I live in the Cedar Crest area which is right behind him and we heard Chryslers sirens for about 20 min before the tornado ripped through our back yard. The Fire House sirens sounded about 3 min before it hit us and it is about a mile away. But the sirens had been going off for quite a period of time to where we thought it was not going to hit, then BAM!!!!!!

0:52 I think I can answer your question. A few years back, the City of Kokomo decided to eliminate the use of outdoor warning sirens because of the costs associated with purchasing new ones. Instead, they' opted for a weather radio program which offers a discount for the purchase of weather radios. I have my own reservations about their decision, especially since I'm not certain the weather radios the City is offering meet CEA Standards. But Tornado Sirens are outrageously expensive ($27,000 at least) and aren't getting cheaper anytime soon, so I can *understand* why they opted out of having sirens, although I might disagree with it.

Maintenance is my guess... Hey, they still got the message nonetheless. Pretty amazing no fatalities after an EF3. I myself thought the tornado would have been one of the worst I had witnessed live. I myself live in Zionsville, one of the first to get a warning that day in the metro area. While we were in the middle of the almost one and a half hour warning I get a message from a friend that a tornado had struck Kokomo. One of the craziest days I have seen, 6 tornado warnings all at the same time left my mind racing for sure.

are you serious? that is ridiculous, money over people lives seriously... I do see their side with you but still what about people who aren't near a TV or radio and have no warning at all to tornado.

and plus we barely get tornadoes as it is I mean the sirens where I live go off about 10-20 times a year because of a storm, but the last tornado we have was, actually back in April, but it was such an unpredicted event and it was a very brief spin up the sirens didn't go off then the ONLY time in my life in living in Northern Indiana (I'm 17 btw) that the sirens proved useful was about 6 years back, we got hit by an EF0 tornado and the sirens were going off for that,

I don't see why sirens are needed anyway, because when the sirens go off, mostly everyone runs outside or start driving around anyway to see the action.

I was in 4th grade when this happened. We were at school and all the teachers and staff said it was just a drill. My grandma was a custodian there but she wasn't working then but I asked one of the other ladies she worked with if it was just a drill and she told me it wasn't she said it was real. My dad was right in that. He worked at bed bath and beyond and still does. He said their shelter was in the bathrooms. He also said afterwards they were scooping and draining water out for days.

The first priority is to seek shelter, but if you see a tornado you should call 911 and report it, especially if your jurisdiction has sirens and they're not sounding.

kokomo removed outdoor sirens because it interfered with the price to buy a new and louder siren, so they removed the siren so they could get enough money for a new one. they have sirens now though, i heard them about a month ago while going shopping at game stop

Oh, don't be fooled. I live in Indiana, and believe me, there's more than corn in Indiana. Colts, Pacers, Indianapolis 500, South Bend Cubs, Fort Wayne Tin Caps, University of Notre Dame, IU, Purdue, 2nd largest county fair in the nation, covered bridges, old grist mills, caves, the only artificial rapids in the nation for kayak practice, the only town in the nation called "Santa Claus", ... shall I go on?

They were all fine. They were moved to the bathrooms by the manager on duty and that part of the building survived. They were rescued by the person shooting the video of it hitting them.
