Some laser range finding don't use pulses, they use continuously modulated intensities, and just compare the phase differences using RF phase detectors, as semiconductor lasers usually have very high modulation bandwidths. I would love to see a revisits of the IR seeker head, I am confident in helping you getting it running. It uses conical scanning and a non cooled PbS detector, so should be very easy to operate on the lab bench.

How to tribrach: First, 'zero' the screws. They have a mark on the tube that shows when the screw is at the centre of its movement range. Now, pick two screws and operate them as a pair, always operating them with both hands, one screw in each hand, and always turning the screw in your left hand in the opposite direction but same distance as the screw in your right hand. The third screw is operated independently. This establishes an X axis (the paired screws) and a Y axis (the independent screw). By moving the X screws as a 'differential pair,' the height of the tribrach doesn't change, so the bubble only moves left-to-right, the independent screw is used to move the bubble front-to-back. This technique is even more helpful when working with the sensitive plate level.
