I was in the 05/2003 Franklin, KS EF-4 tornado. We lived east of Franklin so it weakened a lot. It probably wasn't on the ground through us. It flipped mobile homes, toppled trees, and took off chiminies. I did get to see a small tornado on the ground. It disappeared behind fog. I believe it was the main tornado. We were on the northern side of the tornado. It was 5/8ths of a mile wide with 3 small tornadoes. They had merged together before hitting Franklin.

Just curious. What did it sound like? I always hear they sound like a freight train. To me, it sounded nothing like a train. It sounded like a 747 taking off. It was a loud roar. I guess it depends on how close you are to the jet and the train. To me, a train sounds more mechanical. Yeah, you get a whoosh of the turbo, but you can still hear that diesel sound. A jet engine just has a more whoosh sound. Smoother roar. Not mechanical. My ears popped when the wind changed direction. The winds came from the northeast and then the southeast when it passed. This means anticyclonic. I don't remember if that tornado was anticyclonic and we could have been hit by the small tornado I saw. I believed that was the actual tornado. I felt so calm. I think if I ever realized just how big it was, I would have been more scared. I wonder if the low air pressure in a tornado isn't just the vacuum of the tornado itself. Air is being pulled up quicker than it can be replaced. It wasn't scary at all. We heard glass breaking twice upstairs. It didn't shatter. Just broke from being hit. Same window twice. I never saw any debris other than grass clippings against the basement window. I still wouldn't want to go through it again because I know it could have been worse.

Love them both, and have to agree. Budgets were obviously not equal.

I was born in 1963 and grew up in a little area in Virginia that was destroyed by a twister in 1929. We are kind of 'history buffs' in my area; and when overhear new people ask about 'Weaversville, VA' and I am able to say...'I grew up there'.

There have been three noticeable shakes here in central Indiana in the past four decades. It's not the same as living on top of the San Andreas which I did for fourteen years.

Great comments. The New Madrid Seismic Zone has a potential to cause incredibly severe damage due to the solid basement rock overlain by sediment from the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. It would be much like the 1906 San Francisco quake, M8.9, that had a devastating impact on the buildings built on land fill in the Bay. It’s called liquefaction, which is when the landfill basically almost instantly compacts the soil and acts more like water which creates high intensity waves of destruction. Much of St. Louis is built on river sediment. If earthquakes of a similar magnitude of the 1811-1812 ones,~M6.1, were to happen, it would be far worse than a California quake of the same magnitude. The 1811-12 quakes rang church bells in Boston and caused a large building to collapse in Ohio. The geology behind it actually dates back to when a huge rift formed millions of years ago, which could have caused the North American Continent to split apart. A parting thought, my son went to school in Indiana, and I grew to love the state. May move there in a couple of years. I’m done with California! I grew up in Chicago. Love the Midwest.

From Oklahoma too. Came pretty close when the one went thru OKC/Moore in 1999. I was living in Norman at the time. Did have to drive thru the mess everyday going to work though. Some folks I knew lost everything and some a near miss. They are scary. I haven't actually seen one either, just the mess they leave behind.

I experienced my very first tornado ever on March 3rd of 2020 in Nashville Tennessee and let me tell you it was truly scary but amazing at the same time!! And it's something that I will never forget.

Lot's of Texas history there. Burnet County has the Long Horn Caverns -- you should try going there. A lot of history in those caverns. Including boot leg hideout during prohibition era; as well as it was used as an underground dance hall. And of course San Antonia is nothing but history. Bandera country is a popular dear hunting area. Fredericksburg was a city built by German Immigrants and has a beautiful down town -- a lot of German food and beer. Of course, I have no idea how well anything held up during Covid. It would be ashamed if we've lost it all. Any ways -- yes I am proud of my Texas -- can you tell? Well if you go to the Texas Drivers Licenses site, you can get your weather modification license. Kind of strange that I've been there and seen it and yet they still claim that chemtrails/weather modification/throwing chemicals in the air doesn't exist. I agree with you because the tornado I was in on March 3rd of 2020 in Nashville Tennessee did not sound like a freight train to me at all... It sounded more like the engine of a 747 airplane. And the sound of the tornado itself was so loud that it almost drowned out the tornado warning sirens that were blaring. And also amazes me how much destruction can happen in 30 to 40 seconds worth of time!!

@@hollyh314 we lived in Florida and the first Hurricane we went through had tornadoes in it. While we were taking cover I asked my husband why was the planes from the Air Force Base leaving. But that was not the Air Force Base it was the tornadoes that was coming through with the hurricane. Sometimes these people that says it sounds like a freight train kind of gets underneath my skin. LOL

@@geniagrow2662 yes, Hurricanes can spawn tornadoes when they made landfall such as Ivan (2004) for example. He spawned about more than 100 tornadoes which puts Beulah (1967) on the second position of hurricane with most tornadoes that was spawned

I went through 2 tornadoes as a kid in Michigan. One in 1967, the other in 1969. Ran for the basement both times with friends (we were playing outside--summer vacation). Both parents at work. Took the roof off the house both times. When the Fujita scale was adopted in 1971, these tornadoes were classed as F2s. Lots of houses in our neighborhood lost roofs, windows, and trees and small outbuildings were destroyed. I live in northern AZ now. (Jan Griffiths).

When you live in an insignificant poe-dunk town like mine, no one pays attention to you, so it's almost like living under the radar. Kids in my neighborhood play outside; ride bikes, play basket ball on the driveway, little girls drawing on the driveway with chalk. Even teenagers here walk, ride bikes or drive around on golf carts blaring music. They play outside until the heat of summer kicks in -- that usually being about June. You see we live in the swamp - wetlands is the official name; but it is the swamp, along the Gulf Coast of Texas. Everyone pretty much watches for strangers. If we don't recognize you, you will probably find yourself stopped by the local police. Quick story: We had a kerosene shop heater we no longer wanted so we put it to the side of the road; figuring someone would stop and take it. We did not think to put a sign on it though. Next day, I am upstairs sewing and looking out the window I see a truck stop and a young man get out. I smile -- good. But he just had it loaded when the police pulled up. I shouted to the husband; "Quick, get out there! The police think the heater is being stolen!" The husband assured the cop it was O.k. for the young man to take it, everyone got a laugh out of it. Turns out a neighbor saw the man and called the police. And, yes we had a unit patrolling (the Chief lives in our residential area so, patrol pass through often) and they got there that fast. So, yes it is bad in a lot of places but a lot of times it depends on where you live and what kind of people live there. For us, we are some of those 'evil' Christian types(being sarcastic) with a church on every corner. I will take Christian neighbors to 'woke' leftist neighbors any day. A main key factor is to stay clear of the big cities. Closest big city to us would be Houston which is more than two hours drive -- on a good day. You just got to find you a little pocket and hope it stays nice until you die. Good Luck.

@jim brewer No, it is not perfect here -- perfection does not exists any where. And yes there is Texas hospitality but it is being watered down. You see, you have to be born and raised here to be a Texan. Moving here to live does not make you a Texan. Too many are moving here and they do not have Texas hospitality. They are destroying the reputation of Texas because they are bringing their rude personality with them and other people are thinking that they are Texans -- but they are not. My neighborhood is not perfect -- far from it -- because transplants are moving in and they are not practicing Texas hospitality. But the rate of infiltration is slow -- so far. Some adapt and realize you get more flies with honey than vinegar; but many don't get it. They come here only for work, as their own state killed their job field. They come with an attitude, because they always looked down on Texans and made fun of us. They are here because they have to be here. Some leave as soon as they can, and we say don't let the door hit you where the good Lord split you. As far as the police go, well everyone in my neighbor hood are working class -- mostly blue collar (construction). We work for what we have -- no one gives us anything; and so we will be damned that someone will come in and take it from us. So, we keep our police busy. The benefit of a small community is -- you don't keep the people happy, you don't keep your job. Police chief, fire chief, Sherriff -- you are looking at the 'good ole boy' system there. But, that being said, an area like ours solely depends on taxes. Piss off the tax base and the money moves away. We know this, so we use this. You have to make a community into what you want, and it takes everyone wanting it. So, we are not rich but we are not poor either. We work. And we fight to keep what is ours. Good luck to you, I do not know how old you are; but perhaps you are young enough that you will find an opportunity to improve your situation. Good luck to you and yours.

Why would people choose to live in a known tornado area, in very flimsy wooden homes? I've never seen a wooden house here in the UK, apart from holiday homes which we call static caravans, as our homes are bricks and mortar but, when I visited friends in Missouri a few years ago, I was surprised to see all the (?) weatherboard homes, and theirs was one of them. Surely they're aware that such structures couldn't withstand a tornado hit? Obviously, I don't know the laws about domestic architecture over there, so I'm genuinely interested. I do know that these properties are extremely cheap to buy, or rent compared to those in the UK, so maybe they take that chance. Hope you don't mind my question. :)

Actually, a monolithic dome home has withstood hurricanes and tornados plus earthquakes and floods, so that is the reason I want one. There is a family in Florida who owns one, and when their neighbors all around them lost their homes to hurricanes, that family even got the people to come inside their home and be safe. There is a family in California who has a monolithic dome home, and it withstood a wildfire, and in fact, they even took in the firefighters who would been caught in that fire, and the only thing that happened to their home was the soot which had to be washed off, so yes, I do believe that monolithic dome homes can withstand anything.

A blonde leading actress, a storm chaser with instincts, an older lady with a dog, a device to put in the path of a tornado, and a competitor for the blonde's charms. This movie was every bit as good as "Twister". There was another tornado movie released also in 1996---"Night of the Twisters", and that was good too. I liked all 3 movies very much. Some survivors speak of how the sky looked as if the storm was almost over and then the tornado formed out of the remains of the storm. Some storm chasers and meteorologist even warn people about the back end of storms saying they might contain a tornado so the people need to remain cautious.

Never experienced a tornado like these. Once, a small one went across our back forty. It never touched ground but was strong enough to tear a branch off a pine tree. Which went through the back door window and landed in the kitchen sink about two feet from mom who was washing dishes.

I pray you never experience one. I was an over the road truck driver and believe me it can move an 80,000lb vehicle. I've been out of trucking 22 years and to this day when the weather becomes severe, I start to have panic attacks. Stay safe where ever you live.

I think it focused good enough on those affected by tornadoes. I felt sad for them and cried as Ephraim was talking about his tornado experience and the man who was looking for his wife.

@@dpflack1744 ......Oregon only gets about three tornados a year and they have wind speeds too low to do much more than break off tree branches and smash them into various things like houses. I live in central Oregon and these wimpy tornados usually happen in Northern Oregon. Oddly enough, active volcanos -- And tsunamis along the coast are a bigger threat. Mt. Hood is considered a major threat. By far the biggest threat is the Cascadia fault that runs from Northern California up into Vancouver Canada. The Japanese have records of a Tsunami crossing the Pacific Ocean and hitting Japan the last time it ruptured. FEMA warns that everything west of Interstate 5 is going to get trashed if it cuts loose all at once. Then there's the Yellowstone Super Volcano, if that blows, all of North America including Canada (and to some degree the entire world) is going to be affected. There's no such thing as a safe place. But our lives are so short compared to geological time the odds are in our favor.

I also was in that quake. I was in the area for a horse show which was to be that weekend. I had just unloaded my horse into his paddock when the quake hit. I had been in smaller quakes before, but my 16 year old horse had not. We lived in AZ. He was scared to death. I held onto the paddock fence till the quake ended. The show was cancelled, of course, and everyone got their entry fees back. I loaded up, and it took 2 days to get back to AZ. Aftershocks all the way, pretty much. I saw the damage that occurred on the news and in the paper when I got back home. It was horrible, especially the freeway that collapsed on top of the other one. And all the damage in the Marina district, and the bridge. I just wanted to leave as soon as possible. (Jan Griffiths).

The tornado that I was in on March 3rd of 2020 in Nashville Tennessee came at 12:42 a.m. and I agree with you the sound of them is something that cannot be duplicated. Everyone says it sounds like a freight train but to me it sounded like a 747 airplane jet engine and it was so loud that it drowned out the tornado warning sirens to where you could barely hear them. And it was over so quickly in less than 40 seconds. And when we finally emerged from our home after it was all over it was so eerie and nothing looked the same destruction every which way you looked and of course it being at night made it even more spooky!

This movie came out the same month Twister did. Most of the plot of Twister was well known before it even was in theaters due to spoiler news articles. It is likely the makers of this film knew some things Twister would be about. One thing this movie did was show how little tornadoes are seen by storm chasers. Twister made it look like storm chasers see a lot of tornadoes on most chase trips. This movie was more accurate about that.

That's true---the tornado's strength is measured after the fact. An EF0 tornado can be a mile wide---an EF5 can be 100 yards wide. All depends on where the thing hits, and what it hits. Size really dosen't matter. (Jan Griffiths).

There was no assigning of an F-scale in this movie. They only guessed. But even people with a meteorology degree that knows what chasers look for concerning damage can still guess at what F(now EF-scale) damage a tornado might do.
