Toranaga (2024) is good, but Toranaga (1980) was great. Toshiro Mifune was an extraordinary actor. Finding/watching the 1980 mini-series is well worth the effort IMO. And Richard Chamberlain (Hawthorne) is a nice bonus.

Yea that was the point. Toranaga was very vulnerable here. He barely had any guards with him, and was surrounded by Yabushige's forces. Yabushige could have very easily captured Toranaga and turned him over to the council if he wanted. To avoid this, Toranaga gained the loyalty of Tabushige's army with his speech and gave himself enough time to escape being trapped, which is why he was in such a hurry to leave.

@@Kref3 You're right about family name coming first in Japanese, but the show actually uses the correct order - Yoshii Toranaga and Kashigi Yabushige. We know this because when confessing to ordering the attack on Jozen, Nagakado refers to himself as "Yoshii Toranaga no musuko, Yoshii Nagakado" - Yoshii Toranaga's son, Yoshii Nagakado. The soldiers here are actually using their given names with the honorific -sama. I am no expert on Japanese culture, but I'm willing to wager that with the army of consultants this show had at its disposal, they did their research and using given names for your liege lord in this time period was appropriate.

It’s done in the book also, probably to avoid confusion. If they went with the traditional naming convention, many of their relatives would also be referred to as Yoshii-sama or Kashigi-sama. Could otherwise be difficult to reliably distinguish characters of the same clan. AFAIK at the time, most daimyo would not be referred to by their first or last name but their court title if we were going for strict historical accuracy.
