The Tosa Inu is a legendary breed that has seen better times. I am somewhat saddened by the current state of the breed and hope that one day soon breeding programs will be established to restore this breed to it's rightful place.

My boss' dog was named Torta, Portuguese for pie. Torta was the sweetest boy and very protective of the people and animals he liked. Torta and I bonded very quickly. I grew up around dogs big and small, so I have kin for dogs. One day, a big guy of my clients was mad because of his bill. He felt that since I was new and wouldn't keep track of what he took from the store and bought on credit. He was so angry that instead of talking with my boss, he tried to swing a hook punch at me. Luckily, Torta was there with me to defend me by getting in the middle, taking the blow, then almost climbing over the counter to chase and bite the client. The client was able to escape by getting into his truck scared. My boss had just arrived at the scene from lunch and witnessed the chaos. Later that week, the client paid his bill and apologized for his action. After the incident, my boss always let Torta keep me company behind the counter. I loved that dog!

Wow! The last time I've seen a Tosa Inu was in the early 80s. One of my uncle's best friends had one. I really don't know much about the breed however, the one he had was very mean but very disiplin'd. His name was King. Thank you for the memory.

Guys. Read his statement completely...he said "ridgeback...on...steroids"......I can totally envision that. When guys abuse steroids, their heads become enormous and grotesque. Also, the slender frame of the Tosa, resembles the ridgeback as well, albeit a bit more muscular...

I'm glad you said something about the straight stifle (post legged) issue. It's becoming more prevalent in a lot of large breeds. I believe it's a result of breeders selecting for physical deficiencies because they appear to fit a trending look or standard interpretation. Like the the sickle hocks and sloping back & croup in German Shepherds. Straight stifles may be because some breeders get so focused on "angulation" they disregard function of the legs and hind quarters, IDK.

All of your points are spot on and it's my feelings on a couple of the recent fad designer breeds cropping up namely "American Bully" and "Xl Pitbull" especially with the whole Hulk insanity. I also hope the Tosa and these other breeds are remembered for what they were before irresponsible breeders started their mad scientist acts.

You are exactly right about the breed condition at this moment. I looked into this breed before I got my first Boerboel. And I was unable to find a sound Tosa. They are bred for size and looks, not for work. Bad hips especially are common. Too much skin on the head. So I got a Boerboel. Friends and family already had Boerboels, I knew what to look for, and they are awesome. Currently own a bitch that is almost 11 and still healthy and playful. You gotta know what you're doing when getting a Boerboel but if you do, the rewards are great.

If they are a champion fighter in Japan then automatically that is a good breeding program because their function was accomplished. Judging a dog based on how it looks vs performs isn’t an accurate judging. In fact show dogs that are bred for correct angulation, or other looks are the dogs that ruin breeds. If a dog can do it’s job however that dog looks is perfect. Form should always follow function. I love the content by the way!!

I get some of what you’re saying but a dog who ‘functions’ at the top of whatever it was bred to do but has bad form that passes from generation to generation you do not have a good breeding program. To neglect form in favor of function is to not take into consideration the dog as a total package. You could have a prize fighter who is crippled by age 4 or 5 due to trash hips. A dog whose job is to pull heavy things may be top of his class, out pulling everyone - but watch that crap angulation result in a ‘popped hock.’ Game over. Form is as important as function and breeders should strive to improve and perfect both aspects. Take a wholistic approach. Obviously IMO 🤷🏾‍♀️

@titanbuck7 4 жыл бұрын
@@OneDanae what breeds went into the breed and what common faults did they have? The straight hind legs are common in all bulldogs and even labs. They were probably cart pulling dogs at some poi t and straightened angles made them stronger. It sounds like if ppl focus on this one trait, they could loose the working genes some. The breed did get where it is by focusing on fighting ability. Straight stifles may also be needed to stand up and support all that weight. Our world seems to favor extreme. Idk.

I rescued a Tosa and GSP mix when she was 8mon old. She literally stayed outside of house her entire life without any training. Now she is 2yo and very sweet and super easy to training. Tell her once respectfully what to do and you don’t have to repeat. I see she is more like Tosa looking and personality. She play different levels strength with different energy dogs and never hurts any of them from tiny chihuahua to Great Dane also protects her from getting hurts. Great dog ever for me though.

I actually like the head and structure.I would mix this with the boerboel. The reason why is to create a more leaner taller version of the boerboel. I think this breed would compliment the boerboel in so many ways. Just my opinion. I love the boerboel. But not many lines have the leaner taller ones.

I've owned two in my lifetime. First one died at age 4 from a rare type of canine scoliosis and it also renal failure. The second one had weak hind legs and had to have surgery on the front leg joints at eight months ( she lived til she was 10 years old and was put down due to cancer so pretty good lifespan for a 150lb dog). Despite that, they had the best temperament and I would love to own another one.

Your spot on about the current Tosa Inu. This breed was breed for Fighting, EXCLUSIVELY. The Japanese love combat sports, and their dogs are no exception. There's no consistency in shape, size, color or temperament in this breed, The American Version is mostly 25% Tosa Inu, Bullmastiff and Rodesian Ridge back with some even having lines of Persa Canario or Pit bull. That I know for a fact.. Plus the Japanese version is smaller, Not larger. In japan version of the "American Pit bull Terrier" When they left Japan, people started to cross them with Live stock guardian dogs like Great Pyrenees, Kangal's, Anatolian, BOZ Shepherds. Evident by the fact that some will have the very distinctive feature of having the extra dew claw in the back that you find mostly in Live stock guardian dogs They never bred for hunting, or guard dog capabilities into this breed. They used long hair mastiffs instead. There's no consistency this breed currently, and really, even in Japan. More so, if you search up historical records of this breed. It was a very stubborn. Very dog aggressive and despite it's size and look, it wasn't bred for anything heroic or what the general public would like people to believe other than FIGHTING, the Japanese view this dog as a more sound dog to handle than the American Pit bull due to the unpredictable nature of the breed. They're not as hyper or high-strung, however most people outside of Japan would never use it in fighting. They all want pit bulls. These dogs typically don't last to long in the ring and fights are over and done with in a fraction of the time a pit bull terrier fight goes for. So when you hear American Breeders make claims about the dog being guard dog, farm dog. No way. The only reason this dog still exist is

I loved my Tosa Inu. He was a Japanese bloodline and was 200lbs. He was amazingly smart. He helped separate darks from lights, open and close doors, understood spoken English/Spanish and hand signals. He loved playing hide and seek. He played with the ferrets. I was always afraid he would squish them. He was super gentle unless you had ill intentions. Never had any health problems until he developed cancer at 9yrs

Love the channel. The Tosa is a breed I was slightly interested sometime ago. When I saw reports of Tosas being smaller in JPN & bigger in the US, that raised a flag to me. In the beginning of this video, the particular dog has an issue with it's front right leg. The back end, from hips down, seems a little wonky. I believe if they can lessen the aggression like they've done with bulldogs, although that will take TIME, I can picture a great family guard dog. A lot of work...a lot👍🏻. Ps- looking at Broholmer👍🏻

Zeke there are several breeders of Tosa inu here in the USA other than that Brad guy. In California you have Serena Burnett she had the best tosa inu kennels back in early 90s Michelle French in Georgia and Steve ostuni used to bring top yokozuna champion bloodlines to the states. Phillip Brown from Lad Vegas very knowledgeable breeder..I think you should interview him. Candy Naquin also has great Tosas I think in Georgia too. These folks are the Tosa experts and know way more than Brad.

I think a problem with a lot of these ''heritage breeds" - especially ones that were originally used for purposes no longer deemed necessary or correct today (fighting, hunting, etc)- is that the 'form follows function' style is hard to do when the function no longer exists. Because of that it is easy to have a breed start to worsen in terms of its conformation. See something like the Neopolitan Mastiff and St. Bernard - whose functions no longer are necessary and thus have lapsed into overall sad examples of their former breeding. And to some extent its not possible to save the exact form of many of these breeds - no one wants a fighting dog with the right temperament needed for a fighting dog (at least, not enough to save the breed), so it has to be bred out of them. We have to be honest when we say that we want to 'save' the breed that what we are really saying is that we are merely keeping the 'shape' of the dog, and to some extent the 'story' of the dog breed.

Very thoughtful and insightful comment. I'm not sure this should be a goal as I'm concerned that these subtle genetic traits will betray the true breed over time. Look at the study of the foxes bred to be more docile and the extreme physical transformation that happened...floppy ear foxes with polka dot coats. At the very least two sets: family pet and heritage Standard. I made up the second...heritage standard should be a term for a dog bred true to type, form and ancestral function fit for suitable homes and work. These dogs should not stop existing because they might keep the current genetic pool vibrant and they are like a piece of art that should be preserved. I don't have a mona lisa, doesn't mean it should stop existing because I'm not using it on my wall. It is someplace being preserved by those who appreciate it. The only problem with these canines are people biting off more than they can chew which proves too many people are over estimating their handling ability...as a enthusiast maybe I'll one day do a research or piece on why so many people are disconnected with their current ability

I have two mixed breed dogs, that came from an English mastiff mother and a shar pei father. The female could pass no problem for a tosa, which makes me think both these breeds could be present in the tosa and could be used to help make the breed more sound again. Although of course the shar peis have their own set of problems.

This is the scariest dogbreed in the world. I have seen one angry as it didnt want to follow its owner down the road we were walking...it got angry and it was intense.

I truly wished that you would have gone with your original thought because it can truly help your followers from making a mistake. It can also alert the current owners of the flaws/faults of their stock. Love the channel Bruh✊🏿

I had a tosa inu he talked with my kids and slept with my kids. He weighed a healthy 140 pounds. Only problem was he just didn't other dogs period. As for a family pet could ask for a better family dog and protector.

His dislike for other dogs was prominent. He played rough but his heart for my family was huge. He only ever growled at one person that was high on meth when he tried to approach us on our nightly walk. Problem solved he ran away when he saw the hair on zeus's back rise up and heard his bark. Problem solved never saw him again
