Capturing Sound with the Panasonic AG-DVX200

A video blog with information about the Panasonic DVX200
and other sound accessories to use with this fantastic camera.
While I mention two ways I get omni-directional sound from a connected Lav Mic and a highly directional shotgun microphone. I also neglected that the DVX200 has a Dolby Digital built in stereo mic. When you want to capture more ambient but somewhat directional sound. So I can switch between these three sources at any point in time to capture exactly what kind of sound source I need at any given time. I neglected to cover the side panel controls for switching between these mics but I wanted to highlight how you can create a very light simple rig that can do a lot of things with recording good sound. I apologize for not using a microphone at the time. Oh well its clear at least.
Using:
Sennheisser ME66 shotgun and K6 preamp, & 3 foot Coiled XLR Cable
Sennheisser G3 ENG ew100 Kit, H4N Zoom and HD280 Pro Headphones
Beringer C3 Studio Microphone
Shot with Sony FDR-AX100, built in mic. meh

Chris. You are the first person to talk about sound quality which is refreshing. Many folks new to the video scene are still struggling with the camera never mind the audio. I took down some notes on the gear you recommended. It certainly is pricey :( Thank you very much for taking the time. Often when you are talking into a camera on a tripod, you have no idea the people the movie will reach nor the effect it will have. My knowledge of audio is very limited so this was helpful.

+Martin J.Galloway thanks I am glad I could help. Please relate your experience with the camera or what system you use. I love the VLog off the DVX200. Yes, we need to learn this camera first before we run out to shoot with it.

This camera is not meant to be solely used with the on-board mic. Use the two extra XLR's inputs. Use a shotgun and a lapel mic or boom mic.

You talked about good Audio Quality yet you don't have a mic on yourself during the entire video since this video is suppose to be speaking about good Audio i would have expected the Sound to be good not through a shotgun or what was being used you have the best audio equipment but yet you did not use any of them for the video How come?

When you talked about not leaving mics on the ground, I instantly thought about when I lost my lavalier in the grass a few months ago! Luckily it ended up working properly afterward. Impressive about that lithium battery life. Also spot on about the used price of the H4n. I bought mine on eBay for $250. What camera do you shoot your vlogs with?

Do you get clean sound through the Sennheiser G3 transmitter/receiver. I have a G4 series and I always get a slight audio issue that I have to fix in post. Is there anything you changed in the DVX200 settings to clean up the sound?

Hello Christopher, I know the world of photo and video notions. I hesitate for weeks between two models. AG-UX180 and AG-DVX200. I consider buying Tescam DR-701D and Sennheiser ME66 - K6 Shotgun Mic Kit. With an Atomos recorder later. But choosing the camera is very difficult for me. An AG-DVX200 large sensor zome 13x or AG-UX180 sensor 1 inch zome 20x devoid of the system V-log L which seems to me interesting. The choice is really complicated. I would like to know your opinion?

Hello, Cristhoper, thank your for your helpful video. I also have a DVX200 camcorder and a question for you. When I am recording and I have the headphone plugged, I think I only listen the stereo mix audio. Is this the only option to listen the sound or can I select channel 1 or channel 2 independently? In my old Sony EA50 I could set the sound to output to the headphone set to stereo (outputs is stereo) or set to mono (outputs in monoaural). Can I do the same with the DVX 200? Or maybe is better to connect the headphone to the Audio Output, not recomended option in the manual of the camera? Thank you very much.

Hello, I can't find in the menu how to monitor CH1 only, CH2 only, or CH1 + CH2. Please can you help?

You should have used the mic on the table for this shoot , especially if you are talking about good audio. Just saying..... you did apologize.

Can you connect a stereo mic to this camera? Stereo xlr or 3.5mm? I don't see in the specs it has the port for 3.5mm.

I have the dvx200 and the Sennheiser shotgun mic in your video. I found that I am picking up a noticeable background hiss. Are you getting the same thing, and what do you do to minimize this.

I use the Sennheiser ME 66 and K6 and the MKE 600 features a switchable low cut filter above the power switch. Make sure you have it turned on to cut the problematic hiss. Cheers.

Please make sure you are not using Phantom power on a powered Mic.
