Today we're reacting to Keir Starmer's decision to allow Tory right-winger Natalie Elphicke a seat on the opposition benches.
Then we get into the meat and spuds of today's PMQs, where Rishi Sunak quite possibly delivered the worst attempt at a joke by a Prime Minister, ever.

To answer Oli's fingerprint question - a healthy layer of dermis needs to be removed, but you cannot permanently remove fingerprints. Not least, the trick only works for pre- and post-accident. If you burn them, thereafter, your fingerprint profile just looks odd. In fact, it probably makes you statistically more identifiable as the idea that your fingerprint is unique is a myth - your fingerprint is unique *enough* to be a decent forensic tool, but suffers in the face of other DNA forensic tools. Look up the case of Brandon Mayfield for more on this. Also, to further expand - we don't just have fingerprints - we have the same pads on our feet, as do most primates. They're useful, because the increased surface area caused by folds of skin equal more friction - so great for gripping things, like branches - as well as the fact that our palms are *excellent* heat sensors. Fingerprints also form as a combo of genetics and environmental factors in the womb, we think. Anyway, that's all I've got on fingerprints.
@sempressfi

Thank you, commented to answer on the function of our fingers having that pattern of skin growth but wasn't sure on the less biological/medical and more forensic aspect of how long lol def agree it makes you more identifiable but only if they're looking i suppose

Oli asks if there are “any bits of housekeeping” no fewer than three times in four minutes and, as the podcast slowly dribbles to a close, he finally gets around to asking, “Want to finish the record?” 1:07:19 and Ava says, with a quiet sort of resignation, “We could have finished it a while ago but there we are.” Quite true.

@@nathanielratcliff7456 The concern is they'll be a fickle majority. This prompted me to look up Oli's old Tab article on the Welsh language. Its a piece that brings the same seriousness, attentiveness, depth of knowledge and astute insights that Oli has brought to Joe's coverage of Welsh politics: that is to say none at all. The irony of a London based person pointing to the 'self gratifying [admiration] of Celtic history' is almost too much to bare. I submit that the current state of the Welsh language, and the discourse around it, has rather more to do with over a hundred years' of English history: with policies set in Westminster designed to bring about the language's demise. I don't doubt that, like Oli, those policy makers believed that the interests of Welsh people would be best served by adopting the English language and culture. After all, what cultural value could 'the senior language of the men of Britain' have compared with language of Shakespeare, or Milton? Its a minor example of an anglo-centric world view that has in no way aged badly. Whether investing resources into the Welsh language is good value, is a point upon which reasonable minds may differ (as it is with any culture funding). Regardless, it seems disingenuous to discuss our response to the fact that Welsh is endangered, without any mention of how that came to be so. It is a shame that Mr Dugmore did not make use of either his time at Cardiff university, or the occasion of writing on this topic to do any reading or thinking on the subject. Of course, when you can vomit out some unnecessarily acerbic nonsense and call it journalism, I suppose knowing things is redundant.

I don't speak on behalf of all progressives obviously, but the current iteration of Labour are mimicking the Conservatives to such a degree that I'm almost indifferent whether Labour or the Conservatives win. I think the Labour party will have considered it carefully with the optics and concluded that the shock benefit of having a quite right leaning MP defecting and slating the Conservatives outweighs the fuss over her history and voting record. No doubt finally swayed because she is standing down at the next election so won't be in the party for very long. It's not 100% ideal but Labour will take the number and stunning most of the political world is the bigger story.
