This is a detailed comparison review of a Toro Greensmaster 1600 reel mower vs a Tru Cut C25 reel mower. Both are excellent reel mowers that will do a great job helping you create your golf course lawn. The review covers the differences in controls, mowing low height adjustments and quality of cut comparison. The Tru Cut is propelled by drive wheels while the Toro Greensmaster 1600 is propelled by a drum roller. While the mowers discussed in this review are the Greensmaster 1600 and Tru Cut C 25, the information still applies to the Greensmaster 1000 and Tru Cut C27.
Choosing the right mower for your grass type is one of the most important decisions you have to make in your lawn care program. For creeping grass types like Bermuda and Zoysia, a reel mower is a great investment since it allows you to cut the grass at the appropriate height while doing the least amount of damage to the turf. Because of the way both mowers work, you're able to mow low without damaging the turf in the process.
Both the Greensmaster and the Tru Cut have their pros and cons. Most of these stem from different design philosophies. The Tru Cut is designed for residential lawns while the Greensmaster is targeted at golf courses. This results in compromises in the quality of cut you're able to get with the Tru Cut. It also means that there are locations on most home lawns where using a Toro Greensmaster will be challenging.
I've done my best to make the review as objective as possible to help you decide for yourself which mower is right for you. Enjoy!

Another great video. Currently using a Swardman Edwin 2.1 and is my first reel mower. Chose the swardman due to easy service (no greasing), additional attachments for brush and verticutter, and how easy it is to get the reel serviced. Cut is amazing, controls are great as you can run the reel in the right hand and feather the speed in the left hand.

Thanks keyeskennard. I can totally see why you like the Swardman. Having multiple machines all in one goes a long way towards getting more out of your investment. Having the speed and reel engagement be independent is a nice feature. It's something I really like about the Tru Cut.

Great video Ron! Very informative. As someone who just recently switched from a Tru Cut to a John Deere 220B (very similar to your Greensmaster -both greens mowers) I would say another factor to consider is maintenance on the reel. Setting the reel to bedknife on the tru cut is not an easy task but something that needs to be done often. I remember many times getting frustrated trying to get the reel to bedknife set. You think you have it just right, it’s cutting paper, you tighten the 6 bolts, check it again and it’s no longer cutting paper. Or it’s only cutting paper on one side. I just never felt confident that it was set correctly. On the John Deere (and on the Greensmaster) it is super easy and once you set it, you know it’s cutting properly.
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 3 жыл бұрын
Great point B Schrum. Setting the HOC on the TruCut is easier/faster than the Toro but there's no comparson when it comes to setting the reel to bed knife clearance. To your point, with the Tru Cut you almost have to set it a tad too loose or too tight and slowly walk the bolts in hoping that it ends up in a good spot. The Greensmaster is much easier to get and keep cutting consistently great. Thanks for bringing that up. 👍😎

Great review, its definitely an event with the Greensmaster, but once you get used to it there is no looking back. I have a smaller cylinder mower (Atco 14inch) for the edges and the "throwing around" part of the garden. The Greensmaster does everything from around 12inches inside the edges.

Good review! Tons of good points. I have a “postage stamp lawn” and use a 20” Cal Trimmer with a reel roller. It makes awesome stripes and it does its job. I imagine anyone who uses a reel mower would love to have a Greensmaster, regardless of the extra things you have to do such as setting HOC and having to edge a bit extra, just to get those stripes! However, I also imagine that it would be way overkill for most homeowners and would be more trouble than it’s worth. Like you said, if you’ve got the extra time, and extra coin, Greensmaster all the way.
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed Andrew. You have to almost enjoy everything associated with mowing using this mower. A bit of an event like I said. It does a great job cutting. Definitely another level of cut. Totally overkill for most lawns like you say.

Excellent professional demonstration & honest. One of our best lawn guys in the UK IMO is a guy called Daniel Hibbert (he has a KZfaq channel). He uses a Hayter rotary with roller 1st usually, then an Allet & uses a verticutter for scarifying/ overfeeding plus treatments. His lawm stripes are just amazing & close ups of the grass look like astro turf. The Allet I'm sure you know, but the Hayter has a very good name as a striping rotary & obviously deals with any long stalks & vacumns debri.

Ron, my first mower was a Craftsman Honda 3 in 1 rotary mower 21”. It is mulcher-bagger and size discharge that I still have. I have taken great care of it and it’s lasted 25 years with us in our first home. A few years ago I bought a Scott’s Classic 16” since the condominium administration started frowning upon (and charging steep fines too) owners doing or making any noise during the weekend. As I live in Costa Rica and gardening is not as industrialized as in the USA most owners use strong trimmers to (kill) the lawns. I had to import it and paid almost its price in freight and taxes from the USA. I recently imported a Honda FG110 tiller to do edges and aerating our mostly carpet grass turf and some Saint Augustine that we had first when we built our home!

I gotcha Tony. I believe it will go up to 1.25” but again even that height requires a fairly level lawn to prevent scalping and an even cut. Top dressing is a great tool for leveling your lawn if you’re up for a day or 2 of rough work. 👍😎

I mow with a Tru-Cut C-27, the cut is amazing, but the machine is heavy. I started with a Toro 22" rotary, but wanted a better cut, I briefly owned a JD greens mower, but it was too high maintenance. I'm looking at getting a Swardman Edwin 2.1 for next season. Great comparison video!!!

A swordsman is very light and can have the tendency to ride on top of a thick lawn. It is shaped like a tru cut and attachments available are it’s strengths. Also the newer GM1000 can definitely mow your swale area and they have pivoting heads. One advantage disadvantage point you didn’t mention was Height Of cut. Tru cuts can cut higher. But a Greensmaster can cut lower. You will never be able to cut 3 inch grass with a greensmaster. And you will never be able to cut below 1/2 inch with a Tru cut. Great content!!!!
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Telly. Can't believe I left that out. I know I cover it in each of the individual review videos but I forgot to mention it here. Great catch. The issue with the Greensmaster on my lawn is more an issue of width. It's physically too wide to hit between Alex's fence and my lawn. It'll snag on the slight hill on my lawn's side. Both are amazing machines that'll produce good results. Of the 2, the Tru Cut is more well rounded like you said. I have yet to try out a Swordsman. Will have to see about getting my hands on one.

Hi David. I've not used a Mclane so can't comment. It's similar to a Tru Cut so I imagine the quality of cut will be similar. Neither will produce as good a cut as a JD or Toro but they're also less involved to deal with. There's always a tradeoff :-)

Good info, as usual. My experience with reel mowers is more on the professional side working in the golf course maintenance Industry. On a personal level, I have a John Deere 220B. It has a big down side compared to the Toro in that you can remove and replace if needed the transport axels but on the JD, you would have to cut them off. It is a hassle around the fence line but I am considering making a “rough” area and making two or three passes with the rotary at 1.25” and the rest at 0.5”... make it look like a fairway. Have you looked into the landscape scissors ? That’s a good option , if you can swing the cost, to get the trimmed in areas looking like it was reel cut.
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve. Thanks for sharing your experience with the JD. I've not closely looked into landscape scissors. My concern would be around using them along a fence. Wouldn't they chew up the fence pretty badly as I made a pass? Thanks for chiming in.

I like both mowers, but the Greensmaster isn't appropriate for my lawn. I can manicure much better on my lawn with the Tru Cut. Hey Pkale! I totally agree man. For most lawns the Tru Cut is a better fit. It's designed for residential lawns and it really shows when you have to use it around obstacles. It's the reason why I still need to keep the Tru Cut for cutting certain areas of the lawn. Believe it or not, outside of heigh adjustment, the Greensmaster is actually easier to work on that the tru cut. Getting the reel to bed knife clearance right on a Tru Cut can be an absolute nightmare when you start trying to lock everything in place. There's always a compromise. 😎👍

@RonHenry 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Falain. I can't really list any cons to the JD other than I don't believe the axles on that mower are removable. That's one difference between the Toro and the JD. So depending on what kind of obstacles you have in your yard that might be a dealbreaker for you. I think both mowers are very durable given proper care.

What do like for chain lube on the TC? I’m trying to stay away from ultra sticky motorcycle stuff. Also any reason to replace my solid roller with a grooved roller? Top dressing soon since the clowns that installed sod didn’t care enough about it.
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim CCC. I use motorcycle chain lube because it stays on the chain and won't sling off onto the lawn. That's a big reason why I choose that type of lube. If you're cutting lower the .75" a grooved roller is going to produce a tighter cut on the lawn. It doesn't float on top of the turf so the cut is more consistent. This is definitely the time of year to top dress. If you're taking it on yourself, I've got a video here that shows my process: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d8pyZat2urWpeps.html. Thanks for watching sir.

I was thinking of purchasing. A Tru-Cut. Other than a mower would a home owner with a small area to cut need to do anything special to the lawn, While using a Tru-Cut? Or use a mower if the grass is too long and finish with a try-Cut. I am an avid golfer and can appreciate a well maintained fairway lawn. This being new to me is there a less expensive option to try it.

Tru-Cut is a great mower. Initially you don't need anything other than the mower. If you decide to mow at lower cutting heights, you'll eventually want to top dress and level your lawn. This helps improves drainage and creates that golf course lawn appearance you'r after. kzfaq.info/sun/PLNAOeUcPq872_vybiiL847oxtAOqAVmj1

I wish the greens master had locking wheels ON the kickstand. then you could put the wheels down to move around, or lock them in place, or just kickstand them up and mow, without the axles sticking out
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 2 жыл бұрын
That's an idea Fifth. I suppose the only negative is it would make the mower wider than it already is making it more difficult to mow next to obstacles. It would definitely be really convenient though. The axles on the GM can be removed. I just don't want to take the extra time to take them on and off each time I mow.

For residential close to 1000 sqft on a trucut mower what roller do you recommend? I have a smooth one on my 20 in mclane and truecut is also 20 in. Thanks
@RonHenry

Either one will work Leo. If you're mowing lower, a grooved roller will produce a better cut. Hope this helps.

Great review. I've had a hard time sourcing a 1600 so I'm about to pull the trigger on a used John Deere 260SL. I think it's a similar size as your 1600. Have you had any trouble maneuvering such a large machine? Also, do you use the transport wheels and grass catcher? The 260SL I'm looking at doesn't come with those.

Ortho Doc I’ve got the 220B and can’t think of anytime I’d actually need the transport wheels. I’m thinking of cutting the axles off as a matter of fact.
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ortho Doc. No real issues with maneuvering it. It's different to mow with than Tru Cut in that that the traction drive is an on/off switch vs. slipping the clutch like on a Tru Cut. You'll get the hang of the JD in no time. I think they're fairly similar in that regard. I use the transport wheels but rarely the grass catcher. I mow so frequently that the clipping that hit my lawn break down super fast. I use the the grass catcher a couple times per month.

another difference Ron your greens is a 8 blade i think you told me when you were looking at it b4 you got it ..as is the true cut. they come with 11 blades and cut like butter.. you can add a strip roller on the back of the TC if strips are your goal for rear compression the bolt on strip roller strip kick off the honda rotary . plus if your not hands on the TC has several grease points which you need a grease gun which i like that way i know its greased over being sealed like the toro. no grease zerk..you can get greensmaster and john deeres for 1000 to 2000.. i still have my honda Rotary mower for bagging and clean up because reel mowers have no suction.. as well as 21 TC and John Deere 11 blade 220b
@RonHenry

You're right Fred. The number of blades on the reel no doubt make a pretty big difference as far as the quality of cut. I didn't highlight that in the vide but you make a great point.

@@RonHenry you dont have to grease your greens do you? and i think i misspoke. our TC only have 7 blades.. well they do come in 5.7. and 10 .... also i was going to ask you have you every heard of Slow mow? its a granular 20 dollar growth reg made by bio advanced at big box stores.. i know you went through all the liquid growth vids lol.. was just thinking of something Reasonable for you average home owner who didn't wanna pay T nex prices lol

@RonHenry 3 жыл бұрын
@@timh363 yes I do. It has grease fittings all over the mower which require grease as part of regular maintenance. I have heard of that product but have never used it. Is it really that much cheaper than T-Nex if you look at it from a cost of application? It's true that T-NEX costs around $150 for a bottle but that gallon goes a reallllly long way. Several years for most people.

You're right about apples and oranges! FYI, Truecut is not considered commercial, Toro is. The extra work involved with the Toro is because it is a precision machine capable of cutting 1/8" greens without scalping. How accurate is the Truecut? A lever for height adjustment.....for the homeowner. This is just not a fair comparison, I get you tried to qualify it at the beginning but this is a video that should never have been made. It's like comparing a Chevy to a Lambo. Both will get you there but there are massive differences in the engineering behind both.
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 3 жыл бұрын
Heya Dirk. The "C" in TruCut C27 stands for commercial. There are several local lawn care services that use them on their jobs. So it's definitely a commercial unit. It has a very different design philosophy to the Greensmaster though. When a landscaper is moving from lawn to lawn, they don't have time to go through then adjustment process associated with a greens mower; hence the level for height adjustment. Appreciate you watching the content.
