side-eye every time it was in one of my pre-poured/manufactured palettes...that is until I started using it in my portrait studies, especially for BIPOC subjects. Juxtaposed with my beloved (discontinued) PO48, it is so gorgeous both next to the burnt orange and as they blend together in wet washes (and also PB36 Cerulean). Now I can't live without either blues on my palette.

For a warm and granulating cerulean, my fav is the Holbein, I found it to be less streaky than others. My fav Cobalt teal are the Cobalt Sea Blue( RS) and Turquoise Green( Sennelier) they have the same hue but the sennelier has really bad binder separation( the color is worth it though). One of my favorite "unique" blue is the Aquarius Cobalt Blue from RS. It’s quite opaque and granulating like a cerulean but stronger.

You've brought attention to these wonderful colors that I've been using for so long for my Forest mushrooms!!! What a treat to have a Friday video from you too. And my FAVORITE go to Blues/Greens are Indanthrone Blue from Rosa Gallery, Cobalt Green Deep from WN, Green Gold from WN and Cerulean Blue from WN as well!

As for deep blue's I like the sennelier indenthrone blue and white nights deep blue; light blue cerrulian is senneliers cerulean from the billy shovel botanical tube set. For greens I favor daniel smith undersea green and pyreleen green as well as the ds sap green for mixing conveniance. Teals I dont use that much but in the 36 palette from white nights you have a gorgious very translucent teal that I love for painting winter landscapes frozen puddles and such. I just love each color on the billy shovel palette other then senneliers version of quin gold, that I Hate and will be tossed for a naples yellow. I love me the rich warm grey by sennelier and my new favorite ever christmassy red is Royal Talens Rembrand artist version of Napthol red. It is the perfect bright santa red. It does not lend itself well for mixing but I just wanted the color for sake of squeeling ahw when wettng it :P

The desert green is an interesting one indeed! I like having one or two weird ones on my palette, though I tend to pick them out for specific paintings. One that you didn't pick but that I personally use a lot is perylene green (I use the one from Schmincke) I use it all the time for the shadows in the foliage. I like seeing other artists' color choices, it's always inspiring :)

I really love this series, Denise! I love hearing about what excites you about all your choices! I am trying to use up the Pthalo Blue GS in my main palette to eventually swap in Pthalo Turquoise by DaVinci like you have here as I prefer the hue. I keep Lunar Blue by Daniel Smith on my palette same reason you use that Forest Blue. I also think you get instantly interesting greens with it. I JUST did something interesting in my main palette and replaced Cerulean Blue with Cinerous Blue by Sennelier. I realized I rarely mixed with Cerulean and lately I want my palette to be very bright and saturated so I went with the Sennelier because I got that perfect hue which is perfect for the finishing details. I'm also very fond of an Indigo ... and I just enjoy them all. I love Daniel Smith's the best but any dark inky blue is great for quickly mixing darks. I also love PB29. I have a bunch and it's a classic for a reason.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but MaimeriBlu do a muted semi-transparent green made from PG17 (which for some reason they call hooker's green) that looks super close to that beautiful Florentine green, great for those of us in the UK who may find it hard to get hold of the latter 💚

Cobalt Azure by Schmincke is one of the most used (almost empty pan again 😲) paints in my dedicated palette, for mixing and stand-alone skies. So happy to watch your video after a really stressful week on the day job: Well done once more. And I do like your newer style of two layer swatching very much. Your calm (and calming) voice is allways a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for the video.

Hullo Denise, I do appreciate all of your efforts to educate your viewers! I am still learning and I have changed my favorite colors many times over the years! I have DaVinci Ultramarine Blue as a favorite staple in most of my palettes! I have Perylene Green from DaVinci too! You are the person that I credit for this green in my palettes. I of course have added your Denise’s Green. I used to have SAP green from DS but I have removed almost all of that brand from my collection, well my working palettes, I have found about 40 tubes/pans of colors that are stored in a box. I am a bit tight-fisted to simply toss them in the trash! I am looking forward to seeing paint 3 and onward with this paint selection and your evaluations. See ya next time!

Curious, why did you decide to remove DS completely when you still have usable color left? I used to be DS and only DS but I’ve been transitioning and buying a few DV as it’s cheaper but DS offers a few colors I can’t get anywhere else e.g. MANS (mont Amiata natural sienna). I also have one SCH on my palette but they’re super pricey.

@@vanessacastagnoli1126 I believe that DS has saturated the market with advertising and raised their prices accordingly! They make good paints, but they are not superior! I know they have plenty of haters but I left them when I tried to get answers form them about paint I purchased and no one would help me! I got bounced around by sellers and finally several people at one of their factories or customer service representatives. I was finally told "We don't need your business, get lost!" This is not acceptable behavior from anyone! I have found a wonderful customer service experience at DaVinci Paints and amazing paints too! I have even purchased their gouache set their paints are truly wonderful! I have Schmincke, Sennelier and M.Graham paints in my palettes and find them equally good paints! Most are more expensive than DaVinci so I buy more from them! Higher cost is not always superior. I tried 14 brands when I came back to paper and paint and I got warm and cool samples when I could I initially purchased a Mijello 36 set with palette and went on the get their 34 single pigment set afte using them for a couple of months. I only found DaVinci after watching a video by Denise Soden on her channel In Liquid Color and watched her color spotlight series and I had to try her Moody Trio from DaVinci. I hope this long winded answer has helped you, at least got you new directions to try!

The blues, cyans, and greens are really pretty, and the Desert Green looks cool with the separation of the Cadmium Red. I mostly use Indanthrone (my preferred blue) and Ultramarine for blues, and they are really valuable when mixed with yellows, oranges, and browns. I have multiple cyans, and I mostly use Phthalo Blue (GS) or M Graham’s (Phthalo) Turquoise, but I sometimes use Cobalt Teal (it mixes really well with Potter’s Pink). The only greens that I have are the Phthalo Greens, but they are both useful mixers, especially when I use the blue shade to neutralize my Quin Red Light or Alizarin Crimson hue.

My fav and most used blue is cobalt blue pale by renesans. Cobalt blue pb28 (ren) and cobalt teal pb50 (qor) make a great cobalt cerulean dupe. So good i dont keep cerulean on my pallete anymore. Only other blues i have on my main pallete are french ultramarine pb29 (davinci) , pthalo turquoise pb16(w&n) (only pthalo i use) and then qor's paynes grey if that counts too.

Ooh I’m so glad I saw this, have been eyeing up the Daniel Smith indanthrone blue but I might have to do some more research. Have you tried Roman Szmal’s version? It’s half the price of Schminke! We can’t get Da Vinci affordably here in Australia either 😢

Great vid! I love cobalts and cerulean but don’t use them anymore as I’ve removed ALL toxic colors from my palette which doesn’t make color choosing as easy. I currently have DS Manganese Blue Hue, SCH F.Ultramarine or DS Ultramarine, DV Indanthrene Blue (changed from DS version as I found that too chalky). I rarely use phthalos but do have a tube of DV Phthalo Turq. and DS Phthalo Blue GS.

@@parleymanderson7527that’s good to know! I haven’t even gotten to use the DV yet :( Still have a half pan of the DS I’m trying to bust through so I can add the DV. I’m sure it’ll be a big upgrade but I’ll keep in mind about the Sennelier.

I say ultramarine blue is anything but boring! I definitely judge brands based on their versions of ultramarine blue, and I have such a fetish (there's literally no other word to describe it in my head) for Mission's ultramarine blue deep...it absolutely GLOWS and granulates so softly, I almost plan paintings around using it.
