I'm a skateboarder and have a really good balance. I thought ice skating would be easy. I tried to do a hockey stop in rentals, long story short I tore my rotator cuff from landing on my shoulder so hard 😅😂 I'm hooked!! I can't wait to go ice skating again!! I'm definitely buying my own skates first

As someone who's worked behind the rental counter I would always be happy to give out a different pair of skates, don't feel embarrassed to ask. Most of the time it was so busy that I wouldn't even notice the flaws of the skate, was just trying to keep up with the line and not make people wait too long. But as you said in the vid, the next pair may not be so good either, I guess it depends on the rink but where I worked pretty much all the skates were worn out and dull. Especially the small and average sized skates -- the larger sizes (like 11 and up) were generally a bit better since fewer people fit those. I was at an outdoor rink and we had a super limited budget since our profit each year was very weather dependent.
Жыл бұрын
That is the case with the rinks that I coach out of too. Most of the skates are worn out, with bad laces, and dull blades. The more common sizes are the worst! The smaller and larger sizes are a bit better because they are not used as often. In my experience, rinks don't replace rental skates for many, many years and try to get the most out of every dollar they invest in them. Unfortunately, this translates to a poor customer experience with many people deciding that skating is too difficult and painful. I wish rinks in general would do more to ensure the quality of the rental skate experience. That is why I strongly encourage all skaters to get professionally fitted for their own skates if they plan to skate more than a time or two!

I'm not sure if I mentioned this before, but I had a slight sizing issue with the rentals when I first tried ice skating. I suffer from ingrown nails on the "big" toe on each foot, and after an hour my toes were bloodied. The rentals probably needed to be a half size up, but they served their purpose. As you know, I am seeking my own skates now. It's been a couple years since I've been skating because I only have a seasonal rink locally, but I am looking at traveling once a week for lessons until time comes that I move to a city with a rink(move is pending over the next few months to a year). As a diabetic, my doctors have told me that movement is good for me, so I figure(no pun intended) if I have to exercise, might as well be enjoyable.

When I was at my rink, they gave my sister some skates which were like normal shoes with blades on them. No ankle support, the laces were literally shredded then tied into a knot. This was when I started ice skating so I couldn’t even help her. Sometimes I wish ice skating rinks took better care of skates 🤦‍♀️ Thank you for helping me as always!

I agree that the rinks should take better care of its rental skates, but most won't. That's why I always suggest that you get your own skates from a reputable professional specialty shop!

Our rink is pretty good. They do sharpen the skates. They can't always keep on top of it but they do send small batches of pairs up to the shop for sharpening. Public skate during the week is two hours and fifteen minutes, three and a half hours weekend evenings. During public skate they zam every 1 hour (takes fifteen minutes) and change direction after each zam. Laces kept up on too. They will not let you walk off the rubber padded area. You have to take the skates off to say, go to your car.

You are lucky! Unfortunately, not all rinks are that diligent.

My one, hitting the ice after years and years away...if you used to use hockey skates, make sure you get the same type. You dont want muscle memory to kick in and go full hockey strides, hit a pick on figure skates and utterly eat the ice in a sudden faceplant. I have done this...I dont reccomend 😅

I was just at an ice arena and got rental skates. Trouble is, I'm at a half size optimally, but they only had full sizes. So I had to go half a size up. That's what the extra sock is for. I wore two socks, so the fit was not bad. Now here's the fun part. The lip around the top of the ankle of the boot actually sliced into my ankle. I still have a cut there a week later. And that was the best skate I tried on, after going through 3 different pairs. Time to get my own skates, eh?

Жыл бұрын
You should definitely discuss this with your coach. I don't generally suggest the entry level Riedell skates because I feel there are other options that work better for most skaters. Depending on your size there are options from Edea that are less expensive than the Ice Fly such as the Chorus, Overture, Wave, and Movato. If the shop is an authorized Edea dealer they would better be able to assist you!

I recently watched your other video of the mistakes when buying skates and stated that I had trouble using the skates with laces when I rented them at a rink and you recommended this video. Would you say I should give the lace skates another try when I buy my own? I was going to buy the kind with buckles but your other video mentioned those aren’t the best. I want something in good quality that would give me the best performance.

Yes, definitely go for skates with laces when purchasing your own! Make sure that you get fitted for your skates by a professional in a specialty shop, rather than purchasing online or in a big box store like Dick's or WalMart.

Hello! I’m a fellow figure skater myself and I wanted to ask you, how do you get yourself to fall? I cannot get myself to go fast enough or do harder stuff because I don’t want to fall. I look around the rink to find many other people falling (hard!) and getting up like it’s nothing when I barely hit my knee and almost cry. Is it just high pain tolerance or are there some tips or tricks? Please tell me your secret!

@Me_______

It probably was taught to me but I learned how to skate at a very young age then took a break, once I picked up the hobby again I must’ve known how to skate from muscle memory! So, once I picked up the hobby again I must’ve not been taught that.

1. You rented skates. Seriously, I get it. You want to try skating out because you aren't sure if it's for you. The problem is rentals are always complete trash. You have a bad experience and think it's not for you. If you can barrow some skates or even get a cheap used pair, you would be way better off. With that used pair you can ensure it has a fresh sharpening on it. Makes all the difference in the world.

Hello Aimee, I’ve been having severe pain with wearing a 7 in skates. The weird thing is, it feels snug on the foot and I can wiggle my toes, however, the ball of my angle is being crushed in the boot. Today, I wore padding but it still was being crushed to much. The rest of my foot feels perfectly fine though. Do I need a bigger size? Is the ball of my ankle a little bigger than others?
Жыл бұрын
I'm unsure what the ball of your ankle is. But, it sounds as if you could benefit from getting fitted by a professional tech that can order you the correct size for your foot and shape the boot as necessary for your comfort. I'd appreciate it if you could help me on this. So i went ice skating for the first time a few days ago and I'm an 8.5 on shoes so I went with an 8. I even tried my friend's 9 to make sure the 8 was not too small. After just 10 minutes both skates were really uncomfortable. they were hurting both sides of my ankles. it felt like my foot was being squished on each side and my blood circulation stooped.
Жыл бұрын
It's hard to tell without seeing the issue. But, if you wore thin socks (that were not bunched up), didn't have your pants tucked into the top of the skates, your toes were brushing the front (but not squished), your foot wasn't sliding around from side to side, and your heel wasn't rising up. and the skates was tied nice and tight, a few things are possible: 1. It could be a broken down boot that wasn't offering enough support for your height, weight, and body composition. 2. The boot could be twisted or the the blade could be torqued. 3. The boot was too narrow for the width of your foot. 4. All of the above. If you want to keep skating and the rental skates are not working for you, I suggest that you look into getting fitting for your own skates. I have a bunch of videos that can help you here: kzfaq.info/sun/PLhIvo-BmGcaWrdSOyrzbgzakn8HtnAGqV

Hi, I'm from Hanoi, Vietnam and just recently got an interest in ice skating. My city is tropical and only has 1 indoor ice ring, I wear those blue rental skates with black plastic straps and I just got two blisters on the inward side of my foot likely due me being flat footed. There are no shops in the country where I can buy my own skates, so I'm just planning on wearing a tighter size and bring in thinner socks next time. If that doesn't work either, then I guess I will have to skate until blisters turn into calluses 🥲
6 ай бұрын
Blisters result from increased pressure that is more intense for a shorter period of time than the pressure that causes a callus. Blisters do not always become calluses. Blisters and calluses that are untreated may become infected and turn into non-healing wounds. I highly recommend that you look into purchasing skates of your own even if you have to order them. I also suggest that you look into orthopedic insoles. I have another video that may help you: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g9eJoKiDqJvYl58.html
