teresa crespo hartendorf roamed Paramount Ranch Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest and produced a documentary of the people she talked with, the music she heard and the overall, wonderfulness of the annual music festival. This is the 2015 edition. tch productions, all rights reserved.

I started on the tenor banjo back in HS mid 60s Drove fr Tucson to the 1967 Contest when it was actually IN Topanga Canyon. David Lindley was the host announcer. This incredible 13 yr old fiddler blew everybody away with her rendition of "Mockingbird". Somewhere I have a reel to reel tape!

I have a Banjo. i have had it for years, i really would like to play it , but i never had the time to learn, now i do and can't find anyone to learn with. love the video. The older I get, the more I appreciate this music from my Oklahoma childhood. I now have another place to get to before it's oo late! I doubt that a linear presentation of the various categories and players would have been as enjoyable as this sort of freeform, variational joy fest.

wasn't quite how i thought my friday night would go, but i went with it, i ended up cutting the sleeves off an old cowboy shirt that didnt fit anymore, wore it over my t shirt, turned the volume up and got pissed, totally nice way to chillax after a hard week at work... ace !

Wish this was a more common atmosphere to find! I think we really lose more than we realise with the performer/audience dichotomy in our mainstream musical culture! Lessons to be learned from these wonderful people

Just love to see all the young musicians rubbing shoulders with inspirational older players. I live thousands of miles away but one day I would love to catch this event.

This is fun to see. Around 1974 I was vacationing and visiting a friend on the west coast (I'm a banjo player from Arkansas) and the friend took me to this festival. It featured John Hickman and Pat Cloud - great players. Also many fine old time players and some beautiful instruments.

I am a metal head typically but there is something about this music I love and have ever since I was a kid. Awesome musicianship and the fact they are keeping that style of music alive.

There's ALL KINDS of music going on around the world that we are not exposed to unless we seek it out, eh? You can hear bluegrass on the radio still, however.........this Contest and Documentary are awesome. Thank you !!

I play the banjo ,guitar,mandolin and harmonica,but being in another country i really miss getting together with other musicians and doing some classic americana ..country music. Love this contest.

2013-53rd Annual. I had a blast it so sad that we don't know if we'll ever another festival. I took alot of pictures so I can look back at good memories. Pictures and ticket .I saved this video too.since I lisen to bluegrass you tube put this on my phone for me .such a great time and cmmerrodery. Hopefully we can have more festival's in the future..

There is a very vibrant traditional music scene in California. Bluegrass, Cajun, Irish, Scottish, Blues, Jazz, you name it, we've got it. -jcr

Good to see again, thanks for sharing your video. I went as a youngster with Mary Ellen Clark, my guitar teacher and one of the founding board members with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Still going at 88 years young!

What I remember best about the festival was hearing Amazing Grace for the first time sung by a roomful of people. I'd never heard anything as beautifully amazing as that before in my young life. It helped point the way to a future where the Lord lives in my life.

20:23 Thank you son for restoring my faith in American youth. And then later... "I'm gonna go home and lay on the couch".....Exactly, when you are a kid that is your comfort zone! This is what Americana is all about. The "Roots", the "Folk" The heart of the real american culture immortalized in music and seeing it is still appreciated among the young.

I am metal head also and love the bass out sometimes. But good old bluegrass was the foundation and soal of all music. I love that music till this day. Is great to hear is still going strong.

JUST GREAT! I enjoy very much to listening this good music. I'm from Switzerland where we unfortunately don't have such nice contests. Our young people unfortunately going more to Hard Rock or even Heavy Metal that I don't like at all.

Congratulations on making this. It could have been an earnest coverage of the competition; instead, we are treated to a lively and thoughtful coverage of the event itself. So great to see young and old showing that this music continues to thrive in a spirit of community.

I was involved in the video production and we actually got "two, two, two mints in one!"-- musicians offering the results of months and months of practice, hoping to win a prize and send the link across the world to wherever friends and relatives are waiting. Then, the pressure's off and the fun begins. Much thanks to teresa crespo hartendorf for capturing all the fun. I'm watching this anew from a hospital bed, five years on and just keeps getting better!
