In this video, I will be walking through different Synology features that you can use to help protect yourself from ransomware. I will be discussing the active backup suite, snapshots, and immutable snapshots. I will be doing these setups on an RS2324+, but these apply to many different Synology units.
Synology sent this to me for free, but they are not sponsoring this video, and they did not have any editorial control.

You just sent shivers down my spine! I offer managed backup services to my clients, and I had no idea that a NAS could do these things. I see more Synology + NASes in my future...

Love the flex “This was a NAS I was sent for free… because I asked.” 🤣 💪🏻 It's clear that Synology believes supporting your channel is a win-win. Honestly, I wouldn't have dared to buy a NAS or figure out how to set it up if I hadn't found your videos, and I bet loads of others feel the same. You’re a real gem to the community, and for Synology too! With that said, it’d be awesome, Will, if you could use your voice and your platform to nudge Synology towards fixing some of their not-so-great policies that kinda undercut the value you’ve highlighted. Like, how they haven't refreshed the compatible third-party HDD list for the 1821+ in forever (over four years!). We’re forced to hunt down nearly extinct drives or pay through the nose for Synology's branded options. It goes against the whole 'great value' vibe by limiting our choices and hiking up costs. I know it's a bit delicate, but we (the community) could really benefit from having you speak up for us. You've got the kind of influence that can drive real change. Keep up the good work!

I didn't know ransomware is a feature in my Synology NAS. I thought it would be a appliance instead. 😂

Great content and a very important topic. The good news is all the key items you mentioned are deployed for any of my customers using Synology especially Active Backup for Business. If RTO is important to your business, you better have it deployed for all your important PCs/Servers. Completed a Bare Metal restore for a customer a week ago. They were only down for 2 hours. Thanks for getting the word out.

5:27 You can also backup Proxmox Windows (servers too) VM's and it works really well.

I would be all on board if these rack mounted units supported third party HDD and SSD. It really get expensive when you get locked into the ecosystem, or risk loosing money if the storage mediums you buy are not supported anymore. I have no choice but to look for alternatives.

Unfortunately immutable snapshots are not possible with Synology NAS older than 2020 like my DS918.

Could you do a complete guide to setting up and backing up a home user NAS, including setting up openVPN and the firewall , with detail about what to open. I am using Iphone and OpenVPN and can't figure out the IPs from my phones network , and what to allow through firewall ...

Our company has been using a Barracuda Backup. It costs us $16,000 every three years. It doesn't even backup O365. Guess what we just switched to 🙂

I would love to see a you do a updated video on folder encryption and volume encryption. Has anything improved since release (key manager) and if so what is the safest way to migrate? I love snapshot, but I hate not being able to browse through them due to encrypted folders.

Great Video ... Wondering, can I restore a Windows PC from ABB to a VMM?
@ryanw8664

Probably a dumb question, but is there any disadvantage to setting up a computer backup as a "server" in Active Backup for Business (ABB) instead of as a “computer”? Since the former allows for restoring to a virtual machine, whereas backing up as a regular computer does not, what would be the use case for backing up as a computer when it provides less flexibility with restoration?

Honestly I have wondered the same thing. I think you may loose some compression or similar as it has to be stored in a bootable format. But I have not found anything documented

You are wrong saying that it is “impossible” to delete “immutable” snapshots. They are simply read-only and the right command (not in GUI) can change them to read-write! Then you better have more than ONE of such devices for when one fails. Synology is very good, but expensive. I do the same things with fully open source and free software. Does take a little scripting, but then you can do whatever you want/need and never depend on any one vendor/solution. With the saved money, I can have an identical 2nd unit to keep hourly full backup of the backups (snapshots plus the last 10 clones, ready to be started if needed). For certain setups, I have a 3rd device that stays offline and starts once a day, just to update the replicated data . This makes it safer as it cuts the time window to just 30 min while it’s on.

That sounds like a great solution you’ve put together. Unfortunately, the technical knowledge required to pull it off is above the heads of most, hence the reason Synology exists and provides decent value proposition.

Agreed, there's always other solutions. However, his channel is geared mainly toward an audience with Synology Nas systems.

Inmutable snapshots can actually be deleted with ssh access, so what is said in this video is not completely true
