After watching F1 for 25 years, then following this week, I was today years old when I realized why the Indy 500 requires a week of practice and is one of the most unique motorsport events in the world. Knowing a little more puts things in perspective. #mechanicalgrip

@@hotdoglover1573 couple things. Depends mainly on when and how much. If it's a torrential rain with no end in sight, they usually postpone it a day. If it's a small shower they may delay and stop the race and restart when safe. Last if they make it over halfway (I think) they can officially call it a complete race. There's nuance to this but that's the big points

@@hotdoglover1573 If the weather clears quickly, later in the day. Sometimes, they move the race to the next day. In 1986, the race was scheduled for Sunday, May 25, but rain postponed the race until the next day which was also rained out. The race was rescheduled and successfully run on Saturday May 31. The 1997 race was scheduled for Sunday, May 25, but was postponed to the next day by rain. Rain limited the race to only 15 laps on May 26. The race was completed on Tuesday, May 27.

Thanks a million for these videos. This Indy 500 is my first exposure to Indy Car. Loving it! Appreciate the no commercials (adverts) and minimal banter. Commentary is spot on and very informative. Also, thanks for showing full laps in-car (onboard)! That is the best viewing imo.

Please don’t rain🙏it is such a pain for us commuters especially since most of us booked hotels/airbnb’s that can’t be refunded. If it does get postponed please make it next Saturday don’t pick a weekday that sucks for everyone working..

Looks like severe thunderstorms are in the forecast at Indy on race day. There's 2 ways this can go: Storms pop early, and the race can start later. Or storms pop late, and while the race runs, it may be cut short.

@@laugechristophersen9913 indy cars arent really meant to drive in the rain. they don't have a whole bunch of downforce and to get the downforce they need they would have to be going 220 mph consistently through every corner which is an absolute terrifying concept to think about. if it's so slick and marginal for these cars to around the track out when it's dry it's probably 10x trickier driving on a wet track

I watched this carb day practice only because I have been there in the late 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000's, but what happens after this race? Not having two more 500 mile races is horrible for the series. I can't believe that Roger can't see that. This really makes this race dangerous. These guys and ladies don't get enough time now days at these speeds. Then you have the cars. Old and boring. The race is like Groundhog Day. It's just the same thing every year. When the rookies can run those speeds without consequences so quickly, something is very wrong. I use to love Indy, and I guess I still do having grown up going there for so long back when it was up to the driver to drive the car, and not just the car making so easy to run flat out. The series has to change. The car's have to change. It's just a parade around there now, taking lines comin off of turn 2 and 4 that you use to never see. Those curbs too should go. They are going to kill someone. The windscreen needs to go to. Use the hallo like F1. Getting bugs on your helmet visor is part of racing. They might as well enclose the entire car and be done with it. Sorry, but this is now "Just Another Race"

Ive been watching this race since 1970s. And I got to go a couple of times in 2009 and 2010. I loved it. As much fun as I thought it would be it was ten times more fun to be there at the track.

Question....seeing that the teams are running quite a few laps during final practice, do the teams typically change engines before the race?

I don’t know about changing engines…But I was told by a mechanic in 2018 that after qualifying, they take the cars back to their headquarters and break them down to the bolts before reassembling them and bringing them back to Indy.

No. An engine change this late would result in penalty, lost grid position.

In Indycar it's called an aero screen. They use the same high impact glass that fighter jet cockpits use.

they do practice pit stops, usually in the earlier practices before the final one. Today is about taking the car from qualifying trim to making it race ready, traffic running, and final adjustments. Pit stops and stop and go stuff will have been done earlier

They're trying to get away from the turbulence caused by the car being too close to the wall. There's a lot going on at 240 mph.

Wheel stagger...they're canted for the cirners and naturally drag the car in...

@@codymoe4986 Surely you can do better than that. If you look at the cockpit cam of any car, you'll notice the steering wheel is turned slightly to the right to compensate for the stagger you mentioned, turning right to go straight. The stagger actually pulls the car away from the wall.

Practice is all about fine tuning performance parameters, and also letting the drivers get a better feel of how their car handles on the track, so there’s not really any diminishing return.

Said a few year's ago she really didn't like racing why have her there? Should have passionate Indy announcers. How about David Malukas? He would be great even at a young age.
