I traveled to Rome in 2010, and found this little video was immensely useful. I followed all her recommendations and had a wonderful time. I'm due to return...anytime now!!

I'm from Rome, you're totally right in everything. Before coming, study on internet where to eat and things to see. You see that a restaurant is touristic when you see specialities from many italian cities in the same place. If they have lasagne (bologna), caprese(naples), tortellini (romagna), gnocchi alla sorrentina (campania), it's usually a tourist trap. if you want to eat lasagne you gotta find an all bologna restaurant, and you eat good lasagne.

WARNING: Describing Italian drivers as "malleable" is dangerously understating the truth. Piracy would be closer to the truth, unless you are like the nun who craves for a quick death. Before you start walking, signal your intentions by sticking your arm out and wait till a car stops.

As a 19 year old white American male, I did a tour of Europe where I made it a point to have at least one fight in every country. I would only fight people who seemed to be average fighters for their country, not good and not bad so that my study could be objective. I had an especially difficult time starting a fight in Italy because noone wanted to fight back. I had to resort to spitting in a guy's face in order to get a reaction, but the fight only lasted for less than a minute before he said he was done. So I wouldn't recommend visiting Italy.
