Here is TRUE Venice on a budget: 1) DON'T stay in Venice! Instead stay in Maestre, on the mainland, somewhere a walking distance from the train station where there is a great selection of reasonably priced hotels. The ride to Venice is 1.25 euros. It takes 10-15 minutes to get to Venice with trains leaving every 10-20 minutes. And they operate until almost midnight, so no need to worry about spoiling your romantic evening. There is a sandwich shop at the train station that is great for picking up the energy you'll need to visit the city. 2) DON'T spend your money at the square. Instead select one of the many restaurants along the Grand Canal. The view is spectacular, quite romantic in fact, and the prices are reasonable. 10-15 per pasta dish and the view is awesome. (I had an authentic egg-drenched carbonara which was out of this world) 3) DON'T take the Gondolas! It's a rip-off. 80-100 euros just so you can say you rode the gondola. Instead save the money for the splendid churches and museums. At 3 euros a pop they're well worth it!! 4) In general, do as much walking as possible. The city is a joy to explore on foot, giving you a real sense of adventure. It's like a playground for adults, with tons of nooks and crannies. I can almost imagine designing a Monkey Island video game set in Venice. The only transport by boat you'll need is for the Judecca Island. 5) If you're in the warmer half of the year, it can get pretty hot. Buy a water bottle at the train station and refill it on one of the several public drinking fountains spread around the city. You'll save quite a bit of money this way. 6) Venice for all it's reputation is not that daunting when it comes to prices. It surely has the expensive stuff, but also it has what I call ''regular tourist prices'' for the average tourist. I've seen far far worse. In Venice you get great value for your money however much you chose to spend and I encourage everyone to come and visit it. It is one of my most highly regarded places I've visited of all time. Realistically you can find 70 euro per day accommodation in Maestre for two, and if you have roughly the same amount of spending money per day you should be more than comfortable.

"Mestre", or even better, go to Mogliano, it's a much nicer place than Mestre and it is well connected by train (20 minutes to Venice)

Well, sleeping in Mestre ( lived there 2 years ) is not the same as doing it here in Venice. I think a tourist should experience it, especially walking at night and then go to bed here and again waking up here. I think it's the price difference worth. Of course, everything gets more expensive around Piazza san Marco. Have a look on tripadvisor and then ask a local. Venice has a great selection of restaurants, many are good and not all are expensive. I don't like the idea of sitting in a gondola, but if someone like a slow ride in the canals, why not? 80 euro it' the price for 30 minutes, you decide if it's worth it. Yes walk all time and get lost!

Well, the thing about staying in Venice proper is that even if I could find a hotel in my budget range, finding somewhere to park my car would be a nightmare. I've looked and those Venice garages certainly aren't cheap. Since I arrived from Serbia by car, Mestre was a far more preferable choice, with plenty of parking space across the city. Serbs tend to overlook Venice, simply not on the radar, when in reality it's just a 7 hour drive from Belgrade, perfect for a weekend break. Despite having to take a train, we did plenty of walking through the city in nighttime and the atmosphere is simply amazing, just the right mix of calm and eeriness (those store windows filled with masks can be somewhat beautifully unnerving). Sure, if someone wants to ride a gondola, why not? But that person is definitely not a budget traveler.

1) Don’t stay in Venice if you are poor and have no taste. Instead, check sky scanner for the cheapest months to fly. The cheapest days of the month usually correspond with hotel prices. Also, try to rent an apartment if you can find one; preferably with a kitchen oven/stove. Better still, bring an electric stove as I will explain below. 2) The train station isn’t cheap. Sandwiches in there are not 1 or 2 euros. The cheapest sandwich is 1.95 Euros and is the size of a baby’s hand. However, the train station is where the true Gelato’s are. Fake Gelato is usually piled up and puffy because of air. True Gelato is fairly flat and there are two Gelato shops in the train station. Bring about 15 Euros for two el grande cones, each being around 5 to 6 Euros for 4 different scoops each. It may look pricey but the taste and experience is well worth it. 3)Take the Gondolas but haggle. Why? Venice is sinking and won’t be around forever. So go on the true gondolas if you have the chance. Besides, 80 Euros is not the fixed price and most drivers are willing to negotiate. 4) I agree with this but the problem with doing this throughout are other tourists. The place is packed full and the city never sleeps. The narrow alleys and paths don’t help either. My suggestion is that you buy the 24hr tickets. You don’t have to use them all up on the same day either. You can use it on any day for a total of 24 hours worth. So if you buy say today and you use 3 hrs worth, you still have 21 hrs worth for the next day. Also, there are two main ticket operators. One is Alilaguna and the other is Unic ( I will edit this with the proper names later). 5)Don’t buy water if that is the only thing you want. Bring an empty flask or bottle from your house instead, then fill it up in your hotel or guest rooms. People say that the fountains are fresh; fresh my ass! Just don’t risk it if you have another means of supply. 6)Venice is daunting when it comes to price. 15 Euros is already about £20 depending on the price you pay to exchange. Also, stay away from Saint Marks Square, the Rialto and anywhere there are loads of people when it comes to just snacking. Head for the outskirts or residential areas of the city if you want to eat out or if you have an apartment with a kitchen stove, then head for the COOP or SPAR for food and ingredients to cook. If you head out before 10am, the seafood markets are usually open by then and buying fresh seafood like sardines which are cheap as chips can cost as little as 3Euros for half a kilo and can feed 4 to 6 people. Do a weeks shopping if you are staying for 10 days. There are plenty of cafeterias and restaurants hiding about where prices are decent. Avoid fast food joints like KFC, BK and McDonalds. These places are a rip off! 7)Learn basic Italian. English is known in Venice but the locals prefer it if you can speak basic Italian. Knowing how to say Hello/Hi, please/thank you, can I have and where is and how much can go a very long way. 8)Have about 500 to 600 Euros money if you want to enjoy and experience everything. 9)Don’t buy masks in the main tourist areas, those are all fake and made in China. This goes for hats, Murano glass and Burano lace. Look for artisan mask sellers and you have to visit Murano and Burano for the authentic Glass and Lace. However, there are stalls in Murano and Burano that pretend to sell genuine glass; avoid these fakes. Get off at Colonia water bus stop on Murano and go inside the big shop to the right. They sell only genuine glass and have a factory on the island. Their glass also comes with certificates of authenticity for your own peace of mind. Once you’re ready for Burano, be prepared to que up for a very long time. If you leave for Murano early, around 6 or 8am, then you can avoid this huge line. We left late, so we had to stand there for over an hour just to get to Burano. This also applies if you are coming back from Burano to Venice. The lines at around 2pm on Burano are a joke. 10) it costs 25 Euros for an adult to go into the Doge’s palace and 9 Euros to go into the clock tower. The basilica is free but there are entrance fees inside for other parts of it. 11)Haggle, haggle and haggle! There’s nothing wrong with haggling and you will actually earn respect for it. We’re still in Venice right now and I’ve lost count when it comes to how many times I’ve haggled. :)

Venice on a budget? pro tip from a resident: be wary of bars and restaurants which are close to monuments, or nice views. Absolutely avoid restaurants offering "tourist menus" at fixed prices, they will rip you off with beverages and cover charge, and by the way most of them are not owned and run by Italian people. If you still want to venture in such a venue, always ask for the official price list, and never order anything which is not listed there. There are bars and restaurants where local people go and they won't rip you off there.

My tip as an Italian for foreigners coming to Venice: DON'T act like a tourist and you'll be fine. I know that it's easy to get excited when visiting a new country but if you're not careful you're going to spend all of your money very unwisely. Italy has been hit very hard by the economic crisis and if you don't know where to go they WILL try to screw you over, simply because tourist cities (Venice and Florence above all) are full of rich and spoiled tourists. Here are my tips: 1)Don't go to bars or restaurants near famous attractions (like St. Mark Square) because they ARE outrageously expensive. We Italians we call these places "tourists bars/restaurants" cause they are made to screw dumb tourists over. We Italians would never go to these places, and you shouldn't either. Look up cheap restaurants in Venice on Google. 2)Don't take a gondola ride if you can't split the cost 4 or 6 ways. 3)Find accommodation in Murano island, it's a lot less crowded and a LOT cheaper. 4)Don't be that guy that comes to Venice to spend all of his time in St. Mark square, go visit the rest of Venice and Murano island

I stayed seven nights in Venice, spending €400 for everything Including my return plane and coach ticket from Germany, Venice transport and museum passes 1)Accomodation I used a camp sites on the mainland:some have chalets , some have pools , most have well priced eateries.Mine provided a ready set up tent with airbed for €10per night, which included a restaurant, clean shower and a communal kitchen .2) Transport: 7 day travel pass, (on arrival at the airport), can be used for local buses to get in and out of Venice city , not just the Vaparetto. Local busses are very cheap, you can even get them from the airport but the staff at the airport kiosk misinform you for some reason and tell you you have to get an expensive coach...no, just find the bus-stop and pay the driver on the bus.3)Food There are food kiosks by the bus -central place on Venice island where you can , for example, buy a large and good spinach pastry with hot drink for €3.50 , do this and you wont need to eat again till the evening. Venice does have regular supermarkets dotted around the place, use your iphone to locate them and buy fruit, drinks and cereal bars etc 4) I went out of season so it wasnt so busy and the only Q was for the st marks basilica, which was only ten minutes. WHY? Because I love art, history and ancient places and I didnt let lack of money stop me from going...I found a way .I even bought some small souveneers and ate a lovely lunch on the grand canal out of my small budget.

I live in Venice and I have just a thing to say: too many tourists. Your tips are good, but also incentivize the flash tourism. And that is sad. I hope to see in the future much more tourist respecting and exploring every single brick of Venice.

Before booking a hotel on one of the other islands, keep in mind vaporetto's aren't cheap. Single-ride ticket costs 7.50 €. (It's valid for 75 minutes but usually you'll get to the final stop before that.) Now you can buy one valid for a longer time (24 hours for 20 €, 48 for 30, 3 days for 40 and a week for 60) and if you stay outside of the historic centre, you probably will. You may buy one if you stay on the main island (in case you want to visit Murano, Burano, Torcello, San Giorgio Magiore, Giudecca, or take a ride through Canal Grande) but you can get that done in 2 days and walk the rest, the city is small. (Also, this ticket is valid for pretty much anything except the airport... so you will have to buy tickets from and to the airport if you fly.) You need to factor that cost in the hotel price.

Judy got furious at a genuine mistake, that anyone could make, in a city notoriously difficult to navigate. Unreasonable at best.

Not really true to label, as 87 pounds per night for accommodation and 19 euro for a bellini at Harry's Bar is hardly budget. I enjoyed two weeks in Venice in 2017 and the most expensive item other than accommodation (an apartment which was more flexible than a hotel) was two seven day vaporetto passes which cost me 140 euro but which yielded over 250 euro in value based on the cost of a single trip ticket.

Walk or take the Vaporetto, there is absolutely no reason to take a water taxi or the bus. Get out of Venice during high tourist times and take a train to Verona or Milan.

*Best tip for visiting Venice on a budget: GO VISIT SOMETHING ELSE* As a matter of fact, Venice has far more visitors than it can handle/bear. You don't go to Dubai if you can't afford it and the same goes for Venice.
