I know altitude above sea level is important because the higher you are the faster you have to land since air is thinner, so the runway needs to be longer

Edwards Air Force Base lists all runways on the lake bed as "official" including runway 17/35 which boasts a length of 39,097 ft × 900 ft (11,917 m × 274 m). If the space shuttle could land on it I think we gotta call it a runway. MERICA!!! LOL

It all comes down to the definition of runway... If you are talking only paved hard surface runways then this list, while seemingly lifted straight from Wikipedia, is mostly accurate. If as one poster we rely on FAA publications for US airports then there will be plenty of inaccuracies. With the exception of "published" approaches The FAA publishes airport information based on what the operator asks or tells them to. I can assure you that on internal FAA controller charts the all the runways at Edwards are published, as well as white sands. That being said, if we allow Edwards to count all their runways then 9 of the top ten are there, with the number 2 spot going to White Sand NM (35k). This would however make for a boring list, so one cannot blame the publisher from limiting the context.

The antonov can start and land with full capacity even at 3,8 km (2,3 miles). So 5,5 miles is way too long. Economicaly not too good. Only if its located on higher terrains, then you nedd longer runways

Because the altitude of the airport is 4500m above sea level. At this high you need much more speed to take off because the air is very thin.

17000 feet puts it ahead of all but 2 on the list. Edwards AFB has several runways that exceed these. Runway 4r/22l is 17841 paved and 27430 feet overall. Another unpaved runway is over 33000 feet long and 900 feet wide. NAS Fallon, NV is 16000 feet, which puts it ahead of most of the list.

KSSC is ~15,000' ; so not on here. Now the secondary landing facility at KEDW (the shuttle lands on the dirt runway too, and its permanent enough to have runway markings painted on it) is ~35,000'.
