Our team is way too soft, it doesnt matter if you have the best players in the world on your team, hockey in playoffs is a completely different thing and our team has not been tough enough in the last couple of years and probably wont be this year either. Best we can do is hope for a really easy opponent to get past the first round.

I agree. I also don't blame Marner for how the negotiations played out either. I tend to believe his pops and agent were the primary drivers of that bus. You can tell how much Mitch loves this team and being a Maple Leaf. It wouldn't surprise me if the way the process went made him uncomfortable. The contracts would have looked better for the team each passing year as the cap went up. Hopefully it does go up a bit given the new US TV deals to get some wiggle room. I know everyone has been saying the cap will stay flat for a few years, but I'm crossing my fingers that the new deals bump it up a bit. During the Quinn era the Leafs did have some pretty good teams. They did tend to rely on the Hall of Fame goalies they had in Curtis Joseph and Ed Belfour though. I do remember thinking they could get by Buffalo in the '99 ECF, especially given the Sabres were missing Hasek to start the series. However I didnt think they would be able to beat Dallas in the SCF. I thought they would beat Carolina in the 2002 ECF as well, but I also didn't think they had a snowball's chance in hell to beat that Detroit Red Wings team. Let's hope for a memorable run here. I have to say this version of our Maple Leafs feels different from years past. It's like I can see the growth from the playoff disappointments of the last 4 years in the core guys who have experienced it. The two things that worry me are the goaltending situation and the lack of exposure to any team outside the division. It's really hard to judge and measure how the Leafs will stack up against the Lightning or Bruins for example. GO LEAFS GO

How awesome is it that Marner is setting records and crushing it but is overshadowed by Matthews? Marner 3rd fastest Leaf to 300 points for like a week then Matthews is. Those two on our team is a DREAM come true. Since Keefe took over they are the highest scoring duo in the NHL. I just wish Tavares/Nylander would take off too. There's no reason they can't. Nylander has a wicked shot and carries the puck amazingly well. I just can't figure out why they haven't lit it up yet too.
@MrMnlkn3 жыл бұрын
One reason is that Matthews and Marner are just straight up better. On another level. And they are a near-perfect duo with their skill matchup.
@NasonJPR3 жыл бұрын
@@MrMnlkn I don't expect them to be as good but they should be much better than they've been. Tavares is on pace for 55ish points and Nylander for 50ish. But they should both be point a game players. I'd like to see them with Hyman consistently. Their line has been a dog's dinner all season.

Mitch Marner is a player that has sparked my renewed interest in hockey. My interest in the game diminished on a yearly basis because watching it was mind-numbingly boring. With few exceptions, it seemed like every ounce of creativity was sapped from the style of play; and as someone who grew up playing and watching, it felt a bit sad. I don't know why, but now you see players stick out. By that I mean they capture your imagination while in possession of the puck. Mitch Marner is one of them. This is going to sound hyperbolic, but here me out: Given the amount of changes in the game over the years -- size, strength, strategy, etc. -- it is hard to imagine a return to the days of, say, Lafleur streaking down the right wing and issuing a "cannonating" (RIP, DG) blast that beats the goalie on blocker side. But Marner is a perfect example of the type of player who can handle the puck while seemingly floating around the ice before making a precision pass. In short, his play reminds me of the Oiler's dynasty in general and one player in particular. Guess who that is. It seems to me that the clampdown on certain types of body-checking has opened up the ice. Players now feel free to roam around the offensive zone without fear of being levelled. That's just my take.

I don't think matthews and marner duo is permanent. Nylander and Marner will be the duo in the future and Matthews will be given other wingers to carry. Matthews is averaging a goal per game with a bust wrist, he doesn't need Marner. What we do need is another skill line running plays.....Marner and Nylander duo needs to become a thing.
