I remember the first time I blew up Megaton (first play through) I had no idea Tenpenny was even there. The mushroom cloud went up then suddenly I hear “Good show!” Total jump scare and it really made the entire thing seem so much more ominous.

I really think it should have doomed the waters of life quest. Kinda like Morrowind when you kill that Blade Cassius. The game prompts you: "With this character's death, the thread of prophecy is severed." You can continue in your own doomed world.

If you have Broken Steel and complete the Holy Water quest, Mother Curie and Brother Gerard will be effected if you blow up Megaton afterwards. Curie turns into a hostile ghoul reaver while Gerard had some dialogue but will stand and pray by the ruins.

Well to be fair, the radioactive half life of the materials in a nuke are pretty low. So after 200 years of sitting there, there’s probably a lot less fissile material left. In all honesty it’s a miracle there’s enough left to even go critical.

It completely depends on that weapon's yield. Some nuclear weapons aren't very powerful. The weakest ones are comparable to strong conventional bombs.

I remember waaay back in the day when they released a gameplay trailer for this. The guy pick pocketed someone and put a live grenade in their inventory. Then they showed a bit of this megaton scenario where you had to make a decision and they said that decision would highly affect the game. I was soooo hooked after that. Being able to create your own story and world is just so crucial for a good gaming experience.

Casual reminder that megaton is effectively a bandit resthome. The doctor is a slaver from paradise falls, people like jericho are a dime-a-dozen - hell, just look at Moriarty's computer. He hires you as a hitman if you ask him for work. The guy working at the food shop downstairs is a jet dealer. The point is that it's basically one of the nastiest places in the waste, and that's why it gets left alone.

Eh, there's a lot worse. Thier deaths were painless and instant. There's things you do in WoW for s simple side quest that are worse murder a town and plant flags in their corpses for example. You can't even kill kids, which Fallout 2 lets you do. Those damn kids were still just running around in the crater going AHH help! because they are immune to all.

You’re right though. It’s bad world building on Bethesda’s part. They have little protection, yet the slavers haven’t attacked them yet, despite being possibly the biggest target. On top of that, they have no reason to be rich or snobby. They haven’t built wealth off of anything.

You don't go blind from looking at an exploding nuclear bomb, numbskull. You get blinded. Do you understand the difference? The latter means you won't be able to see, the former means you lose your vision - permanently. The radiation also doesn't spread that far.

Saved my game then chose to blow up megaton… my 13 year old self couldn’t live with my horrible decision so I went back to my save point and righted my wrongs. I was totally immersed in this world, I’m 28 and don’t even play video games anymore but I’ll never forget just how special this game was to me.

realistically, most likely. But in Fallout 3's ridiculous world? probably not.

Realistically there would not be a single window left in the tower after an explosion like that. Also, most likely everyone who looked straight at it would go blind immediately. After a couple of days the tower (and the surrounding area) are going to be covered in radioactive dust, causing radiation levels to skyrocket and many people to get mutations/cancer. In short, yeah they would be fucked completely, which IMO adds to the insanity and irresponsibility of this choice.

Ok but here the scary thing, imagine this, your a wastelander who has been living your entire life not really knowing what got humanity to that point or what a nuke going off looks like, and then while walking out of Washington you see a sudden bright light on the horizon and see a mushroom cloud go into the sky. You probably not move due to the shock of every happening
