Matthew, you nailed it, but didn't elaborate on why, which is the most important understanding here I feel. We are good at COD and Halo. Why? Most Americans, whether you like it or not - are more into FPS games over some RTS (SC) or FGs, in general. Hell, an average school gaming night can tell you that much, except for maybe a party game FG, like SMASH. But what of games a lot of Americans actually love? No nation in the world is close to beating us at Basketball, nor would they anytime soon. Baseball isn't quite as much of a lock as it used to be, but also pretty damn good overall. I wish Afootball was international... It would largely be the same. What do all of these have in common? They actually have tens of thousands of Americans, if not more constantly working at becoming great at it. Like how you have whole groups of Koreans practicing at Starcraft. We don't have that SC culture here. Hell, just in classic free BW, I can see the American servers at their best usually have about 1.2k + 400 (not usually) - vs an averaging >30k players on Kor server. Can you really tell me it yields an unexpected result of mostly Korean domination? I can't. I expect with greater competition and refinement within a bigger pool, you should have an average of better people at the top of it. A lot of nations have their niche, and things that have become very refined in certain regions, from physical sports, even to the e-leagues.
