I saw this guy in a band called Reflux at some dive bar in Texas a *long* time ago. Even had a brief chat with him after the show...but didn't really dig their style too much and never kept up with them. Then last year I hear about Animals as Leaders and I knew the instant I saw that guy that it had to be the same guy. Before the Reflux show, he was warming up (or showing off) on stage by himself playing these elaborate, multi-layered looping, sweep-picking riffs seemingly off the top of his head. I'm glad that he moved on from the metalcore scene into something of his own creation.

That reminds me of when I saw a band called "Oxes" many years ago. Small club, small stage, and they have wireless units on their guitars. I'm thinking, "What the hell they need that for?" Then they started playing. And running. Up to the mezzanine, into the lobby, into the friggin' bathroom, even! Didn't even miss a note. It was like Metallica on PCP. And this guy just plays it like an android. Pure economy of motion and emotion.

Tosin Abasi is incredible. You don't have to "understand" it to like it. The people saying it's not good because it's too complex so people can't understand it can go shit in their own mouths. 194 people have no appreciation for an extravagantly complex and well-executed piece of art. I'm sure you all understand every in and out of every one of Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, etc paintings too.
@Sejten11

Don't act like dick, they have right not to like it or understand it. I like Tosin Abasi, but even I think he goes overkill sometimes (not in this song though, this one's perfect for me). You don't know, who those 194 people were, so don't judge.

Pushkar Sarkar In this context, I find it difficult to say that it is "too complex". Also, who said "forced"? I just said that it was stupid, not saying to force them to like it. Many people do things for stupid reasons, disliking this music because it is "too complex' is one of them.

it's like metal shouldn't evolve and people want to have 100% heavy metal acts like Iron Maiden etc. Since modern (so called "art-") music became a very experimental field of various polyrythms and an overall highly complex structure (just like paintings of modern artists), why shouldn't metal and jazz, as it's both known for its experimental joy, take that step?

I suppose it makes sense. Solomon was the best king of Israels son, and had to follow in his footsteps, so he prayed and God asked him what did he want? He said, wisdom. The wisdom led to a lot of money, a lot of people seeking him out for legal advice and life advice. He wrote a book full of proverbs and other books about the meaning of life and our purpose. You can sense the technicality and brain power that went into this song, the sweeping ups and downs of emotion, the sadness, the excitement.

And do not think you have to play extremely technically to be a progressive metal player! Meshuggah for example. The actual playing is extremely simple. Their complexity comes from the insane meters and polyrythyms they have going on. But also, the piano/keyboard/synths and such are absolutely acceptable instruments in prog. In fact my band is searching for a keyboard player. You people are hard to find!

NO WAY!!! Tosin playing is technically awesome, creative and unique, however I think he lacks a very important aspect of guitar which all of the people you mentioned have discovered...knowing how to use the notes (pitch) between the notes. Tosin very seldom bends strings, and has a timid vibrato and feel. Nuance is what I think his playing is missing but he is definitely worth listening to.
@Loutube2006
@Loutube2006 7 жыл бұрын
LOL!!! Yes you're right but, when using jazz concepts in a progressive style or fusion that should not limit him to omit bending! I was also addressing the comment that he had surpassed all the greats which is naive and far from being true. I bet everything I own that Tosin would even wholeheartedly agree with me.

I believe my opinion has value, I have quite a bit of experience on the guitar and I have accomplished things that I believe even Tosin would appreciate. Your original post I think is simply over exaggerated, that's all, you shared it and I'm simply replying. Can you not handle someone else's opinion? If not, why share? Please if you want to argue be an adult about it or better yet instead of replying with more talk, show me a video of you proving your opinion is of value and I'll do the same (though mine are a click away). If you really think he is doing it wrong, post a video of you doing it right and earn the right to be annoyingly correct. Otherwise, stop ruining it for people who support him and go watch your "better" videos. Nothing in life is ever just handed to you. Progress and desires and dreams are made by getting off your butt, getting inspired and practicing your guitar, and don't forget to have fun! Everyone has their own voice in music, if you enjoy the sound of this then maybe try to mimic it and then put your own spin into it. Don't give up my friend, music is the best thing in the world

Musical Theory & Practice, Practice, Practice !!!! :)
@Colintrigger04
@Colintrigger04 10 жыл бұрын
Nope... Even him and Steve Vai said also that musical theory forces you to make bounded music and also boring. Everything comes from your soul. It's how you want your guitar to sound. NO LIMITS!
@Colintrigger04
@Colintrigger04 10 жыл бұрын
***** I know. But... if you put too much theory in your music, it might be a mistake. You need expression beyond any numbers.
@Colintrigger04
@Colintrigger04 10 жыл бұрын
***** Also as random fact.. i've finished 8 grades of musical theory so i'm not careless at all :) Just that i don't use it too much. I use like 5% of what i've learned. Everytime i play music in my mind has no theoretical approach. It just goes on...
@erwark
@erwark 10 жыл бұрын
***** The problem comes when people start to use theory as a set of rules, rather than a set of tools. It's the link between the theory and the expression it provides that people often overlook. ie. if you want something to sound darker, you can make the CHOICE to work within a darker scale or emphasise more dissonant intervals (b2 b5, etc). Want to create a feeling of uneasiness or restlessness? Use complex time sigs. You don't HAVE to do any of these things, as you know, but it gives people options. There are plenty of people who get by wonderfully without theory, but if it gets used and DOES limit a musician, then that's more of a reflection on them than the theory itself.

I know this is a guitar playthrough, but I feel like Matt Garstka doesn't get enough recognition for his role as drummer in this band. I know Tosin Abasi is an absolutely incredible guitarist, and people get off and just understanding what he is playing, but the same def goes for the drumming. There is some incredible musicianship going on there, but if I hear someone talk about AAL, the first thing that follows is either "they are so complex" or "Tosin Abasi is so good at guitar" I think its because no one remembers the name Garstka. Hell, I had to google it
@SEnigmaProductions
@SEnigmaProductions 9 жыл бұрын
He's definitely a great drummer. He just get's overshadowed by Tosin a lot. Hard not to be, considering how crazy the latter's musicianship is. But yeah, Tosin's not the only monster in the band, just the most well-recognized one.
@spencerj
@spencerj 9 жыл бұрын
I think that makes sense. Still bothers me. I saw Matt Garstka did a video with Drumeo reccently, and I'm not sure why, but Jared Falk seemed rather dismissive of what Matt had to say
@DestroyerOfWorlds6
@DestroyerOfWorlds6 9 жыл бұрын
Even though the drummer is really sick, there are still many others that could fill his position. If Tosin quits, that's it for AAL. Because no one in the world seems to write music like he does.
@incubrian
@incubrian 9 жыл бұрын
DestroyerOfWorlds6 haha you guys havent been fans for too long huh? matt is one of many talented drummers that have jammed w this band, the drummer you hear in this song, and on all the old shit, is the masterful Navene Koperweis!!! who now does his own thing as a solo artist but youre right, tosin is one of a kind, but i wouldnt worry about him quitting, because AAL is "him", if that makes sense. it is the band representation of what he wants to do musically!
