Mamasa is West Sulawesi is a rarely visited regency in Indonesia but shares a unique culture with Toraja, however it’s a little bit different as we find out.
Join me on today’s episode where we ride on the Honda CB500x (Raven) through the island of Sulawesi and stop by in Mamasa.
We are blown away by the kindness and generosity of the local people who are keen to show us around. We visit some ancient sites and traditional villages such as Taupe and Balla Bale Banua and Balla Tedong-Tedong. I even wear some traditional clothes. We also see the women hand weaving Tenun in the traditional way.
We visit the house of the Bupati, Obednego Depparinding who died and his special coffin is awaiting burial. Which will be one of the largest funerals (Rambu solo) in mamasa regency.
The roads are terrible in mamasa and especially the road (jalan poros Torja mamasa) which is the road linking Toraja and Mamasa. It is a trans national highway but is largely unsurfaced and just big broken rocks with the lots of ruts. It’s a terrifying experience and the road is very steep.
Please enjoy this episode and don’t forget to like and subscribe. You can also follow me on instagram

Why did he feel sad seeing palm oil plantations? Did he expect we cook using olive oil all the time? I swear these mat salehs are so judging thinking they are always right every time.

It’s very sad to see the destruction of forests in any location around the world. There are many alternatives to palm oil. Olive oil is not a suitable alternative but there are many others and it’s a global problem since most of the palm oil is exported. I don’t understand how the words “I am sad to see” are in your eyes “judging” - I have pinned this comment Becuase I want others to comment too.

The road to Toraja on the Mamasa route has now started to be repaired and has reached 40% asphalting. There is still a lot of mountain dredging around the valley in the Pasapa area so now The road will be really very muddy and slippery. But the hope of Mamasa people who want to go to Toraja is that the road repairs are expected to be 100% complete in the next 2 years because The geographical location of the work is very steep and narrow, so it will take a lot of time and energy

In rural areas, good road means not muddy or not having a lot of potholes or no big stones. This means the bike can pass through much easily during dry sunny season than wet rainy season. You can stop whereever there is a flat ground on the road side. Motorcycles are cheap and easy transportation for rural people. It seems a 4x4 vehicles can easily go there. A car might can go during the dry season.

The government has a lot work to do to improve the transportation access meanwhile it's such a huge different here in South Sulawesi, even small villages are mostly accessible by decent roads. My parents prefer to visit Toraja which is my father's hometown untill now I'm in my 30s. Your video encourage me to make Mamasa 1 of my bucket list which soon I wish I could achieve.
