I'm from the east coast ....do you guys know ahead of time when a tornado hits or do they just pop up out of the blue sometimes if conditions are right? Just curious

@Happycat8385 normally requires a storm to come thru to cause a high pressure and low pressure systems to collide causing tornadoes. But the tricky part is it can show up immediately before, during or immediately after the storm. And as seen by this storm it can spread a couple tornadoes over the length of several states in a couple hours. So you have to hope your local weather channel is good at predictions and that they have good tornadoes sirens and tornado spotters because if lucky you might have a couple minutes warning with the sirens or they might not go off until after they hit which happens sometimes with the sudden or large area storms especially at night. Kind of like tsunami warnings, it means it is already underway and you might only have seconds or minutes to drop everything and get someplace safe. In that i70 storm I was driving home and decided to take i435 instead of i70 like normal, and was listening to a tape instead of the radio so i wasn't even aware of the tornadoes till I got home even though I was at max 10-15 miles away but if I'd taken i70 I would have had to drive thru like 6 tornadoes. Very tricky like the 90s movie twisters. Can leave miles of destruction but totally skip entire blocks or towns along the way.

@@Happycat8385 we get first stage “tornado watch “ , second stage “tornado warning “ time to get down in the basement with my NOA radio. Honestly, if my home were ever destroyed, I’d just put a new roof on my basement. In addition, most people don’t know that they do NOT have to rebuild on the same site.

Not only do the people directly affected by the destruction suffer, often people not directly impacted, suffer survivors guilt. 😰

And costs at least double to build which most in the Midwest can't afford its not like the east coast or west coast where somehow people can afford 1,800$ a month rent for a shoebox apartment

The only proven fully tornado resistant building is a reinforced concrete dome shape. Can't build everything dome shaped.

You will still be rebuilding that structure if an EF4-5 gets anywhere near it. They can heavily damage or destroy reinforced concrete buildings with their violent wind speed along with heavy missile debris. Back in May 2011, in Blanchard Oklahoma, there was a reinforced concrete dome house that got absolutely shredded by an EF4. Living here on the south side of Oklahoma City for six decades, I often tell people don't underestimate the destructive power of a tornado, especially an EF4-5
