My 9 year old Rottie recently passed and I've also had GSD's in the past but I can easily say that while a GSD may best a Rottie in various competitions I'll still take a Rottie any day over the GSD when it comes to companion and family guardian. My Hanna bonded to us like no other dog and she was the self-appointed head of security at my house. She knew her boundaries and was super obedient but she didn't allow any shenanigans when it came to me or our other dogs. I saw a mix breed try to get after my wife's beagle out at the park and Hanna gave him a quick muzzle punch in the side and then gave him that "Don't start nothing, won't be nothing" look and he backed right off. She immediately went back to her happy-go-lucky-self...

That sounds like the Rotties I have owned!! Including the male who saw a suspicious person walking towards me one day. He put himself in a beautiful stance, puffed out his chest, showed every tooth he had, and gave one devil-sounding WOOF🤪 The guy just about tripped over his own feet as he turned and left the are quickly! My Rottie turned, came over to me and rolled over for belly rubs💕😍💕

They're so, so gorgeous, but every single one I've met seem so aggressive even when walking past them at a safe distance :( I can imagine it's because they haven't had much social training and them being such big dogs it might just be a bit more frightening to see firsthand than a growling German Shepherd.

@@1packatak Definitly! Breeders of dogs with a strong personality, the dogs in the vid and then some, like Boerboels, Mastifs etc. should select the new owners carefully for experience, time to spare, housing (yard or not), etc. Not sell a puppy to just anyone, that's asking for trouble.

Agreed! I'm from the PNW, my mom bred rotties and GS. We lived in a very rural area (like most of WA is outside of the big cities), when we moved south we got dobermans. I feel like dobies are better with personal protection while the GS and rotties do more properties and livestock protection. These dobies are smart, they 100% always pay attention to their owners and don't want to be away. It works better for us now!

Definitely agree with German Shepherd & Rottweiler - great dogs all round!! Malinois are awesome - but as Will says without the training they are worse than a double edged sword..Wish you also had included the Boerboel but I guess it depends on where you are based. But they have been booming in popularity and they are amazing dogs especially if well trained from an early age..Great work as always

The close companionship this dog is, surprised me. This breed just want to be near you (the leader) as much as possible.

I like in your videos that you consider each dog breed's temperament and instinctive side. Most dog specialists cover it all with the saying that with the good training every dog is cute and lovely. It's a very vague statement. And dangerous. Some independent dog breeds are very difficult to train. There wasn't a need for training for hundreds of years. That's why they had them, for their instincts. And now, when these dogs became jobless, they need to be retrained as pets. It's a bigger job than people think.

I'm still partial to the American Akita. I didn't expect them to be on this list due to their independent nature and high requirement for a strong and consistent pack leader, but they still take the cake for me. Akita's naturally guard and protect so well that it often is instinctively done TOO WELL and you have to train them OUT of guarding so fiercely. I've worked very hard with both of mine through socialization and setting boundaries that they allow people into the home that they don't know when I invite them in. BUT! I don't want a guard dog that hesitates when something bad is happening and the Akita will not hesitate. No one just walks into my home, so if someone did I trust the Akita won't wait for me to protect and this is what I want. In addition, the fierce bond the Akita has with their owner is unlike any master-dog relationship I've ever had. Mine don't even like me being out of their sight. They always want to stay close enough to be able to see me with their eyes. They don't need to cuddle, they don't need or seek constant affection, but they do need to know where you are to keep an eye on you and keep you safe. Mine will lay in a position for hours a few feet from me never moving, but as soon as I get up and move to another room they follow me to that room and lay down once again in a spot a few feet away.

Any big dog has the potential to be good at their job if trained that way. Local young lad near me has an Akita and unfortunately he thinks he's the bomb. Both dog and owner. I was out walking my dog rotty/Tibetan mastiff bitch. The dog came over and started trying to dominate my female I asked the guy to pack it in. He said he's just asserting his dominance. Lol clown. That Akita really regretted it's actions. The owner never stopped it so I knew it matter of time before my girl reacts. When she did the Akita shat itself and ran away. Something I always say to people don't get a male dog if you want a protection dog. A female will naturally defend you way more than a male.
@camillahunt3247
@camillahunt3247 2 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with your assessment of the Akita. I have a 2 year old male that weighs 145 lbs. Despite socialization and consistent training, he barely tolerates other people...and I have to be vigilant around other dogs...well any animal really. He is always near me...however, he can be quite affectionate. They are natural protectors.
@camillahunt3247
@camillahunt3247 2 жыл бұрын
@@roddymac998 That's not necessarily true. Genetics, socialization, and training are all needed for good protection dogs. The owner of that Akita shouldn't own that dog if he couldn't properly handle him.
@roddymac998
@roddymac998 2 жыл бұрын
@@camillahunt3247 yes I agree with your statement. But I also very aware people tend to go for males due to size alone. This can be the first mistake.females including most wild pack and herd animals are the ones that will defend against threat more than male dogs. Males tend to fight each other. To be controller of pack. Some would say alpha male. But that's another whole discussion. Especially based on the original paperwork being false regarding the theory of alpha. I lean towards alpha couples than just alpha males. Anyway I digress in a situation of protection the females instinct to do that is naturally more entwined ... a lot of males can be outwardly aggressive or boistres sum would say where as females are not as reactive to everything. I am always more weary of a big female as opposed to a big male. It's interesting to talk about though.

Boerboel is the best, most of the dogs on here the average 90kg man would be able to beat in a 1vs 1. No chance with a boerboel

I agree they are really badass but a 50kg dog will mess up most men, most police k9s don’t exceed 90 but the boerboel should definitely be on the list my dogo argentino is an excellent guard Doug but the exercise need is nuts lol

Not to cause any hate but my sister has 2 German shepherds from 2 different rep. Breeders and one just doesn't care and ignores most of what is going on and would rather eat or chew on something of by herself then the male hides and pees himself constantly. My sister got them as pups and this is how both dog have always acted and the are 2 now. They are not guard dogs.

Another great breed not on this list is rafeiro do alentejos, it's a Portuguese breed that are very good livestock guards, my tia has a farm and her rafeiro is the biggest baby with family and people it knows but is covered in scars from encounters with other dogs and gypsy's trying to steal livestock

This is more a list of popularity not what is the best guard/protection dog. Because if I were to select a dog to be just a guard protection dog then I would take a Caucasian shepherd or a central Asian shepherd over any of these

I'll take a Caucasian orcharka any day. A well behaved CO is an absolute joy, loving and kind. A real "covid" dog, people will keep 2 meter distance at all time. But that stare will stop any would be perpetrator in their tracks.
