King David ‘Torq’s Moto’
The Torq Moto Podcast Show driven by Talon welcomes three-time 500cc World and multiple British champion David Thorpe as this week’s guest. With so much to talk about with hosts ‘Jeffro’ Perrett and Doc Wob on his amazing career and his opinions on the here and now of motocross this will be the first instalment of two for the Dave Thorpe interview.
No doubt about it, Thorpe is the ‘King’ of UK motocross royalty as Great Britain’s most successful rider on the world stage and here in the first episode he talks about the journey to the very top and that first world 500cc crown back in 1985. The trio discuss the early years of his career and how it all started as a young kid living in Surrey and the influence of his parents, particularly his father Keith who was his mechanic for virtually all of his racing career. ‘DT’ talks about the finer details of his youth and amateur career that feature in his recently released book 'No Regrets…. well almost’ and the decision to focus on motocross instead of football that set him on the way as a motocross icon and those epic and glory days of 500cc World championship motocross in the eighties.
All the good stuff on his career up to the end of 1985 is here, from his time racing for Honda with dispensation to race the AMCA at 15, through to his first stint with Kawasaki and working with Alec Wright before going back to Honda and signing with HRC and the pressures and expectation that came with that. Dave talks openly about potentially losing his HRC factory ride in the latter part of 1984 before turning it around in style by winning the last six races of the season, starting with a 1-1 victory at the British GP at Hawkstone Park that ultimately secured his ride with Honda and gave him the platform to go on to win his three world titles and repay their faith in him.
Episode one of the ‘Dave Thorpe’ Interview on the Torq Moto Podcast Show driven by Talon is available on Apple and Spotify and will be aired on the Torq Moto KZfaq channel this Thursday at ????. Episode two picks up Dave’s career from the beginning of 1986 with the target of that #1 on his back to his thoughts on current day motocross and his role with Honda and will drop next month.

So many memories I grew up in Horsham Schoolboys (HSSC) with Dave. He was class above. My claim to fame he did pit board for me in 1981 Schoolboy British at Nantwich. He was a part of the HSSC family along with Paul Hunt, Perry Leask, Kelvin Tatum et al.....He still gives us a hug when we see him, legend.

Touching on what you said at around 33 minutes Jeff, This is where the internet as much as it helps has also hurt our sport, The attendance numbers were sky high because you wanted to see what was going on as soon as you could, before your mates could in the paper the following Friday, Motocross is an addiction to a lot and you weren’t waiting while friday to get your fix

After watching this episode, I had to share it with my friend...then thought the message would be a great comment too. So here it is : "After watching the last episode with Rob Herring, I thought the guys had cracked the nut on their best episode...until this came out last night! If you haven't seen it yet, make a cuppa tea, sit back and watch on your big screen telly. It's a quality way to spend an hour." Well done to TM team; waiting in anticipation for part 2.

Fucking great guest again you pair, the ☝ and only king david !!! I was there too, fantastic experience and I'm happy to be able to say I was there, there's only 60,000 of us who witnessed it live, lol. Anyway wob, constructive criticism aimed at you, your head fell off at 1 point and out come a load of stupid noise, I almost took an over dose, so negative mate, imo ? Plus, who am I to criticise I'm a knob-head at times too, it felt almost an awkward moment watching. GREAT CONTENT, GREAT GUESTS, GREAT PODCASTS, GREAT EVERYTHING BOYS. 🇬🇧💥🔥😎

An absolute legend and a gentleman. Just goes to show you don't need to be brash and loud to be fast on a motocross bike. The same could be said of many motocross legends of that era. I admire the riders of today as they are insanely fast and skillful , but the riders of this era were more interesting and relatable.

@@TorqMoto it’s sad I’ll never get to be track side at places like Nemur, which is my all time favourite track, if by some bizarre luck it ever comes back, I’ll be first one there. Even saddens me how tame Hawkstone is now compared to the 80s. Wish they’d bring some of the old features back.

@@TorqMoto yep, that’s why I’m getting off abroad Trentino, Saint Jean D’Angley & Lommel to MXGP rounds that aren’t built in a car park. Feels in the next 10 years most of the tracks will be like they are in Indonesia, just man made & boring.
