Actually, it's not. Optical illusions are when your brain fails to construe a correct image from the stimulus your eyes send to it. However, when you stare at something long enough and look away and see something similar to what you've been staring at (in different colors), it's because the sensors in your eyes get "tired" and continue to send the stimulus to your brain after you looked away. Your science teacher sucks, mine rocks... ;)
