It is soo good as the original with the nostalgic elements of the first one, and the fact that there is just little CGI and the pressure these actors went through to make this movie possible, and as u mentioned very few movie sequels as good as its first one; there is one more movie sequel i will recommend for you to watch, the same director joseph kosinski directed a sequel to the heaviest early cgi movie made in the 80's, Tron and Tron:Legacy it is soo good in present day to its story, graphics and action.

I heard Tom Cruise fought for Val Kilmer to have a role in this movie. A few years ago, Kilmer underwent treatment and operations for Throat Cancer and while he has been cancer-free since, the ordeal has reduced his voice to a rasp. Still, he actually did speak his lines in this movie, albeit digitally altered for clarity. The WTF-Maneuver that one enemy plane pulled near the end is actually something that exists. Its called Cobra Manoeuvre or 'Pugachev's Cobra'.

Don't count on it. The Cry Bullies were up in arms about this movie. HW won't let them win because the movie isn't woke. They were publishing articles begging other film makers not to take any lessons from the success of this movie, because TC committed the crime of just making a movie to be entertaining for entertainment's sake. The female and POC characters weren't artificially injected for some preachy message. Phoenix was just a character who happened to be female. If they wanted the Oscar they'd need a side story going on and on about how oppressed she is everything she had to do to beat the patriarchy. Etc. Etc. Some woke crap will win. The Woman King probably, and if you disagree it's because you're racist and sexist... Do people still watch the Oscars?

Fun facts/eater eggs for this movie (if not known already) they filmed about 80% of the air scenes practically. The actors went through 3 months of real military flight training to ride in real F-18’s actually going full speed and pulling G’s. So all the reactions on their faces are legit. Tom really launched off the carrier before the mission. (A shot he wanted in the original but they wouldn’t let him). Penny Benjamin was referenced twice in the first film by goose and his wife (the admirals daughter. Iceman’s cancer in the movie is actually Val’s real cancer. He cannot speak anymore in real life so they pretty much had no choice but to make it a thing in the movie. The little he does isn’t even actually him they used his sons voice and had him mouth it. The test flight in the beginning (Mach 10) Mach is a measure of speed not the G force, Mach 10 is ten times the speed of sound so over 7,000 miles per hour. The fastest recorded speed from a plane in real life is from the SR-71 blackbird at a little over Mach 3 maybe 3.5 I think.

The original Top Gun was absolutely a huge movie. Its what took Cruise's 'rising star' and catapulted him into the stratosphere. It made a shit ton of money. $357 million on a $15m budget. That's close to a billion in today's money. Besides that, it raised enrollment in the navy for piloting by leaps and bounds. This movie, Maverick, is absolutely incredible. Written SO well, it handles everything just about perfectly. Very well done by the writers and Kosinski.

Whoever told you that the original wasn't crazy-popular back in the day is either suffering from dementia or outright pulling your leg. XD I was there opening weekend in 1986 and Top Gun was all the rage. Theaters were PACKED. Navy Recruiters were set up at theaters all over the country (enlistments SURGED!). Every kid in school wanted to be a Navy pilot when we grew up - we would buddy up and pick our pilot/co-pilot teams on the schoolyard playgrounds and make plans of enlisting together "someday." While we didn't all become flyers, some of did follow that dream and eventually join the Navy.

The reason why the ejection chair didn't work was because neither of them pulled out the two pins prior to flight. My favorite tidbit is that even though Jennifer Connelly is afraid of flying, she has so much trust in Tom Cruise that she didn't even let Tom know that she was afraid and just flew with him in his P51K. BTW, Tom's P51K is worth 4 million dollars. His character, Maverick, would be broke, as all his money would go into the plane, it's gas and insurance. Tom Cruise is a certified airplane mechanic and really maintains that P51K mustang.

Don't know if you were aware, but the actors are really riding in those jets! They all trained in flight school for six months and most of the shots of them in the cockpit were real, they rode in the back of two seater jets while real naval aviators were piloting the aircraft from the front seat.
@CoffeeMatt10
@CoffeeMatt10 Жыл бұрын
22:30 a pilot will always try to save the plane, ejecting is a last resort due to the physical effects of it… some pilots have had their careers ended, some even suffered life changing injuries, and even a few have died… ejections put so much force on the body that a pilot will only do it when they know 100% they can’t save the plane. There is a 3 strikes rule too, 3 ejections and you’re grounded permanently. In reality, Coyote (blacking out) and Phoenix and Bob (recovering from ejecting) are now off the mission for medical reasons, but this is of course a movie. This entire sequence and the following couple of scenes are a hell of an emotional rollercoaster. Tension, relief, tension, relief, tension, sadness… all in about 5 minutes. 30:33 there was a lot of foreshadowing throughout: “Despite your best efforts, you refuse to die.” “Someone’s not coming back from this.” “You’ll be back in the air with your tail on fire.” “I’m never gonna leave you again.” “Don’t break her heart again.” “We’ll talk, when we get back.” 37:56 “thank you for saving my life.” “It’s what my dad would’ve done.” 🥲 gets me every time. Fun facts: the bar scene where we meet the new pilots, Miles Teller learned how to play Great Balls Of Fire. That scene was a live take with the cast and extras joining in, they did such a good job that it made it onto the OST and they edited it into a music video. So Miles Teller has an officially credited cover of the song. The scene where Darkstar flies over Ed Harris and the security booth was one take… they used an F-18 as the “placeholder”, flew it low and fast, and it actually ripped the roof up! They only shot one take because they damaged the booth… they only needed that one take 😂 Ed Harris took that blast like a boss too. Tom Cruise set up a training program for the cast to get them into shape and to build them up for the G forces that they would take during filming, as he wanted the most real footage as possible. The cast were sat in the backseat of the two-seat version F-18, while an actual pilot flew in the front… he also taught them how to operate the cameras and how to direct themselves, so they are acting and directing while pulling up to 7 Gs (they never went over that, as stated by Rooster, the F-18 isn’t meant to be pushed harder than that, and also it would have caused a lot of actual blackouts). The scenes with the F-14 are all CGI due to there being no active Tomcats anywhere outside of Iran, but the scene where they start it up inside the hangar was an actual F-14 from San Diego Air and Space Museum. Through their time in the actual jets, Miles Teller and Glen Powell gained enough flight hours to take their tests and get their own licenses. Powell revealed that Cruise got him a present for passing his test - a stunt driving session 😂

Val Kilmer’s scene makes me cry because his health. He has throat cancer. That is why he rarely acts now. It hurts for him to talk now. Watch his documentary Val on Amazon Prime

#1 movie and best sequel of 2022. #1 movie of the decade (so far). Tom Cruise's biggest film. 2nd film to gross over $1 billion in theaters during the pandemic. A great story with so much nostagia of the original. To be made and to be made as real as possible makes this a great piece of work. Seeing Val Kilmer as Iceman again was so heartwarming, even with knowing what he's really gone through. Top Gun has been a series of video games, 18 in row (1986-2010). Good run for movie to game adaptations. I played the first game as an kid on the NES. Also had the 18th and final game on PS3 subtitled "Hard Lock" (2010). Set years after the first film, Maverick as an instructor and his best student, Lance Webb aka Spider takes on an elite special mission (predates the movie sequel's story, crazy). But in any event, the 3 years of waiting for TG:M was so worth the admission.

Just came back from watching it for the third time in the theater. So good! It's an amazing experience in the theater. If anyone hasn't seen it in a theater with DBox seats, I highly recommend it.

I agree with ya on saying this sequel definitely works out for this film, as if it wasn't for this gap between the years of Top Gun - Top Gun Maverick then it probably wouldn't have made as much sense for viewers to experience as well as the actors. I feel like this is partial why the Karate Kid and Cobra Kai series works out so good as well. You should check them out as well if you haven't.

G force is different from mach mach 1 is the speed of sound so going mach 10 is 10 times faster than the speed of sound while the g's are the force of gravity

Mach is a good method for getting the speed of very fast objects, but it's a little imprecise due to how the speed of sound changes based on air density, temperature, even humidity, but at the altitudes most planes operate in it's usually in the high 600's to low 700's. So mach 10 is around 7000 mph, or fast enough to circumnavigate the earth in about three and a half hours!

Grew up loving the original film. Maverick is a masterpiece. Saw it in theaters 4 times and might just go a 5th. It’s the best film I’ve seen in years.

Here's a thought. The main mission of this movie is pretty much the Death Star trench run from A New Hope: a team of bombers have to run low to avoid turrets/missiles. They have to hit a very small target to destroy a weapon underneath, using the aid of a computer system that Luke/Rooster eventually dismisses, trusting their instincts instead. The only difference is that the enemy in Top Gun Maverick only engages after the mission is complete, and of course the movie goes on lol I think this might be my favorite movie of the year, not even joking.

to answer one of your questions about G's, no. in the beginning he was going Mach 10.3 that's speed, G's are gravitational forces against the body.
