Vega has always been my favorite character, but I never knew he had such a sad origin; always figured he was just narcissistic all on his own rather than having a Freudian reason hating ugly people. Very interesting. Additionally, thank you for skipping his involvement in the live-action Chun Li movie. The less said about that movie, the better.

I loved to play as Vega in the games where he was selectable. But as a boss in the original SF2, he was WAY OP. He could hold out his jump kicks like a light kick, but when they connected they would do the damage of a hard kick.

Vega in the animated street fighter movie certainly captured his overall character, being fond of how beautiful Chun Li was but also having no problem in eliminating her for master bison. Plus with how he loses it when Chun Li damaged his face in which made him most upset, playing into his extremely vain personality traits.

Man those Street Fighter 2 battles at the local arcade were the best! It was always that one guy you couldn't get off the game! He would destroy every challenger who dared to put quarters in the Machine 😄

This is a fascinating character. Origin, design, and the name game. Playing SF2 on an arcade cabinet was a surreal experience. And at home, it was unreal. The SF2 animated film branched out that dark side. Plus the unforgettable vs Chun Li fight in her apartment. That scene was incredible. SF2V was interesting. Definitely took different paths, but a fun one. Seeing where his path lead to.. still a formidable character. In the Alpha / Zero series, I could not forget his interaction with other fighters, especially saving Cammy. But also looking out for others.. so he had a heart. Which was fascinating to see Since Alpha, IV and V felt like he was keeping an eye out. Yet wasn't the same baddie from SF2. Still intimidating, but for a reason. I never played SF EX, but it's neat to see how far he's come. Excellent coverage of this amazing character

Vega was the very first Street Fighter Character I chose in an arcade machine in a now defunct Bronx New York pizzeria as a child, I fought Zangief & he kicked my tail but I couldn't resist how cool vega looked wearing that mask & claw.

During the World Warrior tournament (Street Fighter II), Zangief considered Vega his rival in a sense, as the two of them had clashing ideas over the image of the perfect man. Vega naturally considered pretty boys like himself the ideal, whereas Zangief believed men should have big, strong, powerful bodies, like himself. Zangief kept a photo of Vega with the word "baka" (Japanese for "idiot") written on it, to show contempt for his target. Many "fans" (more like trolls) instead took (distorted) this as proof that Zangief was gay, specifically gay for Vega.

@Kurapika Giovanna More likely it's because of the overused trope of tsundere anime characters saying "Baka, it's not I like you or anything", or something to that effect, to hide their affection for someone. Some people must have assumed (or wanted to push the joke) that Zangief was being a tsundere towards Vega, instead of simply flat-out disliking him.

The match between Blanka and Vega at the 7-11 was a favorite pastime for myself and someone with initials SKY. It seemed that we would balance out the win/lose and considered him an equally skilled player. Keep in mind this was a small rural town and most players I came across were much less skilled than SKY; I used to play the SF with pressure sensitive buttons in Toronto in 1989 and have much more experience than most. After I watched the Blanka history a few days ago started to search for Vega but not available. Now today I see you released Vega's history. Thanks TopHat for pairing these two character histories in succession. Subscribed.

Man. Love these episodes! Been playing SF since 94 but have never taken that deep dive into learning all this backstory of each character. Vega is a favorite of mine but I didn't know about why he has such hatred towards ugly people or the death of his mother by his ugly step dad.

He will always just be Vega to me, Balrog is one of those legendary _"Come down and test drive a new Toyota Kluger, it outperforms competing 4wheeler Mitsubishi Pejorative!"_ Japanese naming moments. Balrog is slightly better for a boxer, but all i can think is Demon from some fantasy series.

I thought the fight scene in the sf2 animated movie was mostly memorable because of the creativeness and excitement and touches of realism in the fight scene scored by an Alice & chains song, but besides the fact that Chun-li was fighting in her underwear and Vega was trying to rape and kill her. Chun tiddeez is a great perk, but seems like the least of all these things

In his own stage (snes) hoald down for 2 seconds then press up and the r button.. he climbs the fenses and later jumps down. The move that the computer uses when he is mid or low on helth as a boss character

I played the Japanese version of the game on the Super Famicom. When SFII Turbo was released I bought the SNES version the first day it was available and was to surprised to see 3 of the bosses names switched around. At first I didn’t know why that was and it irritated me....but I figured it out later on my own because it made sense. Still don’t like it though.

I remember when SF2 come, and it took the arcades by storm. Everything and anything was new. People with more coins were able to try to beat the game, and Vega was a gatekeeper, because of his agility and attacks that did not follow any of the patterns experienced with the other fighters. Since he was more agile than you, your instinct was to block, but you would get a Barcelona drop in no time. I remember a young boy finally saying "you must stop being defensive". A boy I was chatting said "this game is something else, it is the best we have this season".
