Thank you so much for those who watched and to those who are watching or listening to it now. This was such a fun stream, one of the best I've ever been on. A great topic and great games also. And yes I agree, I need an outro for the end of the stream - I'll get working on that!! :P

Great video! I watched a little every night this week & finished this morning (the gift that keeps on giving😉) I've only played Viticulture, Mage Knight & Terraforming Mars from this video. I've played the Cave vs. Cave version of Caverna but not the original. I definitely agree with Viticulture & TM. I love Mage Knight, but I seldom could recount the story after playing, I'm just trying to survive. I want to play Anachrony, Agricola & Flamme Rouge eventually.

Luke that was one of your best collaboration videos so far. You have worked with some great creators, today was 👌. Knowing that Paul lives down the road as well is so cool!! I was so disappointed when it was cancelled initially as I was desperate to see Paul bring up Mage Knight 😂😂😂. You just talked about some heavy heavy games it was brilliant. Paul’s number one was a surprise but a great pic, your number one Luke wasn’t a surprise at all!! Thanks for the entertainment. FYI - My top three thematic Euros are Viticulture, Mage Knight and Robinson Crusoe. In my view theme doesn’t come stronger than RC. Cheers 🍻

This is a great stream, I will go as far to say superb! Brass is kinda thematic, no real problems there but I didn't feel it was a great game - I have only played Lancashire - so it wouldn't feature in my top 10. Terraforming Mars is fantastic, so immersive to me, this is a 9/10 for me. I only ever play it 2-player but we can throw all the expansions in and it takes ages but we love it! Totally understand the choice for flamme rouge. ... But flamme rouge or not. The best euros for me always had been the ones with few and sharp ruleset, but deep gameplay and strategy. One of these is also power grid. Lot of people state its fiddly and has lots of rules. Which I never understand. Yes there are management steps which have to be taken care of one person. And different payer setups. But the core playing rules are actually pretty simple. 1. Auction a plant 2. Buy resources 3. Buy cities 4. Use resources and make money + turn order structure, always last to first except for auction. Always loved the pace of the game that power grid establish, a little bit like flamme rouge. You have to somehow manage to stay with the Pack and find the right opportunity for your break away . .... Anyways. Good video from you guys

Power Grid is more fiddly because of the insane amount of math in it - AP is insane with people constantly having to recalculate to the penny what they need in a round. But I hate the game for other reasons! :P

@@TheBrokenMeeple I don't feel it so abstract. I'm a stage artist and I can understand how performance cards works. The only point here, as i see it, is that performed tricks takes the bonus from the workers location instead of the day that each trick is performed... 29:14 Question: Would you consider Dwellings of Eldervale to be a Euro? It has worker placement, resource management, area majority and card tableau (engine building) - which are all Euroey mechanics to me… But it also has dice-based combat - in which you are rolling the dice… Therefore, that is why I describe it as a “thematic Euro”, which is also the verbiage which you used in this video!

For a cycling game, I would have chosen Um Reifenbreite over Flamme Rouge. The main reason being that Um Reifenbreite actually has rules for allowing you to cheat. A rider can grab onto “the chase car” which makes their rolls better, but every time you do so, a card in drawn in secret to see if you were photographed cheating. At the end of the game you have to draw a certain amount of cards from the photo deck to see if you get disqualified. This is as thematic as it gets. I like to house rule that it is taking performance enhancing drugs, and seeing if you pass the drug test. But in the 70s when this game was designed holding onto a car may have been a bigger issue than PEDs.

If Agricola is less thematic because only one player can take the breeding action in no way is Terraforming Mars thematic. The card play is far less thematic than in Agricola, it is all about the effect. You can also win with doing no Terraforming. The most thematic thing is that you could probably Terraform Mars in the same time as the game length takes…

As much as Paul made it a point to include games that may not feature classic Euro mechanics or realistic themes or settings, I would have thought he would have included a game like Blood Rage or Scythe- which are (mostly) Euros with minis. I suppose you could omit Blood Rage since it's more of a hybrid since there is direct interaction with card combat, but why not Scythe?

@GamingRulesVideos

@@GamingRulesVideos I found your definition to be very helpful. I played Tidal Blades some weeks ago and might have referred to it as thematic (technically I thought "Ameritrash" but didn't say it out loud) but reflecting after this watch I wouldn't consider the actions in the game thematic by the same definition. At least not to the degree of those posited in the video. Thanks for sharing 😎

Spirit Island is such a freakin good game, I am convinced I will play my copy off and on for the rest of my life. Even if the designer/designers walked away right now and never did another expansion (I think they have at least one maybe two, they were collecting opinions/perspectives from indigenous peoples about doing a dahan expansion) fans would just start making unofficial expansions. Its that good of a game and that rich of a system.

I realllllyy hated Spirit Island, and I'm so glad I sold it off. Best decision I EVER made. I couldn't stand the extremely paralyzing brain-burniness of it. It just overcomplicates everything needlessly and unnecessarily. And this is coming from a heavy Euro gamer. Heavy Euros and Spirit Island have two totally different brain-burn levels, and the one that Spirit Island gives off is gross.
@tylerbrown9797
@tylerbrown9797 2 жыл бұрын
@@pauldicocco8850 sounds like the game was just too heavy for ya bro :P :P :P Nah, if you think its too brain burny for your taste you can easily adjust the difficulty in the game quite significantly and the manual actually gives a points rating system for how different tweaks will affect difficulty. It is accurate enough that when people discuss on forums about plays they had they frequently share the difficulty number they were playing at to give context. Again, fine not to like it but I just don't think calling it brain burny for no reason is really disengenous. Turn the difficulty down and it really isn't a hard game, and I don't say that as a humble brag. I am pretty mediocre at board games and am intimately familiar with losing and I don't think spirit island is hard at an easy difficulty and with events from branch and claw there is a comfortable uncertainty that encourages you to puzzle things out only so far. Yes... when you first play it feels IMPOSSIBLE and like you can't win but that is just the best way to tune co-op games. There is no AI in spirit island, it is just simple card based clockwork so if the whole game isn't pulled taught by an initial feeling of being overwhelmed than a lot of the steam tends to go out of the experience. Competitive games write their own stories with swings in players' fortunes but co-op games need a more imposed story arc and spirit island is fantastic at making you all of a sudden become a powerful badass spirit right at the moment you are about to get completely swamped (or should I say... deswamped).

Re : Brass Birmingham - The idea that Transporting Iron around on carts is thematic is silly. Promoters of this idea seem to ignore the fact that Railways need tons and tons of Iron for the entire infrastructure. Dobbin ain't gonna do it ! - Its just a different mechanic to complexify the game. And yes just like the concept of carted iron - complexify is made up. Not a bad game though

It's a game about wine that cares surprisingly little about the actual process of making wine, is how I'd put it. You can't age grapes like that. The planting limit you mention. You don't typically make blush by blending red/white wine. Needing larger cellars to store said blended wines. Wineless strategies. The list goes on. I'm not asking for a simulation by any means, but this is almost a fantasy of winemaking more than a reflection of it. It's an enjoyable game but has so many disconnects from its theme that I'm not sure I'd place it anywhere near a list like this.

@@TheBrokenMeeple Ok... I'll buy that it might be one of the hardest co-operative games to win. Defining "hardest"/"weight"/"complexity" is always hard (no pun intended). Is it how hard a game is to be good at? Is it the rules or how hard it is to play correctly? ... or is it how administratively hard it is to play?

Too much theme to be abstract. Input randomness, no output randomness, indirect player interaction, no player elimination, the designer’s name is on the box. It might not be what you think of as a euro because it’s not a traditional cube pusher or worker placement, but it’s definitely a euro.

Flamme Rouge is mechanically a deck builder - but it plays out differently, because you remove more than you add - and the cards you add are the bad ones which you don’t want to add.

As an engineer it always triggers me when people say Kanban is sooo thematic. The game is great, but it is as thematic as Wyrmspam. The only thematic game Lacerda ever put out was Vinhos, everything else are great euro games with nice themes. But they are just overproduced Stefan Feld games in a nutshell. It has nothing to do with real life car manufacturing. Exactly what Paul says, try to say a engineer for combustion engines to design the exterior design.
@TheBrokenMeeple
@TheBrokenMeeple 2 ай бұрын
I don't necessarily mean that if I took Kanban and applied it to real life I could build a car! :-) But the setting is relatable and the fundamental basics are there: design it, get the parts, build it, test it, those stages as summarised as they are, do at least make sense to the player. And cars are a familiar item to everyone as opposed to a fictional weather machine with government patents!

@@TheBrokenMeeple I understand that. And the process is well abstracted, but poorly implemented with that worker placement mechanic, that‘s the point where it doesn‘t make sense anymore - one worker, who works for all departments. You can argue it‘s some kind of product or process manager, but still it feels way off, even more when it comes to Sandra, who is watching you. It‘s ok, games can be abstraction of life, that‘s what games should be and it‘s fine. I love almost all Lacerda games as what they are: colorful Euro games in a ocean of brown ones. What bothers me are people who are hyping Lacerda and all of his games as extremely thematic games, they are not, by far not. They are just a bit more researched euros, that‘s all. Truely thematic games for me are Ground Floor or High Frontier for example. Last one that‘s where realism almost kills the ease of play, but that‘s how life is: chaotic and hard to master 🙂
