Today, January 10, 2021, we celebrate David Bowie's birthday. The pop legend who died on January 10, 2016, would have turned 74 today. That's why we honour him on our home page with his most famous Toppop recording made back in March 1974.
David Robert Jones OAL (8 January 1947 - 10 January 2016), known professionally as David Bowie, was an English singer-songwriter and actor. A leading figure in the music industry, Bowie is regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. He was acclaimed by critics and musicians, particularly for his innovative work during the 1970s. His career was marked by reinvention and visual presentation, and his music and stagecraft had a significant impact on popular music.
During his lifetime, his record sales, estimated at over 100 million records worldwide, made him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. In the UK, he was awarded ten platinum, eleven gold and eight silver album certifications, and released 11 number-one albums. In the US, he received five platinum and nine gold certifications. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Rolling Stone named him among the greatest artists in history and - after his death - the "greatest rock star ever".
This is the famous video of David Bowie recorded in the TopPop studios in Hilversum the Netherlands, under the direction of Rien van Wijk.
It was broadcast on 4 March 1974. Davis selected this video himself for the DVD 'Best of Bowie' (2004) as he really liked this recording. It was a big hit in the UK (#5) and the Netherlands (#8).
On the same day David did a press conference in the Amstel Hotel in Amsterdam where he received an Edison award for 'Hunky Dory'

Fun fact: The eye patch was from a pirate custom that one of the people working on the program had used a few days prior, Bowie used it to cover an inflammation of his eye, the guitar was just a random guitar that was laying around and just happened to be red and matched perfectly with Bowie's outfit. It's all just a entire coincidence that it all matches. This was told by Ad Visser the host, about 2 weeks ago on Dutch television.

The eye patch means you can't really see what is going on, it is occult and used by quite a few (Fake Brian Ferry) It was all an act, which is what he told a DJ that worked in Stringfellows that told me. I love the music but it was all part of the gender bender agenda and basically to get us to where we are now!!! It's a trick to make you see wide, it can almost break your heart..in pieces..

As to playing “with” the guitar rather than actually playing it is genius. He knows we are going to know it’s a lip sync. The smaller picture of him in the right corner is supposed to represent the correct way to sing the song. He sang this in a studio because the correct lyrics of, “you want to be dead when they count up the dues” was on the album’s liner notes. Follows the line about the handful of ludes, short for Qualudes which were taken off the market. However, today on the web they report the lyric as being “ you wanna be there when they count up the dudes.”

Lots of artists did that as a protest at having to mime, here’s The Stranglers, they were hilarious, particularly the drummer who ended up playing air drums with his back to the drums. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rs2qd7SovN_LcZc.html The police also did one which was just as funny.

Absolutely unreal. Nearly 50 years ago, Bowie was not only making unbelievable music but challenging gender norms. That is insane courage. Plus, over the years, he kept experimenting with different genres of music. Plus, he looked great while pulling it off. Unbelievable !!!

Bowie was naturally different . He in no way tried to be different to be cool . He was one of the most creative song writers , composers , recruiter of talent to play and work with in composing and arranging music for recordings and for his live bands , open to all kinds of musical influences : bowie in sum total : one of the all around greatest artists in rock history . He also supported unknown talented rock bands and musicians , which gave them a lift up the ladder to success .
