I really enjoy that the architects of 2020's seem to be bringing the focus back on making visually appealing buildings, how the buildings makes us feel is just as important as any other aspect of architecture :)
@mushroomsteve
@mushroomsteve 2 ай бұрын
I totally noticed that! I love the harmony with nature of many of these buildings. It is a refreshing change from the old, sterile modern buildings from before that tried to be separate from nature. This new style is a new addition to the traditional architecture with ornate buildings with gargoyles on the sides, and the art deco style.

No surprise to any Torontonian that the construction schedule is lagging behind. Nothing gets built in Toronto on time, or on budget. The Eglington Crosstown Subway began construction in 2011 with a scheduled completion and operation by 2020. It's now 2024 and the builder, Metrolinx, will not provide an updated expected completion date. The project was originally budgeted at $11 billion dollars, but has currently reached $12.81 Billion dollars and it is now estimated to add $1 Billion dollars more, before completion.

Portland, Oregon, US here~ A supertall here? Ohthankyounothankyou! That's why we get all of our other buddies on the west coast to build those silly vanity projects. I'm totally on board with all the high tech thinking as well as design, but for what purpose? Its use is the justification to build so high they could screw up flight patterns. Y'all get the point, and I'm a "Git off my lawn" kinda guy. I'm already sick of this whole stacked block that might fall over motif. It is interesting and one or two in the world would suffice. Frank Gehry's work, however, is exciting! It's fresh, it is an incredible example of tomorrow which no other of these supertalls possess. The Chrystler Building, perhaps could be an analogy in this sense. Neither building needs what makes them beautiful, but to make something beautiful that is part of the building's functionality is what makes a modern building modern way after we are all dust. Great show! I love how you can make me excited about what we are doing now and how it will shape the future. It's heady stuff!

Commodore and the tower in Seattle are my favorites among these. BTW: "Monterey" (with one "r") is a mid-sized city in California. But "Monterrey" (with two "r"s) is the city in Mexico to which you referred. The problem is that you pronounced it like the city in California. Next time, ROLL THE R.

Because America is not the explicit name referring to the USA. However, it does imply North and South America. Another problem with that, however, is that Mexico is also part of North America. Regardless, his title is wrong, and it should be North America's future skyscrapers.

I don't think earth quake is the main reason. Its ultimately down to pricing power of land. Downtown LA is highly neglected - most rich live in the suburbs and like a typical sun belt city - LA is built for sprawl and cars - while cities New York Chicago and Toronto are downtown centric - where central business districts are thriving with businesses and residential living. Tell me who wants to live or visit downtown LA ? No one - hence no premium to pricing. LA downtown probably don't have 1/5 population of downtown Chicago.

It is designed as an insult to the station, one of the most iconic pieces of architecture in the US - or anywhere - no more. Combined with the existing superscraper directly to the west, it will belittle Grand Central Station to complete insignificance. It was the biggest station, with the highest train capacity, ever built including China. (though it's been castrated through removal of its storage yard in Mott Haven which is now completely blocked) The 30-story height of the buildings flanking the station was proportionally compatible with it, as was the Pan Am Building - especially with its 4 escalators giving access to the Main Concourse with dramatic flare. I think these developers badgered the Bloomberg Administration to get them to allow this. The Municipal Arts Society (who spearheaded the last battle over preserving Grand Central - for which we now have only an incompetently drawn bronze plaque of Jackie Kennedy in the Park Avenue vestibule.) and the local historic preservation outfit - are not worth their salt, and the preservation laws, including the federal one, have no teeth. i.e. THEY CAN DO ANYTHING THEY WANT. The existing new building directly to the station's west, One Vanderbilt Place or something, shows the station in an ugly aspect particularly from the west, where most tourists see it for the first time, and that's intentional. Part of the deal with the MTA was to provide $200,000,000 of improvements to the subway entrance at 42nd and Park S. The result was a historically accurate (though none existed before) marble clad stair WITH NO ESCALATORS whereas two of them currently exist across the hall which are inadequate and constantly breaking down. Doesn't look like $200,000,000 to me. In return, the MTA agreed to close the commodiously Guastavino vaulted taxi stand on Vanderbilt Avenue, so they could close the street to traffic - which resulted in making the taxi stand into a permanent latrine. They thought: "Maybe a Restaurant..." BUT NOBODY COULD STAND THE SMELL. Hence the taxis are lined up three lanes thick on 42nd Street and they had to put chain link restraints up on the sidewalk and hire people to direct both traffic and the noticeably aggressive taxi fares. Across the street the same developer had earlier dismantled Lincoln's seated statue in their ornate open entryway with an inspiring quote on its matching bronze plaque, and changed the name of the building from Lincoln to Two Vanderbilt or something. (no historical approvals required) You'd think the historic preservation authorities would have seen this as an ominous sign of what was coming, but no. Meanwhile, on the west side, another developer had agreed to fund the ill-conceived re-work of Penn Station - still in preliminary design as they've yet spent about a billion dollars on construction WITH NO APPRECIABLE BENEFIT - in fact quite the opposite. This agreement allowed the developer take down the Pennsylvania Hotel - something that should certainly have been landmarked, which they managed to keep out of Wikipedia for about ten years - and I'll bet he's sorry now. It was expected that he would fund the station by being allowed to demolish several notable 30-story buildings on Seventh Avenue - where the buildings are all thirty stories tall as far as the eye can see, giving the street a highly individual character probably not seen anywhere else in the world. But the MAS and Hist. Pres. Comm. would have no knowledge of that, because they're a bunch incompetent Useful Idiots and probably corrupt. It's questionable now whether the Pennsylvania Hotel Superscraper Replacement itself will be built, never mind the 8 or 10 other superscrapers that were intended to fund the station in lieu of taxes.
