For this watch to still be working over 100 years later with that kind of complication and manufactured with ZERO CNC machines is absolutely mind-blowing and makes me truly appreciate the skill level of the craftsmen who built it.

@@dkexpat2755 CNC stands for computer numerical control. They use computer software controlled machines to machine parts to very precise tolerances. Because of this technology, tolerances of +/- 1/1000th of an inch are possible. The ability to do precise machine work is imperative to building an accurate watch as they require many small precision-made parts. Without CNC machining making precision parts takes a very skilled machinist with a good eye to make the parts properly.

Lately seeing KZfaqs like this one prompted me to dig out my old 140 year old Waltham train engineers pocketwatch that I bought 45 years ago on a lark from an antique dealer. Opened it up, cleaned it, and talked to my millenial son about it. He agreed with me that at that time these watches were the peak of technology and craftsmanship. I have also since then threw my Fitbit in a drawer and started wearing my gorgeous Noblia watch I bought myself 20 years ago. I realized how I missed wearing a fine watch.

My grandfather left me all my great grandfather's stuff he had during the military during WW2. He was in D-Day all the way till the end of the war. He was wounded 3 times and went back to his unit after each injury. After WW2 he became a world traveler and collected many artifacts based around WW2. I was handed down roughly 7 boxes of WW2 era items collectibles from all the major nations and countries involved in WW2. I have his original uniform, all his medals he got, and his journal he kept throughout the whole course of WW2. Included in the journal was the names and addresses of all his buddies he met, all the major events he was apart of, and a really wonderful note in the end of the journal talking about a German Soldier he met during peace time who could speak fluent English and he got to hear all about what it was like from the other side during the war. It's just amazing stuff and I had the whole collection appraised about 15 years ago for roughly $230k. I'll never sell any of it. I'd rather give it to museums than sell a single piece. It's pure history in my eyes as a lover and expert on WW2 history and that will also be worth more than any $ amount

@@olasek7972 This particular watch had been commissioned by, and custom made for, a gentleman named George Thompson in 1914. It was delivered to him in 1915. The model was not unique, but this specific watch was. That would appear to mostly account for the jump in price.

Shields Industries hard to comprehend that a PP owner would be so ignorant about the value, considering how much modern PP watches sell for, almost make me suspect he played dumb to add to suspense

My grandad left me a Werthers Original when I was a small boy and keep it in a matchbox with its original paper. I hope to have it valued soon and pass it on to my miserable grabbing offspring.

i understand what you're saying, but i think it depends on your situation. if you have a mortgage, kids, and others to take care of, and i owned that watch? i'd sell it in a second, if it meant my family is better taken cared of.

IIIIIIII especially at the current price, it’s exploded in price in just a few years, so I suppose I could sit on it a few more years if u wanted to squeeze some more out of it, but it’s life changing money and I’m not THAT greedy hehehe

A few years after the show, the guy decided to sell it...Sotheby's got somewhere around $1.3 million for it. Today it would likely go over $3 million.

Rick: Best I can do is 50 bucks and I am the one who's taking all the risk here. Gotta frame it up, hang it in the wall and it's gonna sit there for a while. Also the market is pretty limited as far as pocket watches go. So yeah 50 bucks, cash, right now.

Patek Philippe pretty much dominants the top auction prices for watches. Rolex has 7 of the 68 top and the rest is pretty much Patek Philippe's.

When I first saw the top I thought "it's okay, but not very complicated". Then he first pointed out that it had a minute repeater chime. 😮 Then he turned it over. Day/Date and moon phase. 😲 Then he said it had a leap year complication. 🤯
