Tornado/Twister Leigh Lancashire 8th July 2011

Hi my name is Lee and this is the first video i've ever up loaded on youtube(had nothing worth putting up before) and it was filmed on 8th July 2011 at 3.15pm. I was just looking out the window minutes before this happened and having seen so many other videos of tornadoes/twisters on youtube I recognise the cloud movement as what could be the start of a tornado. That's when I grab my camera and started filming luckily just seconds before the twister started to form.
This film footage was featured on BBC Northwest Tonight and was describe as a funnel cloud not a twister as it didn't touch down.But conflicting reports(Bolton news website) suggest it did touch down in Westhoughton which is about 3-4 miles away from where this was filmed and cause a little damage to some roof tops and tossed some garden furniture around.
I would like to apologize for the sound track it is pretty bad as the original audio was just me saying "bloody hell a tornado" lol and there is no wind or thunder sounds too so i just used youtubes free audio changer.
Please feel free to use clips and still pictures on other websites. I know this isn't as good as some of the other videos particularly the ones you see in U.S.A but for England this is pretty cool stuff and I hope you enjoy it.

I remember when this happened. It was 3:30pm and I was coming out of my primary school in Westhoughton, and I saw loads of leafs flying around in the air. At first, I thought it was a big flock of birds, because I was like 6 or 7 at the time, but then my mum said "It's a tornado!" It did touch down on the ground and it went right over my house, and my school. Quite a few people were screaming, and one of my neighbours (who was in Y6 at the time) asked my mum if he could get a lift home because he was too scared to walk because of the tornado. My trampoline was turned over, the outdoor table in my back garden was in the graveyard behind my house, and some of the tiles on my house were missing. Pretty scary day!

Thanks for uploading this,Lee,i was sat on Warrington Bank Quay station on 26th April,2012,watching a sky similar to this,then torrential rain came down!Makes me thing of God in all his glory!

I remember this. I was in Charnock Richard and could see the start and end of it from where I was. Something I will never forget......Beautiful.

Excellent piece of work thank you! This island is the Tornado capital of the world - luckily for us they mostly do little damage.

I live in westhoughton, And this twister hit my house. It ripped a few tiles off the roof but the damaged was quickly dealt with. I remember Looking around that day, We saw a few bent road signs and a porch that had collapsed. When it happened all the residents of the street were all out, supporting us. After, We was on the bbc news and for about a week there was people driving up and down the street all the time. An eventful day.

@naturalgayboy20 By looking at this video I would say it did touch ground. For the most part , when funnel clouds dip lower than 2/3 the distance btween the cloud base & the ground , they are usually already tornadoes. This is because the lower part of the tornado may be invisible to the eye and the upper part is condensation. In this case one would have to look for a debris cloud ont he ground. But that can't be seen here.

@cardiffstormchaser I think this is very impressive. Its not every day that you get to see a twister from inside your house I could do with out he music though. I like to hear the un edited sounds .

i live on the street where this tornado hit in westhoughton, i was in the house at the time, CANT BELIEVE I DIDNT SEE IT :(

Shit ! I never heard about this Ive lived in New Zealand for the past 6 - 7 years it's weird to see something like that happen in Leigh hopefully when I return to the good old town that is leigh on tuesday There wont be another tornado ! haha
