Жыл бұрын

This July, the day before I went on holiday to see my family it was POURING with rain the entire day. I nearly didn't go down to the Thames but I'm so glad I did. The rain had washed the foreshore clean and several interesting finds were waiting for me on the surface. I need your help to find out more about these finds so please take a look. The day after this mudlarking outing I went to Guernsey to visit my family and we took a little trip out to Sark which is a neighbouring channel island. Come along with me for a little visit.
Thank you for watching. If you want to try mudlarking on the River Thames then you need a permit from the Port of London Authority. You cannot mudlark without one. Keep an eye on their website for updates as they are currently not issuing any more permits.

Thank you for watching.
See you soon.
Love Nicola

I enjoy your editing, which may sound odd, but let me explain. You include the wildlife and scenery, the actual mudlarking with the cleaned up view. You dig into the history. And, you top it all off with music. #Sark

In the 1881 census, there is a James Chapman, aged 43, a MasterTailor, living at 232 Pentonville Road, with his wife Amelia 42 and their 7 children. The eldest son, Alfred aged 16 is a Tailor’s Assistant. James was born in Liverpool and his wife in Whitechapel, London. In 1900 he was still at Pentonville Road but by 1901, he was 62 and now a Merchant Tailor and an employer living at 8 Gordon Street, just a mile away in St. Pancras. He had at least 3 properties and when he sadly died in 1902 he left over £24,000 to his widow Amelia. That’s more than £2.5 million today! Always love your videos! #Sark

The story of the little girl in prison having stolen a handkerchief made my eyes teary. It reminded me of the film 'The gods must be crazy' where a bushman gets locked up in jail. He would have died there if it was not for mister Steyn rescuing him. I loved the reaction of the local women who gave the girl light and voices to listen to, to get her through probably the most difficult three days of her life. #Sark

Oh my ….I have longed for glimpses of Sark all my life …. My grandmother, Margaret Hortense Sutherland Derry gave me a book entitled The Dame of Sark by Sybil Hathaway. She told me the author was a distant cousin, and I should endeavor to get to Sark if I am ever able. Whenever I make travel plans of any kind Sark is always an unofficial part of my itinerary. So if I ever win the lottery …

What a great surprise! In my youth, back in the 60's, I used to travel from NYC to Sark while my contemporaries were off to Paris or Rome. I found the island enchanting. I think I am too old to ever get back to there again so it was wonderful to see glimpses of the familiar sights and those fields above the cliffs. I used to make my way down to a great pebble beach there and still have some agates I found. Perhaps you will enjoy the beach next time you visit. Thank you! Just expected a mudlark (always fun) and ended up going down memory lane in a beautiful place. #Sark

Yes! And the beach you might enjoy is found by following a cliff path down just past the Dixcart Hotel where Victor Hugo used to stay for his vacations when he was exiled to Guernsey. The home he lived in in St. Peter Port has some furnishings made of found objects on the shore. I don't know if he mudlarked, but he certainly beachcombed. Again thanks.

The little island of Sark reminded me of when I was a child living in the out islands of the Bahamas. It was very simple, no cars except for one truck they used to carry concrete from the town dock to the boatyard. There were barely 150 to 200 people on the island, no electricity, and minimal indoor plumbing. It was a tight community and everyone knew everyone else. There was a two room schoolhouse, no telephones except for one at the telegraph /post office/telephone office. Once a week the Stead Bonnet, the old steamer would bring things that were ordered, groceries for the two little shops, supplies and the mail. Yes nail was received once a week. The only way to get there was by boat. So, your story about Sark brought back happy memories. So you can sign me up for the torpedo bottle with the #Sark. Thank you!!

I'm today year's old learning about Sark. I am familiar with only two Channel Islands. Jersey and Guernsey. I find it quaint that the Channel Islands have their own legislative body. Sark reminds me of Michigan's Mackinac Island in its restrictive policy regarding automobiles. Horse and buggy and bicycles only. Thank you for sharing Nicola. I have only been to England once and I got to take the ferry from Portsmouth to St. Malo and it was lovely and the weather was lovely despite the Solent and the Channel being really choppy. I don't know if I will ever get to go back to England but seeing England through your and Si's lets me live vicariously. I am thrilled you found some Staffordshire pottery. My ancestors came from the Staffordshire area. Walsall area.

Loved visiting the island especially the tiny jail. I loved the story of the ladies being there for the girl who stole the hankie. People were and still are good at heat. ❤️ #Sark

I love the idea of a place where there are no cars! I'd love to vacation #sark! And a tour via pony cart! Just perfect.
