Toshiba Satellite C650D Upgrade Hard Drive to SSD, Install Windows 10 for Free, Benchmark & Review

Can upgrading an 10 year old Toshiba Toshiba Satellite C650D-007 laptop to an SSD and Windows 10 save it from the junk yard. In a word YES.
We partially disassemble a Toshiba Satellite C650D, replace the spinning hard disk with a Samsung 870 EVO SSD, download install and activate Windows 10 for free, then benchmark the whole system. We then provide a summary review explaining that the Toshiba Satellite C650D is a usable laptop in 2021 once it is upgraded with an SDD and runs Windows 10 Home.

I just upgraded my Toshiba L875 with 16GB of ddr3 ram and a 1TB Samsung 860 SSD. Better than new and its 12 years old.

So the SSD with windows 10 will work better than it was?? Because i had to downgrade to win 7 so i can use my laptop, with win 10 it was just frustrating!

@@MrKaram666 With Windows 10 it will perform better with an SSD, but it may not be as effective depending on the rest of the hardware in your laptop. Windows 7 is better anyway! 😉

I'm curious why you didn't enter the product key during setup? In my experience if you enter the Win 7 key during installation it works just fine, even chooses the right Win 10 Home or Pro version for you and activates once you first boot and connect to internet.

I’m having issues with the WiFi for c655. It can connect to hotspots and other WiFi routers. But it will not connect to Xfinity WiFi 6 gateway router.

Can you tell us what are the specifications of your laptop? Cause i have a satellite c670 (it has i3 380m cpu & 4GB DDR3 ram) is it possible to upgrade hdd to ssd and add a second hdd caddy or ssd to dvd rom? in this variant? and olso upgrading the ram 4GB DD3 to maybe 16GB DD3 is it possible? Sorry for my bad english...

Great vid, thank you very much. I just picked up an old C650 and cleaned it up but it is still somewhat slow. I was thinking of giving it to my (senior) wife for email/facebook etc. It has 4gb ram and I was wondering if you thought it better to do this upgrade or upgrade ram to 8gb. Thoughts?

both memory slots are occupied so there is no chance to upgrade the RAM... I had this for over 11 years and it paid every penny invested great machine..

I still use this laptop! I just ordered a cheap ssd for it, i wonder how much longer it can last.. It is i think quite exceptional for such a cheap laptop to last so long. I use it almost daily for interner/watching movies.

So the windows key is on the bottom of laptop? I need a new hard drive and didn't think I could reinstall windows on a new drive without buying it. What's the difference between a ssd and hdd?

SSD is SOLID STATE DRIVE which just means it has no moving parts because it is in fact just a circuit board with RAM chips on it. On nearly all computers (that shipped with Win7, 8 or 10) from the last decade you can install a fresh Win10 without buying it again. The CD KEY / PRODUCT KEY /... is either on a sticker in the back of the machine or is hard coded into the BIOS. The important thing is to get the correct VERSION of Win10. So if you are licensed for Win10 Home and you install Win 10 Pro, it will work but will not activate... so wipe it and do it again :)

Is the windows 10 totally free or trial for some months? Mine was originally in Vista then I changed it several times to Windows 7 at the technician,'s. What I know is they do not use offecial versions. Must I pay for the offecial version?

Technically you don’t have to activate windows 10 at all in order to use it, but you won’t be able to personalize your pc or get rid of the watermark until you do activate (I’m sure there is something else you can’t do but I forgot what it was) If you never activate windows 10 you could use it forever, but it’s not exactly the best idea

Dont Use Windows Free Anything Unless You Like Malware...I Bought Win 10 And New SSD...(Hard Drive Was Fried) ..App Compatibilty For These Old Satellite Laptops, Is Windows 8...So You Dont Get All The Features...If I Did This...Anyone Can...DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST

Yeah I'm in the process of doing this now. Got a case for the old 750 HDD and got a PNY SSD. I bought a disc copy of Windows 10 Pro on eBay, and when I was downloading all the Toshiba Satellite Drivers on a USB drive in case I needed them, I noticed the driver versions only went as high as Windows 8.1. Was not sure what that meant for the OS on this machine. When you say, can't use all the features, how badly is it impacted? Is it even worth installing Toshiba drivers from the website, or will they cease to function?
