We've looked at this Toshiba Satellite 4010 CDT before. But digging deeper it has a really neat feature available. And that's Yamaha XG MIDI integrated directly on the board, ready for use in Windows applications. Which is awesome!

wow mate, thanks for hinting me to that!! I got two mainboards with the same (or maybe nearly the same) ymh chip onboard, the first one is an slot1 intel 440bx se2 and the 2nd an asus mel-m socket 370 celeron mainboard - I can confirm both chips allow the use of general midi (tested in duke3d and doom2) flawlessly and it really makes a lot difference in sound quality! thank you again, that is just awesome! now if have to test it on my audician 32 plus isa sound card as well, thats so nice :) keep up the great and very authentic retro work! cheers from a fellow hardware-nut from bavaria in southern germany

Very cool! Thanks for sharing! I've always liked the chonkyness of the Toshiba Satellite laptops.

They are premier tier chonky! But yeah I love it when things like this are available, making the toys even more usable!

These Toshibas are incredible, I have some in my collection. A free tip: Most of them have a generic graphics chip from the time (Chips and Technologies or something like that, usually 1 or 2mb of vram), but there were models with an S3 chip and more vram, these are the top of what you want. 100% MS-DOS compatibility, capable of running screamer in HiRes mode without problems and with an excellent frame rate. I had better luck finding these models in the Japanese version (called Dynabook instead of Satellite).

The drums in particular sound really good. Overall though it's almost like having a AWE32 built into a laptop. Really a DOS hidden gem of a machine!

It's pretty great! And that's a good way of putting it for sure, just that extra kick from enhanced audio. And it's basically included for "free". I'll be checking for that chipset on any retro laptop I get, that's for sure!

Thanks again! Didn't think a laptop like one of these would have this sort of capability. PSA: If you have an old Toshiba laptop, it's worth checking to see if it does XG/GM!

This was a great showcase of the GM capability of this system. MicroProse and Maxis sound tracks were great to listen to. I think sim city 2000 kind of molded a part of me that sometimes likes to play a laid back game and listen to relaxing chip tune jazz music. Great video, surprising capabilities for a retro laptop.

Yeah the XG seems to be well suited to that type of music. So Sim City 2000 and the like usually sound great. Perfect fit in this case!

Chiptune Jazz, you say? 🤓 You ever listen to "FEAROFDARK"? Their "Motorway" album is an absolute banger! (As is most of their stuff!)

I'm loving this machine more and more, haha. But judging by this, it's very possible more Toshiba laptops (and beyond) have the very same capabilities!

I have a 486 laptop and a Pentium 2 laptop that I've used for retro gaming and spent hours trying to fix the MIDI which turned out to be non-existent on both of them 😂. This laptop is great to have it integrated.

Hah, I hear that! I've been down many rabbit holes of random retro things, which ended up in dead ends. But in this case the machine is the complete package, so I'm glad to have it!

Great video, wish I had one of these. How about DOS support?
@RiksRandomRetro
@RiksRandomRetro Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! The machine itself does fantastic in native DOS, as well as DOS inside of Windows. You can check out my other video on the laptop for some more information there. Sadly the XG Midi pieces don't work in native DOS at all, at least in any way I was able to get working.

I have one of these..might be a 430? But I was trying to get my buddy to give me his old sega to play with the opl then when looking up specs for the laptop I saw it had an opl3 and was like yay and instantly ordered the ethernet dongle off ebay which took so long to arrive that I got refunded and then it showed up and I felt bad for seller, lol.. would be nice if it had a gameport for midi IO but midi over lan should do I hope..and dos gaming is great but I just want it for music composition

How is this different from S-YXG50? One of the systems I was going to bring to Netwar this year had YXG50 software midi, and it worked really well.

I wonder if XG Instruments are running from ROM Memory or if is is like the Software XG solution? Btw., because XG is not just better instruments sound but also got some synthesizer tweaking ability controlled by xg-midi files ☝️

Interestingly enough, I felt it was pretty hard to find any real information on this besides "hey I got this to work on my old laptop". But for any deeper dive, it may be worth looking at the standard desktop cards with the same functionality. I'll be exploring it more in the future for sure!

@@RiksRandomRetro right, because of changing the port for acessing the XG Instruments with a far more sophisticated sound, it appeals to me that it hardware based. I do own the DB50XG Daughter Boards but also the SoundForce XG; where I am also not sure if the sounds are stored in ROM. Could be similar to your Toshiba Laptop. Nevertheless you should look for the Yamaha Midi Player and configiration/ programming / Producer Software and the XG midi files. There had been a Yamaha XGPlayer Software Solution using system resources and loaded XG SoundFile into memory supported for Win 9x, 2000 and XP (a patch or serial number needed; quite tricky because there are so many versions around). There is a VST Solution for Win 7 as well. I prefer XG (including TB300) than Roland GS. I also do own the Rompler Synthi CS2X and CS1X. These are basically like the DB50XG. Great stuff! That time Toshiba had the most advanced Laptops.
