Miss the era of cheap petrol, massive engines and stupidly good cars.

The "fuel is denser when its cold" is accurate but the tanks are stored far below the ground and the temperature down there almost never changes especially not from morning to mid day.

This is one of the contests for what I liked to watch Top Gear - not just crazy rides in super cars, but something more toned down.

I collected my 2016 Audi A8 4.2 V8 tdi from a dealership in London and drove it back to Newcastle @280 mile and averaged 56mpg. Can be a little heavy in town though.

I used to drive my 2006 3 litre diesel quattro A8 from beyond Geneva to home in N Yorkshire in a day via Calais-Dover, almost 900 miles. Still had enough in the tank to get to work and back the next day. Put it in sport mode however and you could really annoy hot hatches by keeping up with them on the twisty stuff in a limo.

This was a great challenge. One of the first episodes I watched when I was young. I rooted for him to make it.

Audi are truly great cars. I ran A6 Avant for 8 years. Best car. With careful driving it was capable of 800 to 900 miles on a full tank. Marvellous.

Just drove from Leeds to London on Saturday. As I was not fully awakened in the morning, I turned the cruise control on and average 51.0mpg. 59.6mpg on my way back in the evening with the cruise control off! I knew cruise control is less economical as it brakes more often but was surprised at the difference.

This was the first slice of top gear i watched many years ago. The rest was history

That's quite a challenge: driving a tank from Edinburgh to London round-trip on one tank of petrol. Maybe the 1st Christy suspension light tank, perhaps, but that's asking a lot from a tank...

It's 7am and the roads are quiet 🤫...well 20 or so years later that's no longer the case!

Fuel is sold by volume, but the energy content depends on the mass. Cold fuel has more mass per volume, so more energy per money :).

On thing to note right from the beginning is that he is driving in very cold weather which compared to normal temperatures can reduce cruising mpg by up to 20%. This is due to the increased density of the colder air.

I got from Edinburgh to Brooklands Museum Weybridge and back on just over 3/4 of a tank driving a 2005 VW Passat 2.0 TDi with 200,000 miles on it.

78.9p per litre. When I was visiting my sister in 2008 the fuel was around 1 pound per litre. And it was 80 miles from London to the south east. It was pleasant to watch litres going the same with amount :) In Poland it was around 3,5 to 4 pln per litre and it was very cruel for the wallet. Right now it's around 7 pln/litre for diesel, and 6,7pln/litre for petrol and it's still cruel for wallet. I've made 2200 pln last month, which is around minimal pay and you can do the math yourself.

I had a8 3.0 quattro....was doing 145mph and engine done big bang and that was end of the fun bit

Tesla today: the model s will do 390 miles! Audi in mid 2000s: 800 miles, 1 tank. 'Recharge' in 2 mins.

My 2002 A4 Avant 1.9 TDI = 62.8 mpg on the dot. Plus sunroof titled (increasing drag) n going much faster ... £50 diesel from London to Paris and back with fuel left over!!! Absolutely astonishing ... (Oh it's done 500,000 miles) Heard the ultra models even better, how, HOW THEY DO IT GUV??? 🦂

During the 2000s I would average 35 mpg on bmw 328i (was a poor Uni student) now on the same journey i do about 22 mpg. I remember driving behind trucks on the highway to decrease wind resistance, the car would be doing 40-45 mpg. Never brake was my moto. Was driving a 30k petrol bmw trying to save fuel. Your parents buy the car, you pay for fuel.

Audi employees were probably cheering like mad watching this.

Using air con and stuff when on the motorway is negligible as the engine is cruising nicely. You'd notice the drop in mpg more when using all that in town.

Around 7.4 l per 100 km for a V8 Diesel in a Audi A8 from that time is really good fuel economy for this type of car.

I remember watching this episode when it first came out and thinking how amazing that Audi look. I thought it was so futuristic. Now it looks old lol

I loved this challenge.. however he is wrong in the heater.. using the standard heater (no aircon/clima) doesnt impact fuel economy as it just uses heat from the cooling system.. no extra drain at all

Sadly this Audi A8 lasted only a year before it went for scrap.

Try using an empty two liet plastic milk carton, it wider top is ideal for male relief purposes unless you are a very big boy when then appendigies may get stuck.

In my opinion has the accelerate before the hill thing wrong. Diesel engines get the most out of fuel when under full power. Doing only a little work is not very efficient. So going up a hill is more economical if one substracts potential energy. Accelerating before the hill mostly adds air drag.

19.8 gallons in the tank... or as we say in Germany: 75 liters. Btw: You can fill a cube with 10x10x10 centimeters to get 1 liter. Or as they say: 6.1 inches x 3.4 inches x half of a quarter horseshoe.

I like the fuel gun.

In Australia during the 2020 lockdown I saw 89.9 cents a litre and less than a dollar a litre in lots of places. That is about 45 pence a litre, if that. People with fuel efficient cars lost out on that round 😄

My 1.9TDI ASV Octavia 2002 did 78MPG from Falkirk to GLA Airport. 55MPH AVG I was doing 60MPG to london with that car...

Looking back at this gives me a weird feeling inside, i must’ve been 12-13 watching this on TV, little did i know that i was watching the gold era standard of content. Looking back now that i’m a grown man in my late 20’s and it makes me happy and sad at the same time to know that younger generations will not know what it was like to watch TV shows without the constant political messages pumped into your brain. What an era this was.

I’d do a challenge where I drive from London to Paris and back on one tank of fuel, but in a diesel hatchback with a 1.5 litre engine.

78.9 a litre. how have we allowed fuel to increase by so much. Its all just taxation on the fuel. Oil was around $25 a barrel. It is only $64 a barrel as posting this.

Car throttle tried to do this in a skoda. They succeed but by god I bet they wish they had this Audi instead of a 430k mile skoda!

I love this car, it's the car that Jason Statham filmed from the transporter movie, well I don't think the same engine but in the end .. great car, with consumption under 7 liters, a v8 ... good consumption on the open road, without brakes always ... I don't know if you notice, but old cars are always much better and much more attractive in design than the new ones that come, am I right? to live to be loved

Contrary to what he says it is possible to make the journey. he quoted the combined MPG, which as he started will not make the journey. However as we know the journey he made was not a combination of driving urban, non urban ect but indeed a very long journey driving at the optimum speed for MPG Therefore the car was able to make the journey.
