Thanks for this. One word you used I liked was the word respect. If both those in cars as well as on a bike respected each other and know that the other person has a right to be using the road, a lot of conflict will be avoided. At 2:35 you mention that people will go around a parked car in the bike lane. All too often I see people throw a fit instead of just safely moving around and continue their journey. The other thing that stood out was you mention that if you miss a miss a street car you wait 8-9 minutes. Here in sunny Southern California you wait an hour.

I would LOVE to bring near-side traffic lights to Toronto, and North America in general. I once trained somebody at work that was from Amsterdam and he was going to work in Belgium. When making a left turn from University he would become confused and stop when facing the red light for cross traffic. We get used to tuning out visible traffic lights which aren't "ours", but this puts additional burden on drivers. Aside from the more generous spacing allowed for cyclists, near-side traffic lights remove the ambiguity that NA-style traffic lights create, drivers are only able to see their own traffic light. It also makes it easier to have individual lights per lane of traffic. It requires marginally more lighting structures per intersection but it's an objectively better experience for all road users.

I didn't mention this in the video - but I also loved that the traffic lights were painted dark green! They completely fall away and disappear when you are not driving or looking for/at the lights. So much less visual clutter in the streetscape. Not only are the near sided lights good for calming drivers also less visual clutter for everyone else which is so underrated. Noise pollution and visual clutter are a huge burden on the streets of North America general -Owen

Thanks for this review. Yeah, Canadian cities could learn A LOT from many European and Scandinavian cities on a number of things, not the least of which is cycling infrastructure.

Great thumbnail! The more people experience good urban design, the more they will ask for it. It is not rocket science.
