Hang out with me while i do a full review of the books used with tthe Torchlight curriculum K level.
From the Torchlight Website:
"Torchlight is quite an eclectic curriculum. We include hands-on learning, game-schooling, car-schooling, media, and bedtime story recommendations into our curriculum to spread out the learning and make it more of a lifestyle.
Torchlight takes a distinctively secular approach with Humanist underpinnings. Torchlight supports the Golden Rule, kindness, exploration, questioning, and scientific thinking. A worldly approach full of logic, equality, and empathy. Torchlight provides flexibility, allowing you to mold the learning experience to the learner. A list of alternate and extra materials is given which facilitate expansion of a topic without the added pressure to “get it all in”.
We hope to foster exploration of rabbit-holes, or making a last-minute switch for a better fit without the fuss, allowing the crafting of a better balance, different to each learner and their learning partner. Torchlight is created to fulfill the idea of the adult learning alongside the child, helping guide them, teach them to find answers, and ask quality questions."
Torchlight can be purchased here:

The Curious Chef can be purchased here directly from the publisher: gelettburgess.cartloom.com/pr...

I know you did this a while ago, but THANK YOU! I had never heard of Torchlight before and it sounds lovely! I love that it has a modern book list. It seems like many use all classics and it's frustrating! This is great!

LOVE the Character Education module. Some of the books do seem to be a bit high level for a K curriculum, but if your children are learning primarily through literature, than that is probably appropriate. You’ve inspired me to spend this rainy Saturday afternoon at our local library. I hope we can find the Katie series!

I would also love to see inside the curriculum and maybe an updated video about how it all worked out? I think you are the only person with Torchlight videos. Thanks!

Thank you so much for making this video! I was homeschooled as a kid, but my mother used a Christian curriculum. I will be starting to homeschool my daughter this fall, and I’ve been searching frantically for a secular curriculum that will fit her vivacious and energetic personality. This sounds like the perfect fit!

I loved the Wishing Chair! Our copy is all tattered now the amount of time it’s been read. Will check out Zoe and Sassafras. Btw, in your Level 1 overview video you mentioned that you did a shortened version of K. Can you do another video about how you did that?

I really like your videos. Would you be able to share with me how you shortened the K curriculum for your kids? How old were your kids when you used the K curriculum? My daughter completed K at private school but was not a good fit. She is reading 3rd grade level books independently but loved to be read aloud. I think she would enjoy 1st grade books/ancient history but I would hate for her to miss traveling around the world. Since I am new to HS, I was hoping for some guidance in this respect. Thank you a lot

Hi, I really enjoyed this review. I think my kids would really love this curriculum. I will add it to the top of my list! Do you have any suggestions for math to go along these same lines?
@OurWildWay
@OurWildWay 6 жыл бұрын
mckenna j I’m so glad you enjoyed the review! As far as math goes, If you like a literature approach Beast Academy might be a good fit. It is comic book style text with an accompanying workbook. I believe it starts at around 2nd grade or so. It teaches excellent problem solving skills. We also really enjoy the Bedtime Math series. Soon I’ll be doing a video for all the math literature we use, so keep an eye out for that.

Thank you for the review! What grammar/writing program do they recomemd to use? Also, approximately how much time a day do you spend on it?
@OurWildWay
@OurWildWay 6 жыл бұрын
Alissa E she recommends the program Logic of English for language arts. It’s a good program that teaches the rules of English. We don’t do it every day even though that’s how it’s scheduled. We spend about an hour, 3 days a week. We also read some of the books at bed time and audio books in the car, so it’s nice and spread out.

I'm really wanting to get level 1! The boook list is so long I calculated it and it would be well over $500 if I bought them all online so I'm going this week to see if my local library has most of them because that will be a selling point for me haha what are you going to do for your grammar for the year though? I don't really see that in this curriculum and that's the only hole I need to fill
@OurWildWay
@OurWildWay 6 жыл бұрын
morgan woodham i bought the spines and a few others that I thought we would enjoy for a long time. The rest I’m getting from the library. Some I’ll be swapping out if I can’t find them. So the language arts that is recommended in the curriculum is Logic Of English. It’s way to in depth for me. I think we will just be doing daily workbooks and story writing.

How early did you start educating your children? This looks like an interesting curriculum. I am thinking of home schooling my son, but I am overwhelmed by the options. Can you recommend a book to get me started?
@OurWildWay
@OurWildWay 6 жыл бұрын
Good Life Xplorers I’ve been homeschooling from the start. We didn’t start formal education until about 6 years old. Before that it was all reading together, lots of pretend play, sensory activities, and nature exploration. Mostly I just read blogs on the topic when we were getting started.

This curriculum looks like such a great guide! My kids are 6 and 8 and I am torn between level K and 1... Would you recommend starting with level K? I’m wondering if I would be able to finish it up by the end of the summer and start with 1 in the fall (we are starting to homeschool at a really awkward time of the year...)
@OurWildWay
@OurWildWay 5 жыл бұрын
lentilupdates we actually did that last year. We started this curriculum in March and condensed it down so we finished by the end of the summer. Then started level 1 in the fall. If you just pulled your kids from school I would suggest not going full force into sit down school work just yet. Using k as a guide would be a great transition. Read the books, play games, watch documentaries and cartoons about the different countries and ease into your new homeschool routine.

I may have missed it in the video - making dinner while listening! What age would you start this? I get confused with the whole preschool, pre-k, k transition thing. I would like to delay formal education - would the K be appropriate for 5 or 6? I’m also waiting for readiness, but just asking for an age for a general idea. Thank you!

K level would absolutely work for ages 5-6. I used it with older kids. At the moment it is undergoing a bit of a revamp. I would opt to go with pre-k level, then do K level after the new one is released. Pre k is lovely, and topics can be expanded if needed. I do have a review of pre k. I’m in the process of editing it, but should be out within the week.

You do have some time. My youngest is almost 3 and I can’t wait to start pre k with her. I will lol, but begrudgingly. I think we will start in the fall. It’s a very gentle intro to “school”. In the mean time I’m using Blossom and Root vol 1 for ages 2-4. I’ll be posting a run through of that as well very soon.

Our Wild Way I will probably start pre-k activities next year - her birthday is in late fall, and she’d be closer to 4 at that point. I’m hesitant to start school activities too soon, but she loves reading and learning, so I appreciate any method / curriculum that’s structured but not textbook/workbook heavy! I’m subscribed and excited for your future content! Love your channel so far!

Ami Wilson definitely buy the spines. Those you will use almost weekly. We ended up buying the Mercy Watson, and Zoey and Sassafras books too because they are so good. I also suggest a good children’s atlas. We have enjoyed Maps from Big Picture Press, and the Usborne illustrated atlas.

How much you spend in buy all that books?
@OurWildWay
@OurWildWay 6 жыл бұрын
Yarelis Reyes most of the books were from the library. I bought the spines because we would use them so much and some others I thought the kids would read more than once. I’m also utilizing the epic app which has about 15 books in ebook form. I did spend a couple hundred dollars between the curriculum and the books I bought. Buying all the books would be astronomical in price.
