I have invested a lot of hours with Clay. Taken notes. Practiced on the range and the course. Watched the videos over and over and over. It is working. The lessons have improved my game and understanding unlike the many hours of in person lessons I have had with golf pros. They just cant compete with this type of teaching.... that I go back to go over and learn something new every time. You cant consume it all in one viewing, at least I cant. Thanks Clay

Just turned 50 and learning to play again after 25 years of NOT playing. Thanks for the valuable instruction. I'm posting this comment because your tips worked. No more slice on my day two of the range, my first range day (which was a disaster) :) I am confident hitting the other clubs by allowing my body to turn into the shot. It was just that easy. Thanks Clay !!!

Hi Clay, I've been watching your videos and practicing hard for a few weeks now. I've played golf for over 20 years, and have only broken 90 a few times. All I can say is that I wish I knew then what I know now. You answer all the questions that I had when taking lessons, but they could never answer, they would just stick a towel under my armpit or something stupid like that. You are an incredible instructor, and I'm hitting the ball better than I ever have, and I feel like I could go out and break 90 with ease. I would love to take one-on-one lessons with you some time, so if you ever offer this, please let me know. Have clubs, will travel. Tom Carter , Charleston, SC

Thanks Clay this idea worked awesome. I am a 3 Handicap golfer and this concept kept my mind clear and my swing free, by releasing down the line. I focused only on swinging down this line and was able to hit straight and long (added yards to both driver and irons). Also of note shots were more centered and solid and I thoroughly enjoyed the game. I look forward to getting out to the course to repeat. Cheers :)

Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard I want to subscribe to your site where I can have access to all your videos. I played this morning, 30 degrees when I teed off. Had a terrible score of 47 on the front. On the back I shot a 38. I’m 67 with over 70 surgeries in 12 years. Just started playing again last year after 12 years of unbearable pain due to 9 bulging discs in my back and 8 surgeries on my right knee that included 3 total knee replacements. Was in a wheel chair not being able to walk any distance due to pain. I prayed and asked God to heal my knee in 2018. Three weeks later I got out of bed and was healed. I now can play gold again without severe pain. I had a 7 handicap when I had to quite golf in 2008. I want to get my golf game back where I shoot in the seventies again. I tried rotary swing for over an year, and it did not help me. Also interested in private lessons if you are in driving distance. Thanks!

Clay, your TSG website has helped me go from a consistent slice at 235-255yds, to a consistent draw/straight drive between 270-300yds ... unreal gains from only doing level 1 stuff and about half of the quick distance fix. You seem pretty active on youtube so I wanted to ask here if you could put up a video on the TSG website for people like me who live in places with intense winters who want to do a series of indoor exercises in the off season to continue to build strength/mobility/muscle-memory/etc -- I have been putting together a routine in a spreadsheet but it feels incomplete and probably not in the optimal order.

thanks for the advice Clay, will see how it goes this afternoon. i like your slow motion views.. would have been good to show the fade and draw slow motion at the same time... i watched them both back and noticed that you had a higher attack on the fade and drew your club behind your around neck level while your draw was around the right hand should/bicep on your back swing (as you would expect)... i struggle to find the right angle behind me on the back swing, but i think this video helped. my shots are fade, slice, straight or hook (in that order of likelyhood)... the draw eludes me!

Darrell klassen does this with a power point in front of the ball pointing the toe of club at a point. you can fix slices and hooks that way . It changes your impact position of your club without changing to much of your swing .

Another quality video with great tips & drills. You cover virtually every aspect of the game, but I can’t find one on using irons off the tee. Be good to see a video on this or some tips - should it be similar to a driver (hitting up) or like a standard iron (descending) strike ?

Clay, I watch many many of your videos and put it to practice on the range. I have 1 request. The word RELEASE. What other word besides 'release' can you use to explain how to swing. I don't know what release means when you say 'release the club in front of the golf ball'. To me, release means 'letting go', as when you throw a baseball or football, you release (let go of) the ball at a certain point of your throwing motion. Since I'm not letting go of the club, what do you mean when you say 'release'? Thanks.
@guessmyname1104
@guessmyname1104 4 жыл бұрын
My 2 cents: release = unhinge. Don't tense your forearms and try to hold a specific wrist angle. Just let the momentum of your downswing naturally unhinge(release) your wrists.
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. You're exactly right. It can be confusing and I think some instructors have different definitions of it too which makes it more confusing. It's a similar concept to what you're saying letting go of a ball. It's when all the angles are gone and the club is splitting the forearms. If you look at the thumbnail, you'll see an image of the release. Ideally, it would be about 45 degrees out in front of impact. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Clay Thanks for your instructional videos helping us golfers;enjoyable to watch learn and practice. I'm just getting back into playing again after a long lay off.I watched your video on hitting the ball 1st with you irons weight transfer and you said most pros load the right foot max first for the weight transfer to the left foot on impact but can you tell me when using the driver while tilting your spine right for a right hand golfer the weight transfer with the driver.I cannot seem to stay back and hit up on the driver consistently.Would it make sense then to load my left foot so at impact the weight transfers more to my right opposite of hitting the irons like you mentioned. I'm fighting the dreaded driver closed face loose loft left duck hook and get very muscle to the ball-DeX
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dexter, the technique is not different for the driver. You can widen your stance some to make it easier to hit up on it. It sounds like you're just hitting it low off the toe but it's impossible for me to know without seeing your swing. Spray some foot powder on the face and see where you're striking the ball typically. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Great video Clay. But you forgot to mention the position of your left arm and hand when you demonstrated the slice move. This is where I struggle. Looking forward to trying this. For some reason I can draw and fade irons but get on the tee and slice or if I set up for draw it's just a straight push or sometimes and over hook. I think working on over drawing and over slicing in one session and finding middle ground could help correct when I'm on course. Do you suggest keeping the path relatively the same and just adjusting aim/setup right or left or should I consciously swing more right or left for draw/fade?
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bryan, It sounds like you may have been swinging too much in to out before. Hitting extremes slices and hooks can help you find that middle ground for sure. As far as the way you're doing it, that's up to you. You have to find what works best for you. There are many ways to do it. The only thing that needs to happen is the face needs to be closed to your club path. Try those ways of doing it and find what works best for you. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Great video!! Do you change your feet placement when doing these drills - do you keep your feet square to your target line? Or does a person need to adjust the lead foot to back little for fade and forward a little for draw (compared to target line)?

Hi, you're in luck. We have that video on our KZfaq channel. Do a quick search on our channel for "driver iron" and it should pop up. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

On the pretty good straight shot at 16:25, your monitor indicated your path was 1.3 degrees left but your face to path was 1.6 left as well. The ball should had a baby draw but it was depicted as a baby fade. Since there was no significant wind affecting ball flight why did that happen?

Let's say I hit a few nice shots that split the fairway but I'm trying to hit a draw and instead hit a slight fade. Is that something to be concerned about?

Hi Glenn, it sounds like you may need to work on getting more awareness of your face and path. I would practice alternating hitting fades and draws on the range to get a better feel. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Clay does not get hung up on it all being about the lower body. That's great if you are 25 and have D1 ability. Seems to me modern golf instruction is sadly geared for like 1/10th of 1% of the population. Clay and Adam Balzelgette are two guys who can teach to the middle of the class thank goodness.

I’m so confused. The club is closed on the release. And then it’s open on the release. How do you do that if your just letting the club swing freely ?
@TopSpeedGolf

It only matters if it's opened or closed at impact. Some will roll it over more in the release like Rory and some with keep it more square like Koepka. Neither are wrong. You do what works best for you. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

HE is very good and clear but his driver Swing mechanic is weak in my view. His foot work does not allow his right elbow to be in place where it needs as the club head comes to the ball. I divid the driver swing into three areas of development from ground up. The three areas starts with lower body compose of hip setup and feet setup toes pointing direction and placement to create a close stance. Second area is upper body composed of spine, shoulders placement and arms action. The goal of upper body is to have the right elbow close to the body and he does good job. He is very athletic and can adjust his body to bring the club head to the ball but he comes up on his heels to do it that is poor swing mechanics in my view. The best model for driver swing mechanics is Ben Hogan driver swing mechanics. The third ares of develop is hands starting with wrist and then fingers for grip affects hands abilities for I call it finger ergonomics. Each finger pressure affects hands action to the club head. IF go to his video and look at the slow motion action of his swing for its starts at 3 minutes. The goal is Right elbow being place just so during club head coming to the ball. The elbow should be bent as the club head comes through the ball. That requires the shoulders be be at angle where the right shoulder is low and right up but not straight that is weak. IF you watch his foot work and the right elbow and look at his heel coming up and down go allows the right elbow to come through during the swing.It is very fast and short but it has to be because his good placement does not allow the right elbow to flow through front of the body. Many golfer have the elbow away from the body he does not for right. HOW to keep your heels down on the ground and allow the elbow flows across your from of the body during the swing but also allows the shoulder tilt is increased base on foot stances. Ben Hogan has FOOT placement for each club so the right elbow can be bent and flow across the front of the body as club head comes to the ball. With a close stances where the right foot is back about 2 to 3 inches back (it can be greater and golfer has find how far to bring the right foot back) for the drive swing. How much depends and golf body size and arm characteristics affects the foot placement is close stands. IF you look at Ben Hogan book the Five lesson and find his foot work placement for each club. Understand the goal is for the right elbow ability for each club to be close to side of the body as club head comes to the ball. Why bent elbow so the wrist and hand action can be more dynamic to have lag time of the club head to be shorter. Some golfers have their right elbow straight about 3 feet before the club head strikes the ball that limits all hand dynamics force. Here is another point and see his left shoulder being up during club head strike the ball. As right elbow extends the left shoulder comes lower or straighter. Make the close stance and move slowly and realize how the right elbow can come through without having the heels coming up jump up during the swing. Watch Ben Hogan swing the driver and his heels do not come up and right elbow is always in the same place for repeatable drive swing. IF you watch his use of other clubs his right elbow comes through the same way. The other point is the left knee action can be enhanced. The driver swing is 100 percent physical so swing mechanics for the drive is the only repeatable swing action. Suggestion Find exercises to shape your body range so the drive swing mechanics you choice can be repeated. Drive swing is the done physically the say way each time is the goal. Nice video very clear but the driver swing mechanics should be easier and flow better but heel jump makes more effort in the swing for produce less ground force during the swing. Ben Hoban never jump in his driver swing in fact his feet was very grounded which made his hip turning better. That is my view for true Ben Hogan swing mechanic support for the most dynamic form to swing clubs. Have good day and good swings.

@@cryptomaniac2 Thank you. I am a physical trainer rooted Qi Gong training I apply to sports physical mechanics movement. On golf understanding Ben Hogan book 5 lessons was my seed to construct golf swing exercises with the different club driver being the most physical is good one to start learning the golf swing. I had driver swing class for 3 years in a gym setting to construct driver swing sensations mechanics as you engage core energy and strength Timed with core breathing in the swing. Ben Hogan book has two drawings that shows internal and external movement of swing. The first drawing shows internal energy flow and two points of focus which are core generator for energy and strength and the head generator which I explain is an Attitude generator directing energy sensation flow into club swing. The other drawing two main points are selective muscles during the swing making firm and soft in movement. I train people in the guy doing slow movement to sensitize muscle awareness at points in the swing so the student can make adjustments and mind can have time to realizes differences and effects.. My Qi Gong training covers lot of sports for performs in focus on. I am not a PGA instructor but worked with very good one for clarity of my approach I develop clarity of swing no other have given by Qi Gong back ground. I do have KZfaq views on Ben Hogan book two drawing and what do they mean for understanding. The golf swing is complex and is opposite to sports physical for strength is not the main force in the golf swing. The club is tool to hit the ball and it has to be done artfully. I have a number of You Tube videos on how exercise to swing the driver from the ground up. I have some on putting people like base on open stances foot work for a Pendulum putter head movement also core breathing to effect your emotional physical state. Being a Trainer in Qi Gong and I am master of energy movement which is person effect. I have applied my knowledge into sports. Golf is great physical sport. In golf softness and flow with a snap of hands is very challenging state between mind and body coordinated with each selective club that has different foot placement to be affective. Golf is the most complex sport given the range of clubs and physically since swing mechanics is key not strength by it self. With my PGA friend we produce 5 articles in golf magazines and one I really enjoyed is explaining the Two drawing in Ben Hogan book and I do have that one on KZfaq. If you want to become more attached to a club you have exercise with it NOT on course but in a gym type setting so you can develop a high sensory sensations of club Swing mechanics range and foot work affects right elbow placement and bend. I like low effort with hight effect is what golf swing is about. Thanks for what you said. PS Look for Driver swing mechanics with Qi energy on You Tube and another one is Driver swing mechanics with Qi energy. Ben Hogans head attitude generator define. I do have number of he golf swing from energy physical sensation development approach. What make me different I add internal force and shape of the body for the golf swing and sport. Golf is great exercises if make it such. Have good day.
